Estonia Prepares For Russian Invasion | My Neighbour, Russia

My Neighbour, Russia by RTS Radio Television Suisse
With the precedent of the war in Ukraine, Estonia lives in fear of being attacked in its turn. Thousands of Estonian civilians, via the Estonian Defense League, are preparing to counter a dreaded invasion. So the country barricades itself, trains its troops and tears itself apart from its Russian-speaking minority. It has even called on robotics and artificial intelligence to defend itself with hybrid weapons.

There are tens of thousands of Russian speakers who do not know basic Estonian and who have lived here since WWII. It our own, the Estonians" fault. We make it very easy for them, so they do not have to. One can get Russian service in all hospitals, government offices, libraries, everything. And most Russians take it for granted. They just come in and say "Zdrastje" (Hallo in Russian, and just start speaking Russian. And 99% of Estonians will speak Russian to them. It WILL change as we have less and less people who know Russian. Russian is no longer a compulsory foreign language in schools (no foreign language in estonian education system is compulsory. There are A, B and C foreign languages. A one starts in 1 or 2 grade, B in 6 grade and C in high schools. And there may be additional languages available in different schools. What those languages will be, is up to the students (in real life, schools, because the students may choose German for example , but the school may not have the teacher for it. But the point is, most students nowadays do not choose Russian. So young Estonians simply do not know Russian anymore. It was forced upon us for so long that now most people want to get as far away from it as possible. And soon the Russians living here just have to know Estonian to live everyday lives. Not to mention getting a normal job. So I would not worry, it will all happen naturally. Unless, of course, Russia will want to swallow us again. But this time we will be really really ready and I do not think it is going to happen. As long as we are ready, of course. To avoid war here, we constantly have to be very ready for it.

Imagine living in a "foreign" country all your life: being born there, living there, finishing HS there, working there (opportunities: learning language in school, practicing with other kids in kindergarten & school or as adult in workplace), yet still not knowing a single word )or only few very basic sentences...which is the level so many of these russians living there have) in the language of the country you live in. THIS is the reality in Estonia/Baltics, and Ukraine, and all countries on rus border, which were under rus occupation since WW2. Even kids/teens/young people (who were born after all these countries regained independence) do not often know the local languages. To me it seems wild, but that is the situation in many of these places. The kids & grandkids of those who were moved there from elsewhere in soviet union (cause rus tactic is to kill/imprison local ethnicities & replace them with own people...hence rus-speaking workforce brought to these places between 1950-1990) have lived there all Their lives. Yet they have no interest to learn local language, to integrate. This is why I support ending all rus language education in all these countries...cause learning local language as "second language" does not work...they do not learn. The only way to integrate them is to integrate them since birth...so kindergartens, schools, workplaces...services to people (doctor, library, store) only in local language. I know that a majority of these russian in these countries do not want to learn local languages, integrate...but there should be only two choices: either you become a citizen or you move to a country your heart belongs to (in their case its terrorussia). These people in my eyes are foreign agents & all these countries are letting them live there, and not integrate, and not become full citizens (but they often have the option to vote at local elections!), and support the invading neighbour. I cannot understand how they are not seen as security threat. I cannot understand why they are not sent across the river...to live in the country their heart actually belongs to & wishes to be in. I cannot imagine not knowing the language of the country I live in, Neither did my grandparents. Neither do most people, who have moved (freely or have ended up elsewhere as refugees) to a different country.

Whats the difference between Russian or Jewish? Chinese or Japanese? or American or Mexican? NON.If you have little knwoledge than you should stick from commenting online. Most Russians who live in baltic state are citizens, people who dont want war or conflict, but they have rights as well and they will be offended when someone tries to destroy their culture, because its them who pay taxes, its them who are keeping Estonia running, its them and their parents and grandparents who defended the country and gave their lives to fight Nazis, so who has right to destroy the history and culture?. Im from Latvia myself, i love my country and want it to be bigger and better than what it is now, but im also proud that im Russian who lives there. Currently i moved to Estonia and i see lots of showoff and propaganda to make money and turn people away from real problem. The war in Ukraine is not ours, its should stay between Russia and Ukraine because Ukraine decided to make stupid moves few years ago and now simple citizens are strugling. Prices go up, spendings are increasing, problems are touching every industry. Its ok for Britts or Yankies as they live far away from conflict borders, but this shit is touching us, the ones who live near it. So keep your mouth shut and dont speak about someone offended if you dont know the history.

Please, don't neglect current situation. Learn about first aid, medicine, tactics, make your emergency bag, find out where's the shelters in your area, make a plan what to do in case of invasion, discuss it with your family, friends, search for other handy information etc. You can't prevent bad things to happen and you can't be prepared for 100% as well. why west don't like Putin ? Kazakhstan gave 90% of its oil to the United States when Nazarbayev was president, and everything is fine with shaking hands with Western rulers. Putin is disliked by the West because he did not give Russian oil and gas to Western TNCs. And he even partially took back what was given away under Yeltsin. This behavior of Putin sets an undesirable example for other enslaved peoples and therefore such a example should be punished in an exemplary manner.

why west don't like Putin ? Kazakhstan gave 90% of its oil to the United States when Nazarbayev was president, and everything is fine with shaking hands with Western rulers. Putin is disliked by the West because he did not give Russian oil and gas to Western TNCs. And he even partially took back what was given away under Yeltsin. This behavior of Putin sets an undesirable example for other enslaved peoples and therefore such a example should be punished in an exemplary manner.

Fun historical fact. Estonia, despite its minute size has won Russia in war. Namely Vabadussõda, where in odds 1 against 42 soldiers Esonians managed not only to halt the bolchevik invasion, but to persevere and win the war. Yes, it was harsh and grueling task for men and women of that era 1918-1920. But it shows from which type of wood these people are made of.

This is very lazy journalism, to the point of being damaging. They came already with the story in their heads, and they didn't bother to actually listen. For example, the images in the streets of Tallinn showing bombed out parts are from an art project that has been very controversial. Estonians are not joining "more and more paramilitary groups"; there is only one, Kaitseliit, and it's run by the Ministry of Defence (it's also an organization with more than 100 years of history, btw). Also, Narva a hotbed of arms trafficking? That is plain false. Who scripted this? Arles the border guard doesn't know anyone on the other side of the rive because Ivangorod (the Russian town) is a closed town, much like all Russian border towns. And, seriously, showing a bunch of Soviet nostalgics who *are in a pro-Kremlin group* as representatives of the Russian minority is just plain nuts. The "journalists" have clearly not been able to go beyond their own preconceptions. And *that* leads them to conclude in the introduction to this video that Estonia is "tearing itself apart from its Russian minority" when there's been projects going on for years to do exactly the opposite?! This is not journalism, but sheer clownery.

I hope you will also learn Estonian. I mean, properly learn it, not just enough to get by. We have amazing culture, theatre, literature etc. There is so much to enjoy that one completely misses out on if he/she speaks the language maybe only on B2 level. Unfortunately, most Russians here live in their own parallel world. I do not think I have ever seen a Russian person in theatre in Estonia, for example. Ever. Last week, March 14 we had the Day of Estonian language. I went to a concert of Estonian music and poetry. And it was very surprising for me that there were a few Russians there. Did not expect it. They were probably there for one of the two reasons: it was free, or they were friends/relatives of some of the choir members who were Russian.

@@user-zy1vp2sw9c Well, a language is something you learn as you go. If you get B1/B2, you just keep progressing further and further by speaking to people. That's how I learned English, but it was easier because almost everyone speaks English, and the Internet is mostly English-speaking, while Estonian is very narrow in comparison. Still going to try to learn, but man it is very hard and stressful. I didn't get proper rest for 2 months because of the cources.

The Kaitseliit are not private Militias. This is a Government Militia of both volunteers and mandated reservists, similar to Finland or in days of old, Switzerland(who has of recent lobotomise their military into a joke). Any private militia here would be a national security risk as they could be backed and used by russia. The closest thing to this in America would be how centuries ago you had militia in some parts of America which were mandatory to be in and were government forces. But here the Kaitseliit is better funded to have regular army weapons and equipment. (Most armour and the artillery remains in the regular military due to our too small population and limited money.)

Those ''militia'' guys have access to LMT's R20 rifles which are standard issue for estonian army so i think those guns are provided by the government for their training. In Finland we have a active reservists who have completed their conscription in the army, who train on their free time and people buy their own kits and even ''reservist'' self loading rifles but cant buy machine guns. Its a common misconception in the US that European civilians don't have access to firearms. If i remember correctly you can even get a CCW licenses in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Chechia. Some countries have barrel length and mag size restrictions for rifles like in some US states, but here in Finland you can get standard mags and a shorter than 16'' barrel AR-15 for example pretty easily and silencers are a no hassle.

Very very few Estonians have guns. I do not think our police carries guns even, I"m not sure.
