Mastodon feels like the early days of the internet & Twitter where you weren't anxious about posting something in case it got some toxic comments. Twitter has some really toxic areas. Humans are only meant to really interact with a couple hundred people really, so something like Mastodon with lots of small instances seems to cater to that more so than one gigantic global network like Twitter or Facebook, while still letting instances interact with each-other. I left Facebook years ago, & was waiting for something free & open source to appear, Mastodon fills that for me. Great to see the upsurge in users & instances since Musk bought Twitter.

This trailer is a lie. They claim "anyone can create their own instance of Mastodon with their own set of rules" and "all instances are owned operated and moderated by the community that creates them" and "no corporate surveillance" yet they censor right leaning instances while keeping literal anarchist and communist instances. And I don't mean exaggerating and calling liberals anarchists and communists, I mean actual anarchist and communist imagery and names being used. The excuse is that right wing instances are "hate speech" and that "hate speech is unacceptable", yet anarchist and communist instances advocate for riots, murderous revolutions, and beating up police. Most communists support Stalin (responsible for the Holodomor) and Julius Malema, living advocate for anti white (and anti Indian if that makes you care more) racism. It's clear they don't actually censor hate speech. And regardless, even if you do thing right wing instances should be deleted, that still means they are watching what you post, and do in fact have the ability to (and in some cases will) erase your instances if they disagree with it. Not to mention flaws with instances being hard to find in the first place. They can definitely and probably do choose which instances are favored.

Good stuff! xD Im kinda hoping that more decentralized networks reach technical majority sooner rather than later. Could mean that things become less datagrabby and more diverse/chaotic again (and possibly more free) like in the 'old internet' (reddit is to blame for the term ;))

What makes mastodon effective is the "free software" philosophy of the AGPL license, which requires that deployed instances of the "open source" mastodon software share the software and all modifications to it with their users. Permissive open source licenses don't require this, enabling corporations to effectively "close" and privatize the codebase.

Having a global tab beyond the federal tab that tracks the top trending posts from every instance would be very effective and will probably keep the site from feeling like an echo chamber or bubble. Also good for the social media to feel more social and less isolating. As a user I think I'd go insane if I couldn't see what the entire platform is up to while I'm restrained to a tiny bubble.

question 1: is there an index of all platforms/servers implementing ActivityPub and/or OStatus which are all connected in a mesh? or a list of all meshes and then each mesh with the list of all servers? question 2: who's running each server? and who pays for the resources needed to run a server? and if that server gets corrupted and my account is stored there, is my account compromised and in danger to lose all the data, all the account? or it gets duplicated on several connected servers which are in the same mesh?

    1. There are a few sites that list instances of particular services, like fediverse.network/. 2. Whomever makes the server, and any appointed admins, I'd imagine. // Like they said in the video, many instances are crowdfunded, so resources are paid for by members in that case (I've seen Patreon being used). // That's generally the case, yes, but good admins would have regular server backups. If I understand this correctly, I think your posts would only exist on other servers if someone one another server is following you or shares your posts. I could be wrong there, though.

The particular instance that the guy who created Mastodon posts on is indeed a highly censored echo chamber, but Mastodon itself is not. Pretty much. Though the main difference that a user is tied with their initial registration to one choosen community but should be able to access the whole Fediverse and its services. The other difference is that a instance cannot be "banned"/deleted, but they can be blocked by other instances, which means they can get isolated/contained in their reach influence if enough instances decide to block them.

Very interesting. I'm curious of a few things. Pretty ignorant of how things work online (Truly... correct me where I'm wrong, I very well may be lol) I'm knocking around ideas looking into the potential issues in the future with a pessimistic lens... 1st.) - Is it the case that individuals manage the rules to abide for their "instance", or is it that the each server determines their own "rules" to abide by, which is managed by a collective of "instances"? --Assuming the later (perhaps wrongly), IF a server has certain rules determined by the owner or group, and they boot violating "instances" from their server (likely moving to other more tolerant servers), but the accumulated "instances" that willingly abide their rules eventually grows, doesn't that create a bubble/echo chamber? (for better or for worse)? 2nd.) - If a privately owned server/"instances determines its own rules, and maybe deems another server, or individual on it to be incompatible with their server's rules; can they ban either one as they choose? What of someone who wants to communicate with them, but cant because of the group they're in that banned them.. 3rd.) - The free market capitalist in me sees viability of the idea that "bad" or poorly managed servers of "instances" will fall, and better servers rise where no centralized government makes the rules.. but the potential issue I see is a decentralized servers clustering into countless bubbles based on ideological community standards.. whether pro/anti free speech/ prejudice/ political party/ racial segregation... CAN you control who privately owned servers/SHOULD you? E.g. - Edge Lords on this server, and SJWs on that server... Unable to communicate.. 4th.) Obviously larger servers with more free communication standards between servers/instances will exist... I do realize maybe I'm nit picking.. but in the long run, I see potential for bubbles forming like sediment jars of social media groups.. 5th.) Will privately owned "Mastodon" servers be unilaterally held to a principle of open/free communication between all servers? or is that violating the idea behind decentralizing the whole thing? - Lastly - My general understanding is that "bubbles" is the whole idea of the thing, but with privately owned bubbles rather than centralized standards that creates one specific bubble... like we see with Twitter, and Facebook.. Privately owned and privately managed... is Privately owned, and publicly managed the case here? I'm not clear on specifics.. just inquiring about them basically.. - Thanks :)

Instance admin here, I'll try my best to answer all your questions. 1: Each instance is it's own separate entity with it's own list of rules. Each server also maintains it's own ban list so just because one instance blocks you does not mean everyone also blocks you. The only instance you really have to care about for rules is your local instance. If you break a rule on the local instance you'll be contacted by your instance admin but you won't necessarily be hounded by 50 other server admins for breaking their rules since they do not have jurisdiction over your account. At most, they will contact the instance admin who will then determine if you are acting in bad faith, breaking the rules, or representing the instance in a way that jeopardizes the instance's ability to federate with other instances. 2: Bans can be tweaked so that instead of blocking all communications between two instances it will simply not show up in the Federated Timeline on the instance with the ban in place. Bans can be as permissive as a simple mute, which allows users who follow users on the banned instance to still communicate (called Silence) but will prevent those who don't follow them from seeing their messages in the Federated Timeline. The other way is much more restricted (Suspend) where all media from a banned instance is deleted from the local instance and users who follow someone on a banned instance will not be able to communicate at all. Usually admins are not going to slam on the Suspend block unless your instance is engaging in questionable/illegal behaviors. 3: Yes there are bubbles of instances that share common rules and interests but because of the decentralized nature it works itself out. Depending on your interests you may gravitate to one instance more than another. This is by design. While you can't control who gets to run a server/instance you can use the banning features mentioned above to ensure your users are not warring against people who don't share the same views. While in some ways yes this seems like something you wouldn't want to do, it's an unspoken requirement in order to prevent harassment and other instances from defederating with you due to ineffective management. 4: The large scale general instances are not immune from having to police their users, just because they hold more users just means the admin team is working just as hard to ensure that everyone is playing fairly. You would think an instance that supports total freedom of speech would contain more users, right? No. What ends up happening is other instances begin blocking these kinds of instances because of that lack of moderation (causing people to leave in order to not be blocked). By offering a safe haven for all forms of speech you're actually hurting your instance so it's always good to find a balance. Other instance admins will be more open to federating with an instance that takes a stand against problematic users than those who do not. So while it's possible for large instances to have their own bubbles inside themselves, these instances are going to be policing their users more than instances directed towards a specific niche due to their size and breadth of topics with more potential for disagreements and arguments. 5: Mastodon instances are not required to federate with anybody. While that's obviously against the whole design goals of Mastodon, it can be done and nobody will get angry with you. The problem those instances will face would be no different than trying to launch your own social network from scratch. How do you attract users to your platform if there isn't anybody to talk to? That doesn't mean these instances can't be successful with the right marketing, it's just going to take a lot more effort than if you were to simply allow open federation. Other's may criticize you for turning the platform private but your not doing anything the AGPL 3.0 doesn't already allow you to do. The only thing you aren't allowed to do under that license is to modify Mastodon and not make those changes public. Under the AGPL 3.0 even just using the application in a web browser is considered distribution and source code must be made available to anyone who uses it which means that it is also entirely possible for your users to take that source code and make it available publicly and there isn't anything you can do to stop it. 6: Twitter and Facebook aren't specific bubbles though, they employ algorithms to try and manipulate your timeline to show you stuff that they have determined would be of interest to you. There is no way for you or me to audit their algorithms to determine why something showed up in our timelines other than the fact that it did show up. Mastodon is different because there is no algorithms at play, it is simply relaying messages between people whom you already follow. The Federated timeline is going to show you every message that instance has received ether from Relay servers or from other people who are being followed on the same instance that have posted that message on the public timeline. Companies are able to manipulate you in ways you cannot see nor prove. There is no fighting with Facebook or Twitter ether so the moment they determine they don't want you on their platform anymore you are effectively banned from society due to their size unlike with Mastodon where a ban from once instance does not stop you from using the platform all together. Hopefully that has answered your questions and if anything I said was confusing or didn't quite make sense please let me know.

If code being open results in being exploited all the time, many open source standards like Linux wouldn't be used for production, but they are. It's actually shoddily written proprietary code that could become more vulnerable as any leaks of source code will only be accessible to non-white hats in the earlier stage. Of course, that's rare too unless the owner of code doesn't practice good security by themselves...

For not being active straight away admitted within two days. I knew you guys "moderated" more, which is a selling point I know but do you feel like you are maybe over correcting? I spend allot of my time outside and when I get home there are certain things I check, Mastodon hadn't joined that list yet. I don't know exactly where I am going with this but this is a little silly huh? By the time I can attempt to reactivate my account is a month? Depending on which server you were joining, that is unfortunately something that happened/happens a lot, mostly because of the massive influx of new users. Some servers decided to aggressively cut everyone out that isn't immediately and consistently active, so that all available slots they have can go to users that are. It sucks, no way to really butter that up. Still, one can join a different federated server and/or try again later when the massive influx of users has gone down a bit.
