I know you do social topics, but would you do a video about entertainment and TV shows in China? Me and my friend really like the shows, and would love to know what Chinese people think about their shows.

Personally I haven't met any Chinese person who really likes their TV shows. Even the famous and the global ones they might be didn't hear of it. Like it's an old people and teenager girls thing.

@@stayglitteryqueen I don't know.. maybe play games or exploring 抖音 douyin and 快手 kuaishou, Douyin is like a Chinese version of TikTok. As for watching TV shows, I'm not saying that's my opinion, but that's what I see from Chinese adults. Enjoy watching what you love regardless of what others think girl 🌷

what a great insight into chinese culture, specially as it displays both man and woman's perceptions. Also really fun to watch, and valuable to have people with different accents speaking. Thank you for the video and for sharing these interesting topics in a mandarin student friendly way 🤩

I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who found Jonas very difficult to understand 😅 addressing some of the dislikes though, it's incredibly useful to hear a wide variety of authentic accents, as it opens up the real world of spoken Chinese. It's perhaps best to have already familiarised oneself with the vocab in this text, but afterward this is a great tool to experience informal, natural Chinese as one would hear it in the street.

I have no idea what the previous poster about the laughter was hearing, but I did not ever hear any raucous laughter. Also it is not for me to tell content creators that are working this hard to produce free content (although I became a member) how to provide that content. Interesting topic. I knew there were cultural assumptions about drinking that I did not understand when this has come up in Chinese dramas that I watch to improve my Mandarin. The idea of drinking to the point of drunkenness with work colleagues is frowned upon in the USA, and many a career has been ruined by people who do get drunk and then embarrass themselves in front of their teammates. People would assume if you insisted on doing this, that you were an alcoholic with a problem and were therefore possibly unreliable. So interesting to hear about different customs in different places.

Seems like it must be difficult for people who don't drink. 😓 I personally have never had the desire to do it... But I often got questioned by others about it. This is really interesting! There's so much history behind certain things in drinking culture! I would say it depends on the person for Western culture. In the US, I know people who will offer me stuff two or three times even though I already said no. 😅

Are there board game cafes in China? If so, I think those would be a good way to socialize without the need for drinking

I lived in China ( Qingdao), chinese guys were drinking Tsingdao beer so fast, 1 bottle, 2 bottle.......9pm they were totally drunk

Leerzame video! Toen ik jong was werd er niet gedronken met de baas. Buiten kantoor kende je elkaar niet. Samen eten gebeurde ook niet. Ik weet niet hoe het nu is. Ik vraag me wel af hoe het kan dat mensen in China zo oud worden als er zo veel gedronken wordt.

It's interesting that it's totally accepted to be absolutely stoned in public, in fact encouraged. In the west (Europe / USA), you are seen as low class if you are drunk in public, unless you are under 18 and just starting to learn about drinking. Beer is considered an everyday enjoyment and there are 100s different kinds. Same with wine. Baijo (and schnaps) is consumed in very small quantities. Wonder if Chinese would socially accept a person that does not enjoy alcohol ?

thanks for the video. Here 70% alcohol is used to disinfect wounds! Luckily, I need to take medicine for my heart and for knee pain. It is a good excuse not to drink alcohol when I go to China. Maybe some day China will have alcohol free beer!

To be honest, i think you can attract more new audiences into your channel if you change the thumbnails of videos. The red color looks so eye catching😢 but unfortunately, it gave me the feeling like this isn't the first video that i want to click on if i was a newcomer in your channel❤❤❤

Can you do more street interviews again please?

I often listen to your channel at high volume. And I am very much hindered by the introductory promotional music at the beginning of each video. Could you take it away altogether? Because I'm listening to Chinese at high volume. And at the time when the next video begins, the introductory music is very annoying. I really love your channel. But because of the introductory music, which greatly prevents me from listening to the language at high volume, I am already thinking about other channels. That's a rubbish culture harming one's health. In China I declined all alcohol, and an offer to make advertisement for a beer company that would have paid me RMB 500'000 a year. Most people around me couldn't understand my decision to decline such a high-paying job...

If you consider all of China, urban and rural areas, the majority of Chinese *do not speak standard mandarin* . This includes even young Chinese in urban areas who are college-educated like Jonas. So yeah, our content is meant to help students learn the REAL Chinese you will hear in China - not the standard Chinese you used to hearing from your Chinese teachers.

@@MandarinCorner2 Exactly! I can understand Chinese teachers speaking on KZread quite well but could barely understand spoken Chinese in real life. I think it is a great way to make my ear get used to various kinds of Chinese dialect. Also, Jonas' pronunciation is quite clear to me, far better than, say, people with a Beijing accent.

Jonas pronunciation is clear but he sure mispronounces a few sounds though mNguyen4684 is unable to discern those flaws, perhaps because he just began learning Chinese. (I read 联合早报 every day.) Jonas may attempt to fix the problem perhaps, attempt at least. He does a lot of preparation before recording the blog. I am thankful for that.

@@MandarinCorner2 That’s not a sound argument. You won’t like learning Texan, Aussie, Kiwi, Indian English at Intermediate level, will you? A good argument could be: Jonas’ strengths overwhelm his mispronunciation.

I don't agree at all that he has "terrible pronunciation". It's important to understand different regional accents, but this guy doesn't even have a strong regional accent. I hope Eileen will invite someone with a really strong Beijing accent. I just love that accent.

The problem is not only Jonas's unclear pronunciation, but also the fact that he talks about strange cultural phenomena that he finds on the internet and that on several occasions even Aileen did not know and asked him for the explanation. When a person's pronunciation is already super difficult to understand and, on top of that, he talks about cultural curiosities found on the internet that even the Chinese don't know very well about, it becomes a pretty difficult cocktail to follow for someone who is learning Chinese, even with relatively advanced level. If somebody's level of Chinese is so high that he/she can understand any dialect or any way of speaking, then he/she no longer needs to watch videos on a specialised channel for learning Chinese. This person can simply watch films, TV series or listen to the radio. I'm a real fan of Eileen's channel and I like the fact that she invites different people into the studio to discuss different topics, but honestly I think that inviting people like Jonas doesn't contribute to the popularity of this channel of extremely high quality..

Not everyone in China will speak standard "accentless" Chinese. Think of it as good practice for listening, and there are a million other videos on YT and more content off YT. Personally I like accents so I may be biased.

Very interesting conversation, lots of preparation. But both of you have poor accents. Especially, Jason pronounces n as l, sh as s. Both do not distinguish between n and ng finals. It is jarring. Please fix it. Don’t say, we want the students to be exposed to poor accents.

It shows your understanding of Chinese sounds is poor. Work on it. Another point: you know several languages. You are mixing up multilingualism with multi-literacy. Look up the distinction to realize that your claim is false. In any case, your claim and my criticism are unrelated.

Also appreciation for someone's work and contribution; Eileen's contributions, IMHO, certainly deserve a lot of praise. You attack and point blank offend me for my "poor understanding" of Chinese sounds. You even give an advice about how I should conduct my future life: to work on Chinese language sounds. Admittedly, I do not speak any of Chinese language sounds. And - which language? I was also not aware of the existence of an absolute standard regarding Chinese language sounds. Do you know about it? Would you tell us about it? If so, please include reliable, recognized, and respected scholarly sources for your statements. Also, let me notice that in your message you talk about "poor accents", now you are berating me for not knowing what is multi-literacy. I have a question: What is your problem?

Interesting comment, sir, but your grammar is terrible. You don't say 'you both do not distinguish... but rather 'neither of you distinguish ....'. You have to put a comma after 'But'. Also, you need to indicate speech with speech marks. Like this: Don't say: "We want students to be exposed to ..." That's much clearer than the way you put it. As for you, you shouldn't expose people to your poor grammar and unclear writing style. Their English could be ruined forever! You even get the name of the guest wrong. It's not 'Jason'. It's Jonas! You have to pay more attention! As for your criticsm, that's also invalid. Learners need to be exposed to the speech of regular Chinese speakers. Otherwise, you'll only ever be able to understand the language in a controlled setting like a university. You won't understand real Chinese. 你明白了吗？😁

Aileen is awesome. She has grit and entrepreneurship. She didn’t even pass senior high school, but launched this great channel. Jonas is awesome too. He comes with great preparation. I criticized his pronunciation only. Of course there’s a standard form of Chinese, first codified during Republican era, later refined and documented by government and scholars. It was needed to unify a country populated by scores of dialects. If you knew the distinction between multilingualism and multi-literacy, you won’t make the false claim. An honest feedback will help the Channel. Your kind of uncritical adulation will not. There are a few who criticized Jonas’s pronunciation, not only me. You didn’t notice even after a few pointed out because you can’t discern it. I hope you don’t merely read English subtitles. 😝
