I practice Baguazhang. I still amazes me how many Chinese people don't know what Baguazhang is. They always ask me "Is it Taiji?" No it's not Taiji, it's baguazhang. It's also an internal martial art style. It's more of a middle ground between Taiji and Xingyi.

30:04 Imagine spending your days in a playground, jumping around like a lunatic, thinking you can fight. It's kind of crazy how many levels there are to being good at something, in reality. There are people who make the strongest person you know look like a child, and then people who do the same to them, and somebody else who makes them look weak. This applies to everything. Being good at fighting is a real thing. Don't pretend to be tough, or assume you are something without ever testing yourself, or you'll end up in trouble, or humiliated.

What Kirk said at 19:15 seems correct, Jesse Enkamp in his KarateNerdInChina series, introduced us to a KungFu style, this style concealed themselves by posing as incense shop owners. They are called incense shop boxing. Brazil's capoiera was also hidden by just saying we are learning dancing. (I'm not someone who belongs to Hinduism based religions) perhaps along with the hiding fighting by calling it exercise/dance, another thing maybe that buddhism has indian origins(where I see hinduism as a collection of ideas/practices belonging to india, where these ideas would get reformed and changed by the same gurus.) Hinduism related religions believe in ahimsa, so perhaps to make kungfu more in accordance with this beliefe of ahimsa, kung fu masters may have said, "ohh we arent learning to fight".

I think it may be possible some kungfu styles(baji quan) had weapons like trident, but they have hidden the weapons in their Tao Lu, by just depicting them with hands. Now in a world where no one carries tridents, and where people have guns if they want to fight, kung fu has become less effective.

*TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time on desktop computers and laptops OR 25% at a time on smartphone! Access the playback speed controls as follows: *Desktop Computers and Laptops:* open the video, then go to the lower right of the video's screen and click on the settings icon (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time. *Smartphones:* open the video and go to the upper right of the video's screen. You will see 3 dots. Click on them and you will see the link to open the "playback speed" controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you greater control over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

I only come here cuz i like learning about different cultures but 1:26 the english subtitles arent in sync with what was said. Waiguoren" means foreigner, but subtitle says "to learn kong fu". Anyways im a fan of your channel and Kirk. Jiayou! Its interesting that chinese language sounds quite peaceful and not aggressive. In hollywood movies/WWE, beating up people is shown as something cool. The hero even mocks the villain after beating them up eg:Aahsta la vista baby. However some asian movies dont depict senseless aggression as cool. Like in the movie "big brother" donnie yen kind of appologizes to the villain after beaing him up. Similarly fist of legend. How japanese diplomat wants there to be peace, and how Jet Li's fiancee's uncle says purpose of martial arts is not to kill and how they fight was interesting. I like the fact that as compared to hollywood asian movies have little sex appeal and more purity/humility and cuteness.

The issue with gong fu today is alot of the real deal masters have died with the art and people don't remember how to use the taolu in a real fighting situation modern wushu is only performance based traditional wushu is for fighting go to a school that spars and teaches self defense. These people aren't real martial artists if can't be backed up with lineage and practical fighting it isn't wushu

I disagree with the pessimism Kirk had regarding KungFu. In my opinion there are interesting concepts. Like I watched a video by NordWingChun(traces lineage to ipman). He said (and what I understood). 1-Circular blocking is hard to defend, since its not a 1directional force. 2-If a punch comes you dont block it head on, rather at 90. Since head on blocking means you take the impact and your structure gets broken, whereas 90 block means you redirect opponents energy 3-Similarly they do train your reflexes. Karate's Kumite is like chess but with our limbs. WingChun's philosophy is using minimal force, being most economical with regards to energy. So they adopt a square on stance. InternationalWingChun academy youtube channel has great video about wingchun concepts. Moreover why cant we say that these kungfu techniques (instead of mocking it), they evolved and improved to make way into practical techniques that MMA has, I mean these things were useful in ancient world but now we improved upon them.

I don't know alot of Kung Fu is watered down and the rules under which Kung Fu fights occur aren't realistic. Kung Fu is more about spirituality than actual fighting. I prefer Karate because Karate focuses more on fighting than Kung Fu does plus it takes decades to become good at Kung Fu while Karate takes years to become good. Karatekas are also better conditioned and more tough than Kung Fu fighters and they are more durable as well. I think Kung Fu is really just for movies and if you wish to learn Buddhism, I don't think it's a realistic fighting system. There is a Chinese MMA fighter who has taken on and embarrassed many Kung Fu school teachers simply because Kung Fu doesn't practice real fighting. I do think that Kung Fu could be effective but it must be combined with other non-kung fu martial arts to become effective

In reality, aerial karate is just a magnificent form of performance. It is easy to be suppressed by judo, Chinese wrestling, and Brazilian ground skills in practical combat. The kung fu you know is actually called martial arts, which uses extremely small movements to attack the vital parts of the human body.@@tshepokotelo3162
