What Is Techwear Really?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I wanted to make a video on my views of what exactly techwear is. There are many different facets of it and I think the community will be able to grow and accept more enthusiasts every day.

I have always said that techwear exists in the space where functionality and aesthetics intersect. As such it is never in a fixed state, but rather a moving and evolving meme. In practice this means I choose pieces that integrates with my lifestyle and environment, while stylistically rides the edge between social acceptability and cosplay. For me this manifests as a curated personal uniform of black tactical cargos, black boots or minimalist sneakers and sandals, black uniqlo airism baselayers, black athletic longsleeve or hoodie, a softshell or hardshell jacket, a tactical backpack, duffel, or sling, and a shemagh or buff. This covers 95% of climate conditions where I live and most of my daily activities from work to workout to most everyday endeavors in between. The only excess pieces I have are cold gears needed 4-6 weeks a year, water wear, one set of casual tech trousers and polo for when I really need to blend in, and a tailored black suit with black ties and dress shoes for weddings and funerals.

That seems to be the common sense between all definitions of techwear: it has to fit the individual's lifestyle and habits and give enough room for each other to do what he wants to do. and your uniform sounds practical and simple enough to fit to almost every situation you encounter.

Dressing in the best fabrics possible for the weather is my ideal of techwear and of course more features geared towards a city dweller such as media pockets and snack modules

I'm a latecomer to the techwear community but i have been wearing technical fabric items and have had a similar aesthetic for a long time. to me its exactly as you said form+function merging with aesthetic. imo it doesnt always have to be all the tech materials all the time just like you said. if some of my outfits are not %100 techwear i"m ok with that. but i guess its not really for me to say. i"m learning to have more of my own style and you and a lot of other channels have said making things personal is what fashion is all about. i guess if it looks good and gives the wearer confidence thats whats up. thanks and please keep up the content!

i guess there is a certain amount of functionality everybody needs, and this is depending on the person's lifestyle. the more active somebody llives (cycling, running, exercising in cothes, hiking, being outside and inside buildings) and the more adverse the weather is, the more functionality one needs. the form is dependent on fit (and therefore body type and decreasing movement restriction) and style (which is inherently personal and dependent on the wearers environment). The definition of techwear is so hard because these variables are different for everybody, so there will always be discuccions about "is this or that techwear?". I like that the DIY part of techwear gets more and more traction and more and more shops in the internet offer functional materials that we can make into garments of the desired form and function.

@@sclr yeah, 1" seems to be better than 40mm for most pants ... i switched to 1" webbing myself after getting some more cargo pants where the thick webbing and buckles have a hard time fitting through.

I bought a pair of Kuhl Pants "Raid" style at REI about five years ago. It's like wearing nothing at all, lightweight, suuuper stretchy, but the asthetic is very straight leg, so I sometimes wear it with calf high socks.

I feel like techwear is more for boys. So I want to ask if I (as a girl) can wear it, because when I want to buy some techwear trousers it only fits for boys and its too big for me. So I was wandering where can I buy some techwear for girls with a lots of pockets like boys have. (Also please excuse me for my bad English, its my second language)

if it has technical properties and advanced tailoring, then in my eyes it tech. I believe there is so much gatekeeping due to the fact that if you let everyone with the over the top strap wear, post their fits and ideas then it would become clogged and deviate from the core values of techwear, that the likes of errelson has layed down.

On the other hand if you exclusively have fits composed of regular looking clothes made from performance fabrics, it is in my opinion no longer techwear. A futuristic aesthetic is in my opinion a vital component that drives the style - the only real question is what the adopter’s vision of the future is, filtered through the cultural zeitgeist of that time.

callum russell Greyman techwear doesn’t really exist as a style because a grey man, by definition, looks like everyone else to blend into the crowd. It’s a tactical concept that bled into the techwear scene and more useful as a descriptor than an aesthetic.

@@M0ebius it's definitely an aesthetic though. I understand its to blend into the crowd but all grey men I've seen end up with very minimal, sleek silhouette. I do agree that you do need the performance and style to be techwear though but my main focus is the performance

If you want to go purely for the aesthetics and don’t want to spend a lot of money on clothing, is it still okay to name it “techwear” or is that a problem in any sort?

I've never heard of "tech wear". I found myself on your channel looking to add Velcro cinch cuffs to the bottom of a pair of super baggy hiking convertible pants from Columbia. From a functional perspective, they're extremely "tech", but they definitely don't look like any of the examples you showed. I like what I see. I don't know shit about fashion nor do I try to be fashionable, but I've always liked the tapered look and I love cargo pants and shorts. I wonder if my style falls into "hiker core"? Anyway, interesting stuff... My biggest problem when buying anything is that I'm small... almost every time I find something I like, it doesn't come in 28x28... OR, if it does come in 28 waist, the thighs are way too tight, because I guess if you have a small waist, your legs are twigs, right? So, then I try the 30s, but they're just way too loose and when I use a belt, then there's a load of excess bunched up material... I really need to get a machine someday.
