'What is stopping us becoming Ukraine 2.0?': The Estonian women preparing for war
In the months since the invasion of Ukraine, Estonians, who share a border with Russia, are increasingly concerned about potential Kremlin aggression.
Subscribe to The Guardian on KZread ► bit.ly/subscribegdn
Despite the threat being low, more than 1,000 ordinary women have volunteered to join the Women's Defence Organisation since the conflict began. Car mechanic Mari Klandorf is one. She now spends her weekends training in first aid, guerrilla warfare and firearms and says: 'Russia might not be coming tomorrow, or the next day, but I want to be prepared.'

Estonia didn't gain independence in 1991. It regained its independence, since the country was occupied by the Soviets. There was a recognised Estonian government in exile from 1944 to 1991. Estonia got independent same time as Finland. Thus it's more than a 100 year old state at this point.

@@looduselaps what are you on about? Estonia celebrated its 100th anniversary on 24 February 2018, precisely because we had a functioning government in exile during the Soviet occupation. So, de jure Estonia never cased to exist as an independent state. Even though de facto we weren't independent from 1940-1944 (then a brief moment before the Soviets reoccupied Tallinn, the National Committee of the Republic of Estonia proclaimed itself the supreme power. With official government in exile being declared in 1953 in Oslo) and then till the de facto restoration of our independence in 1991.

@@mangalores-x_x Estonia had a recognised government in exile till the restoration of our independence in 1991; while the Estonian SSR wasn't recognised by a lot of Western nations. Estonia, along with other Baltic States, never chose to become Soviet. We were just an occupied North European state. Russian 49 year occupation doesn't define us.

Amazingly good stylish English skills for car maintenance professionals. I am amazed. I am aware it a country with IQ, and educated skills. They have invested so much in knowledge (like other Northern countries too)... always jaw-dropping compared to Hungary, where so few people talk even an educated Hungarian....(there are others countries like Hun, in EU, who seem happy to stay stupid, its not my point) same awareness in individual responsibility regarding defense preparedness... One thing you need to understand about Eastern Europeans: we don't hate Russians, but for sure as hell we do hate the Russian governments! And we are kinda fed up! Some people say it's about communism, but it goes way back. It didn't matter if it were the tzars, the soviets or the present day oligarchs... Russian governments have always been authoritarian and have oppressed their neighbors for hundreds of years. What blows our Eastern European minds nowadays and does not make sense to us at all is that Russia has a country bigger than Pluto, they have more nukes than the Americans and they somehow still feel threatened by countries like Moldova, Baltic states, Georgia, Ukraine or whatever... I mean... come on, it's the 21st century.... and they wonder why countries like Estonia take up arms this way? :)
Muy valientes, felicitaciones deben estar preparadas, nunca se sabe saludos, desde 🇨🇴🇨🇴🦾🦾

"Retreating" toothless old bear, with smaller number of troops that were deployed in Ukraine against the defenders (~150-200k vs ~250-400k), capture more and more land every day from the second largest army in in Europe on their land, and that army was trained by NATO. Offensive is going slow because of east side of Ukraine has tons of fortified areas. Never underestimate your enemy.

Just having the basic skills to protect yourself and if need be your country should be compulsory now. and quite honestly I think it would help to rejoin this fractured nation. The esprit de corps it develops is always good.
