A few years ago, I used to game on a very weak laptop, and even its base resolution was 768p or something. Tiny screen, so it didn't matter too much anyway. Still, with some more recent titles, I remember frequently having to lower the internal resolution or playing them at 480p (beat Dark Souls 3 that way, lol). In one infamous case, I was playing Resident Evil 7 (which ran fairly well for an Intel integrated GPU, to be honest), and I was replaying the game on the Madhouse difficulty. I kept running into a bug that would crash the game early on, and I had no idea what was causing it because on my first run (on normal difficulty), it didn't happen. After some investigation, it turned out to be something related to vram, and the reason why it was only happening on Madhouse, was because on that difficulty, Jack can appear earlier than normal when you're exploring the main hall (in other difficulties, he only appears after you grab something in the bathrom), and he's also a lot more persistent when chasing you. My theory was that because of this, he is "spawned" earlier on Madhouse, and because the game needs to keep track of where he is, the part of the house where he's at also needs to be rendered. In other words, the game requires slightly more processing power on Madhouse in this specific instance. My solution? Lowered the game to 480p and then I went above and beyond and lowered the internal resolution to 0.5. I was essentially playing RE7 at 240p just for that brief sequence to avoid the crashes. And it worked lol, I got that game's platinum on Steam. Thankfully I have an actual, powerful gaming PC these days, but damn, I was struggling.

The fact this game still looks great after downgrading alittle shows capcom in my opinion did a great job with the character models. Or maybe thats just me man. Lower graphics it almost looks like a arcade game

My first playthrough of Dark souls 1 was only made possible by forcibly lowering the resolution so it wouldn't melt my laptop. I think the closest it came visually was about 180p and still thoroughly enjoyed the game.

I wasn't using FSR or DLSS! Just used the raw resolution output. I had all the other settings set to their respective max though, figured it wouldn't matter in the grand scheme of things considering I'd be working with like 2 pixels by the end of the video 😭

Believe it or not, your not seeing the true image when the res scale is under 100, it runs a interpolating upscaler, so 180 res has all the pixels being interpolated to whatever you have the game set to(720p? etc), if the interpolator is off, you get a more jaggie look, but it would look more crisp. Altho, most likely you can't turn off the interpolator.

What I actually did was in between cuts I went into the .ini config and added a custom windowed resolution - I believe 1440p was native, 360p was native, and 90p was native in terms of the custom windowed resolutions, meaning that 720p, 180p, and 45p were the "interpolated" resolutions. I also used a program called lossless scaling to upscale it to my screen using integer scaling (I think that's what it was called). Cool info to know though, thanks for sharing!

The lowest I've seen a game engine go was 7p, and that was on I'm pretty sure rust. it was someone testing a GT 710 at the lowest settings at 7p and couldn't reach 30fps.

You have the right to believe that! I personally think the remake did a lot of things better than the original but of course the original has its own charm that isn't fully retained in the remake. Regardless, the remake is a great game and I've spent countless hours in it 🤣

@@LouvreJaramill I actually like the Remake Leon when looking at the older RE2R model. Shows how he has matured compared to the older game. The gameplay is obviously a highlight of the remake, but I honestly also enjoyed the new evolution of the characters. Only one I'd say that got a downgrade was Ada but overall an improvement imo. All of this is subjective at the end of the day though!
