For the first volume at least. The description for the characters in the overall series actually goes like this: -Nick Fury: War Criminal. Asshole. And the REAL villain of the series. -Captain America: Self-Righteous Asshole. -Thor: Delusional Asshole. -Wasp: Airheaded Asshole. -Giant Man: Lifetime Original Movie Asshole. -Hulk: Cannibalistic-Rapey Asshole. -Iron Man: Surprisingly Not An Asshole but still rich and drunk. -Hawkeye: Psychopathic Asshole with a dead family (thanks Widow) -Black Widow: Traitorous Asshole -Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver: Incestuous Assholes -Black Panther: Justified Asshole (seriously he was drafted by CA into the team, he has every right to be an a-hole) So, yeah, everyone sans Tony Stark is some kind of asshole that barely have much redeeming value to them. Yeah, Bryan Hitch is in my top ten favorite comic artists along with Mark Bagley and Arthur Suydam.

I really like how Tony needs a tea m to work his armor It really helps add weight to him revealing his secret identity. Good luck keeping a secret when you need 12 people's help to super hero

The ultimates and the new 52 made growing up with comics in the 2000’s so confusing, every character had two origins that were both simultaneously canon that you had to keep track of.

The Ultimates may have been around my time in the 2000s, the 616 mainstream Marvel Comics were always, and has been, and always will be, my favorite of the two when it comes to superhero comics and the characters I grew up and love. Also, The New 52 didn’t happen until 2011 to 2016. Regardless, the 616 will always be my canon continuity for Marvel.

You know I have been thinking of this. Why would the army want a giant man? From a realistic and strategic point of view it would be impossible for enemy fire to miss him. If anything the ant-man idea would be better

because of the square cube law a giant man's durability would have to greatly be increased.

In a post-9/11 world, it made sense to reimagine The Avengers as a military spec ops team filled with mostly disturbed people who battle themselves as often as they battle the bad guys.

Makes sense considering the aesthetic, tone and characterization of The Amazing Spider-Man Movies were modeled after Ultimate Spider-Man. Making that one out of all the movies the REAL Ultimate Spider-Man movie making the rest look 616-ish in comparison.

Most of the X-Men characters got wiped out. I was talking about 616 Avengers, but yeah the Ultimates are usually pretty gritty. Fun fact, directly after Blob eats Wasp, Yellowjacket, her husband, grows and bites his head off.

The ultimates would be no better than the people they fight? There's making things real and then there's just being edgy for the sake of being edgy. I will admit Mark Millar did some good work on ultimate fantastic 4, because that's the only team he dosen't write to be creepy and disgusting. I'm not saying that they need to be exactly like their 616 counterparts, but they can't be just as unlikable as the villains because then you get something like the Boys (the comic, not the show).

I was actually more entertained with this narration than reading the book...wait a sec, I never read now that I think about it.

The Hank Pym I know (from EMH) was a pacifist, forced into a world who looks down on his way of viewing criminals as people who deserve help. This dicotomy led to him making mistakes which nearly destroyed the world, and the guilt left him a broken shell. All of this led to his psyche being broken and him turning into a completely different person. Unlike this THING, it was super heartbreaking seeing him suffer a mental breakdown and become everything he used to stand against. *Moral of the story:* Hank ain't a psycho and he can be extremely interesting. People who judge him based on that one panel (y'know the one) decide to make him a psycho, and expect us not to question why he's still even with the Avengers... But it doesn't matter now cause he's been dead for 7 years and his cropse is being puppetted around by Ultron... seriously, WTF Marvel?

Ok honestly why don’t more people watch this

This was one of the best moves any comic company ever made. The characters were far more grounded and opened the way for the MCU as well as the hyper realism we see in other comic movies and comic media today. The Ultimates Vol. 2 was called "The greatest movie never made" by USA today then it went on to be the basis for Avengers 1 and 2. Ultimates 3 was a mess and an pbvious clearing of the beard so that new writiers could write new characters. We were left with tons of other great stories like Ultimate X-Men, Spider-man, Fantastic Four and the Ultimate Guh Lak Tus trillogy.

While I'm not denying that some aspects of crossover can be forced, there are plenty of examples in the MCU that have creative merit. For instance, Black Widow in Captain America: Winter Soldier. This crossover, regardless of the reasoning behind it, does make for compelling storytelling because of the differences between the characters. Cap is very principled, while Widow lives in the grey, a conflict between them that supports the other thematic elements of the movie. Are you telling me that comic classics like the Injustice storyline or the Dark Knight Returns have no artistic merit purely because they are crossovers? Just because something like the MCU have separate movies doesn't automatically make it bad.... That would just be ignorant and naive...

I am kind of convincide the wide screen action and art of brian hytch is why the ultimates was so popular. That is defintley something that deserves praise.

The Ultimates is one of those comics, to me, that i love because the artwork is so damn good! It hightens what would have otherwise been a rather mediocre story, turning it into something much more.

The angle of thor being a crazy cult leader that may actually be crazy and hallucinating the whole god stuff is much better than what they went with in the movies.

These Ultimates are dicks, Hulk is a horny cannibal, Hank Pym is cocky,immature, and a terrible husband, Tony is a dick x10, Wanda and Pietro (Siblings) are having a relationship, and Cap the patriot for heroism is anti french, edgy, former shell of the character. The only one I can't find fault with is Thor and he gets his powers from machinery instead of being a God. Nah I'll take the 616 characters any day.

I’m guessing the 1% you are referring to are Tony Stark (heh, get it) and Peter Parker (as well as the very close family and friends to the two). The Ultimate Universe was truly a messed up place when all the heroes are assholes. Especially when it comes to the main Ultimates team who have some un-admirable traits including: - Being a jingoistic meathead (Captain America) - A Delusional Egotistical Liberal (Thor) - Brainless Social Climber (Wasp) - A fucking wife beater (Giant Man) - Murderous, cannibalistic, roid raged rapist (Hulk) - Psychopathic Murderer (Hawkeye) - A THOT (Black Widow) - Brother Fucker (Scarlett Witch) - Sister Fucker, as well as orchrestratung mass genocide (Quicksilver) - And pretty much doing all the fucked up shit Stevil has done in Secret Empire but succeeded (Nick Fury)

I remember reading this book, and dang, never had a taste of Avengers comics like the Ultimates. It had cool parts, it had weird parts, and it had REALLY WEIRD PARTS. *ehem*, ᴴᵘˡᵏ ᵃⁿᵈ ᴳᶦᵃⁿᵗᵐᵃⁿ *ehem* And to anyone who saw the Ultimate Avengers animated movie, you were either disappointed or you kept rewatching the Hulk vs Avengers scene.

Ikr. This feels so weird seeing our favorite heroes being reduced to these pessimistic, disillusioned, cynical, and down right demeaning people. I'm not sure if I'll like this variation of the team. But damne it was it hilarious to see the Hulk, on a rampage just to smash in Friddy Prince Junior's face in. Lamo thank to most that was the highlight of The Ultimates. That or Hank being a total narcissist sociopath that would abuse/torture he's own wife just because he felt in he's own words "mad him feel small". God, the Hank Pym in the main Marvel Universe is piece of work, but aleast he's helpful. This guy doesn't deserve sympathy, if anything the only place he's gonna go in life is eather an mental institution or the morg if doesn't keep that ego and mouth of he's check.

The Ultimate Universe is a product of it's time, it started out promising but in the end it became chocked full bad storylines and overly-edgy imagery.

@Kevin Byrnes ha, no. It was overly edgy from the start. Ultimate Spider-Man was the only good series from the Ultimate Universe but I wouldn't call 1610 Spider-Man the best since he himself had issues and the series also messed up already great characters like Venom, Carnage, Kraven. Everything else from X-Men to the Ultimates sucked from being overly edgy more so than any storyline from the 90's. They had their good moments but in the end of it's life it was a shit show of ideas with potential that fell flat on its face.

It’s dark but without anything to say it’s the complete opposite of Lee’s vision of superheroes being the upholders of hope

It's not because it's darker. It's because all the characters are pricks (except Spider-Man and a few other exceptions) and it's unnecessarily edgy.

This was the first part of the ultimates vol 1. The second part Is a lot better, the clímax against the chitauri was epic. Solemnly the reason why i love the book.

And also the second half was the inspiration for the first Avengers movie. But It was a lot better in the comic in my opinion.

Okay this book was. Meh. It had its amazing parts. Nick Fury. Fucking loved him. I loved the end where Tony, Steve, and Thor chatted and had that little dinner party since. I like my heroes having real lives and real friends. Like Batman with Barry Allen or Clark Kent or Dick Grayson with Wally West or anyone of the Titans. I like the idea but it fucks up in some places. The Hulk stuff wasn't the best. Honestly they could of used Abomination or Destroyer or Crimson Dynamo. So Ultimates Vol. 1 was. Meh. That's it. Just meh.
