I remember being a little kid and holding two Skittles in my hand- one orange and one green and saying to my mom "Look, it's 6 and 7!" She was then inevitably confused so I tried to explain my comment because I thought she just wasn't understanding at first. So I told her that the Skittles were like numbers because their colors are the same- orange is 6 and green is 7! Needless to say, she then worried I was mentally challenged in some way.

Nice knowing from you! In my mind, since I was a child the number 6 is associated with the color magenta (and feminine) and growing up it always goes to me that the number 7 is of an orange or yellow color.

6 is lime green, and seven is yellow, not orange.

Synesthesia is weird. My form is that things "feel" like colors to me. Pain is a dull red-violet, my covers are green, though I didn't know what synesthesia was for the longest time, so I didn't know other people don't see the world that way.

That’s how I am with Aphantasia! Just figured out a few months ago I have aphantasia and didn’t know other people actually got pictures and words in their heads) My mom has synesthesia, but I’m realizing I might have it slightly too, not with Visual though. But just recently I realized my basing colors for school subjects is part of that. To the point of arguing over the color of Math (red) I remember in school I’d insist on certain notebooks and folders with different animals or colors, like, science was green, but it could be Peacock 🦚 feathers too

Can anyone tell me where's the drum shape in the video?

I saw a girl on tik tok who was seemingly speaking nonsense and I completely understood what she was saying. Another in the comments said she has synesthesia. So I took to KZread and I am filled with relief and joy that this is a real thing. My life is so complete. I’m so excited about this.

My mom never understood my synesthesia at first when I insisted on grabbing a precise color pen for a certain letter. Then she talked to my grandma who has a "light" version of it and realized something weird was going on. I didn't realize this phenomenon had a name until my early teens. Now 10+ years later I tend to not make a big deal out of it but tell people if they somehow find out (I remember text and numbers really well thanks to their colors and people sometimes freak out)

I was like that with pens and notebooks for school. It would feel weird if math was “green” not “red” or if I wrote certain information in blue instead of black. But I don’t know if I would regard that as synesthesia because a lot of people related to that on tiktok but I definitely see images when I listen to music. I don’t think the average person is like that

I always associate random aches or pains with colors shapes and textures. They make perfect sense to me, but when I try to explain what I see to other people they probably think I’m insane

Music is my particular flavor. I'm rather annoying to watch movies with because I often narrate where the movie is going based on the tones and speed or pitch of the score. When I'm by myself, it's a landscape as he described, but that's how it manifests around others.

I am a natural Synesthete since childhood. In my opinion, it is more an extra sense or a gift, the best gift I ever had.

My child has this . We never knew because he never said anything . He thought it was normal until he went to college and they talked about it . That’s when he realizes not everyone sees letters in color. I don’t know he did . . He is very smart and musical . His memory is incredible , almost scary .

I have it and just realized it wasn’t normal in college. My memory is really good when it comes to plants, animals and taste. Different foods and spices have different colors and ‘animations’ which makes me really good at guessing all Ingredients in food, my friends will put mystery ingredients in my food sometimes and I will always call it out and get it correct. Different animals also have different ‘frequencies’ either when said or the sounds they make. I want to go into field biology or paleontology cause it’s so cool.

When I listen to music I always like to imagine a story behind it, it doesn't matter if the lyrics don't match the "animation", I go for the instrumentals and imagine all kind of stories, my favorite kind of songs are the "cyberpunk" ones, I imagine different types of fights and it's really amazing, also watching lots of movies and animes has helped me to improve the way I imagine the stories. I would like to be an animator and illustrator so I guess having synesthesia has been a bless to me!

exactly the same for me!! i don't really associate colours to specific numbers, but ik for me 7 is a handsome, fit male with pink colour and that's why i consider it my lucky number hahha. when i write a poem or song i see a whole movie behind it like u said. my family thinks i' crazy for being so specific but now ik what it is!

I always told people the reason i make video edits is because its what i see in my head. First i visualize the music in my head then i can apply it to something visual. Music composition is very important for me. Modern pop music just doesn’t have the sophistication. They are just use template. Now look at the 80s and before. they produced these massively complicated arrangements without the computer technology today. That why i dislike most mainstream music. Rarely a properly crafted song makes it popular. Otherwise it just appeal to general accepted music taste or “if it not broken dont fix it (improve)” Someone asked me “do you like to listen to music instrumentals” i responded that you have to realize instruments are just a member of the chorus of song. Yes, theres no lyrics, but the guitar is singing.

My mother, sister and I all have it. Mine is the strongest. Every word, song, letter, number etc., are all different colors. It's helped me with math, remember phone numbers, remembering names... I can't imagine seeing nothing but black. Would it be black? So crazy. I feel so blessed to be gifted with this. I always forget that others don't think like this. I've had it my whole life and it's just what's normal for me!

SAME! I guess that's why I get excited about certain songs, beats etc. I tried to explain it to a few people and they look at me like I'm crazy.

My mom has this and didn’t know it until her mid 40s when I was telling her about a character in a book I read had it and I described it to her. Suddenly her whole world made sense. She can’t drive through construction zones because the horses have blinking lights that make noise and aren’t in synch. She doesn’t eat green vegetables because they taste green (which might be a normal explanation for a picky eater or something but she says green m&ms taste the same so she won’t eat those either). Having a clock blinking in the house after a power outage used to drive her batty because she could hear it in other rooms. We all thought she was just a little mad until we found out about this

My synesthesia is such that I could see fireworks bursting out in the sky while listening to Prokofiev violin sonata no.2 by Sayaka Shoji, and I can smell pleasantly scent of white peony or baked goods while listening to Maxim Vengerov playing certain violin pieces, and certain violinists’ tones chill me down or warm me up in the surface of my skin

Same and l make a lot of ocs and worlds (well same world but different places and storylines) and l redesign them and all.I sometimes have days or weeks when l focus on that character and their story and another time that character.Started at 10 when l watched avatar Kora ,the flash and my little pony, l started to develop characters which stared as fan inverts while listening to solo or other clean bandits songs then l expanded.I have characters named Yamatao and Yamataea (Don’t know how to spell them but) and many more.

I spent a good part of my life not being able to explain how "I see flavour and recipes in waves and circles....", always had to say "you know, like ratatouille" and be looked like an idiot by many. I feel a bit better today that I might have something that scientists have know for a while.

I don't particularly see colours when listening to music but i do see movement of patterns and shapes and this movement travels throughout my body. I thought everyone was like that.

My senesthysia, growing up was, was that each name had ther own drawing of lines. Example: the name Angela has medium waves at least 5, on a slanted direction to the right and short in length. Or when I see intercultural marriages and people I see beautiful colors gently moving on to form other colors. Similar to a rainbow but in different tones of color. Same for languages and ther similarities.

I’ll see shapes and colors when I’m thinking deeply of things that don’t have words( I am a top speed runner in a video game and I imagine how the game mechanics work) also I always see shapes and colors with music and sometimes the tone of people’s voices

I experience sound as visual and tactile. the resonance in each individual note/sound provides mass to the sound, the dissonance in each note is what informs the timbre/texture, the surface of the mass, and hence, the material aspect. Some sounds have a lot of dissonant texture, they appear more transparent and complex. the speed of the transient, how fast the onset of the sound is communicates how hard or soft the material is, much like how you compare punching a wall or a pillow. The melody is what provides the emotion, so the resonance and dissonance of the melody communicates the more traditional way of looking at how music makes us feel. Melodies and harmonies provide the colors/emotions/narratives, but the actual sensation of the sounds is what builds the space and movement of objects.

Arash Arfazadeh Do you feel that having perception this way gives you extra insight maybe into the meaning of sounds? Like does lying or sincerity or sarcastic or sinister in a persons voice have a specific visual or tacticle quality that gives you insight into their intentions? Or maybe in songs?

Just discovered I had this tonight when my husband asked me to help him tune his guitar. I don't think he would have believed me when I told him it didn't "look" right if my 7yr old hadn't spoke up and talked about the half circles also. I am 36yrs old and when I tell you it sent me into a crisis... yeah. I broke down in tears because I realized that 4 out of our 6 family members could not also see the lights fluttering or taste the houseplants just by touching them. It's a lot.

I think I experience synesthesia on psychedelics. Last time I got this new type of mushrooms and during the trip different elements of the music I was listening to was changing the colors of the visuals I was seeing. I was seeing these geometric shapes and each instrument, each note, or each part of the drum set had their own color. The crunchy buzzy guitar riffs where giving this beautiful green, The synthesizers were blue or purple, each cymbal hit gave a burst of violet, and so on... But the strangest thing was that the feelings of the song also had colors. The feelings that were expressed in each sentence of the lyrics also changed the shape and color of the visuals. It was almost like I was experiencing sound, emotions, colors and visuals all as one single entity. They all just melted together and I couldn't distinguish between them. Is this similar to synesthesia?

Psychedelic substances do produce synesthesia, as it allows several parts of the brain to work simultaneously, so creativity which is usually abstract may be displayed while listening to racional sounds -music per se-, which will lead to yourself projecting sort of images, commonly pleasant to the sight, this is not the same synesthesia as having a color for each number but it’s quite similar. I started experiencing synesthesia with LSD and now it has been added to my daily life as if it sorta opened a door that was always closed before my eyes. I’m very grateful of experiencing music in a sensorial way

@@danielfernandezA24 very interesting. I have mild synesthesia too. Music to color or shapes or landscapes. But it's not in my inner eye it's somewhere else. I don't know if I had that always. As a kid I had strong psychical adhd which turned slowly into adhd in my mind. Don't know if that is even possible but it feels like that. But one thing is for sure: Psychedelics enhance this beyond comprehension. One week ago I did my biggest lsd trip and I saw fractal patterns that where connected with sound. Music (psytrance and classic) came out of the colored fractal shapes. This trip changed so much.

While meditating and finding my inner self, it enhanced to unbelievable levels of feel. Creating entire worlds filled with life while at the same I feel,hear, and love everything. Acknowledging oneself in order to love others.

I've had always thought like numbers have own genders and also characters.

OMG I recently started to wonder if everyone sees those vivid “animations” when they listen to music, as it turns out it’s not necessarily common, thanks so much for this video!

I think it's not synesthesia, but I see numbers as distinct shapes. And the shapes fit together in additions etc. I've had this my entire life. Ive definitely had proper synesthesia during a magic mushroom trip. I could see sound and feel colours. It was amazing.

That's super cool, might be a type of synesthesia! My sounds synesthesia registers in my head as shapes and textures, but no colors. While numbers and letters have colors.

What's funny is that I have synesthesia (especially colours) and since I'm really passionate about music and dance, I use my that for doing choreographies or sometimes composing. I know I wouldn't be able to do that if I hadn't synesthesia so I'm really happy about it :) And it really helps me to remember things and make my everyday life colourful

I just found out two days ago that there was a name for what I've been experiencing my whole life! It's a relief to find out other people have this. I thought I was just weird.

Its interesting how everyone experiences their own form. I love love love music and every song is its own “world”. I can see landscapes with sound and I can “feel” how the soundscape “looks”. Sometimes a song is flowy and has long shapes. Sometimes its dake or light depending on the somg of course

I beg to differ with the argument that synesthetes couldn't tell what it would feel like without synesthesia: to me, all motions trigger a sound-like experience. Best example is all the visual effects on smartphones, e.g. window opening effect, scrolling motion. These are all involuntarily associated with sounds. I can say that I would feel MUCH more rested if these weren't present all-the-time :)

I remember when I heard an 8d audio song and saw a beautiful sunset of pink, orange, yellow, purple and blue. I didn't realize this didn't just happen to everyone until I heard what synesthesia was

for me, maths is red bc it has lots of rules and most of the time there’s right answer (unlike other subjects). idk rud seems to fit that for me mad it was a shape it’d be a rectangle. science is green bc of nature and toxic waste bc yk. english is blue bc it’s very personal and very different from maths in the way it’s about what YOU think and not rules. again i just think blue fits that (it’d be a circle btw). and i think history is yellow bc it just FEELS yellow. like i think yellow suits the ancient vibe.

No one knows I see colours in numbers. No one I know would understand. No one ever finds it curious why all of my painting materials, clothes, etc. are aligned from white to grey in the same order because I see the colours in numerical order. It was a relief when I found out about synesthesia some years ago, that I wasn't crazy.

I see myself as colors, and it’s so many different fonts and shapes and colors and for so many different moods, but it’s like the coolest thing to have when u feel really confiedent. U see yourself looking so cool with colors in ur head, not normal people have that!

My mom and I have similar synesthesia: color for letters (but not numbers) and calendars as visuals. I remember what day of the week something happened or which month based on "where I was." Letters having colors is usually with isolated words like names, vocabulary to learn, but not in text.

King Krule is my favorite artist. His music brings out my synesthesia and I can see beautiful landscapes, his music is very loose and flowly and often doesnt use structure so I can see the dark depths of my mind

My wife told me once, when watching television and a specific actor appears on the screen 'He smells good'. While then, I assume it has something to do with some kind of reminiscence in the pheromonal sphere. Now I think it can be, at least partly, a synesthetic experience. What do you think about this. Since that time she died and we can not take part in some experiment. I remember a few other peculiar things about her perceptions and I can discuss some of them if required.

@@3nertia I can talk about a few more 'special' experiences here. We were together 21 years and very very close even compared to standard average couples. We were catalogued by our close relatives as 'fusional'. I think she realize some of her perception were not 'common' because I was there to listen and she had somebody to talk to. We are both multiprofessionnal, with a common field, biology. She often see things she wasn't able to describe to me to understand. Like, (1) in spring when aspen were borgeoning, from far away she can tell because she saw 'that special green in the mountain' where we were going. Or, (2) as she was trying to find a protocol to produce efficiently in vitro tomato propagation, she bugged on one step, unable to describe it. She then ask me to supervise a whole process to help describe what was happening. The spot where it bug was what she describe as a 'change in color right at the edge where cells will die if she was not cautious. Clearly, it wasn't a question of time but a question of a limit reach by the protection of the cells. A little more and the cells died, a little less an the next step wouldn't work. That was impossible for her, and me, to translate that moment with time because that time changed with each clump of cells in her petri dish. She told me again and again that she saw the difference in color. At the time I thought she had a visible spectrum larger than mine, Sharing that thought with her, she told me nobodu in the lab saw that change of 'color'. today I still think she had a larger visible spectrum. But... why not some kind of syntesthetic extension? (3) She got near the end a cancer that lead to ablation of olfactive bulb and whole cribriform plate andmuch more. So we assume no more olfaction. Thay was for me the time to make some taste experiment. Once she recognized the sweet and burnt taste of caramel. Sweet I can understand but not burnt only from the tongue. It is not suppose to be possible. May be, still, she had more there too... or elsewhere. (4) The only painting of her she was proud of is mostly in white shades. I want to point out that one to because, to her eyes, it was way more than what meet my eyes. (5) She was a fast learner about many things (weaving and most thread's related habilities, musical instrument mainly piano, languages...) and I want to emphasize here a little on the piano. She always found others weak or inefficient in picturing what the notes and melody were describing. That was the basis, as I am concern, to explain why she learn so fast and with 'little' practice new difficult pieces. As a synesthete that is easier to explain. (6) She had a keen eye for distance and proportion so incredibly useful when moving or going on sea kayaking expeditions. I understand and assume that all this is like a mess but I put it there as it came to me. Since then I learnt about tetrachromy and a few more things. She was probably blessed on 2 or 3 aspects in all this or may be mostly synesthete throughout more than 2 senses.

@@yvessioui2716 For first I gotta say that your wife was a very blessed person. And I'm short for words to describe the awe I am for everything she was capable of doing. I can only think of two things you could do to get some more answers now. on 2) you could try to recreate the experiment while filming it with UV cameras or IR cameras and check if there is some visible change in the footage at some point. Not only that would shine light over her capability but it could be a great way to work experiments in the lab. The procedure could easily be exploited with great benefits for you. A hinted gift from her for you to discover. On the other hand, though she is not here anymore, have you talked about these experiences to their family and relatives? If synesthesia or whatever her gift was is somewhat hereditary, maybe you still have chances of talking about these things in a deeper way. You are blessed by the times shared with her and I thank you sincerely for sharing these experiences here.

When I smell something I have a really strong description of it that very few people can understand. I don’t necessarily think this is synesthesia but it might be that my brain interprets smells differently than others.

Could you please give me an example of this?

I experienced this strongly during childhood, but by my late teens, it had diminished markedly. I "saw" colors for each day of the week, the months of the year, numbers 0 through 9 and related sets of numbers, and to a lesser extent, certain words. I also often experienced "exploding head syndrome", and I firmly believe there's a connection there.

I’ve never met someone that had the smell thing too! Certain memories and songs absolutely have taste or smell. Fools by the dodos tastes like chamomile. Lofi by JW francis smells like a freshly planted garden. Seth Rogen by Ditch days feels like a swaying ship (can’t drive to that one lol)

We've been trying to get help for my son who seems autistic or that word A we don't use, but his issues are tactile mostly. But. Wow!! All the time when he was little he described feelings as seeing red or yellow, or others, but mostly taked when he was meltdown. He, 2 years old, Mom, I don't know, I just could see red. 1st time. If I'd known.... this condution needs more exposure!!!!

Doesn’t everyone have this to an extent? Like you can definitely run a guitar through a pedal board and have someone sit and listen and they can probably give you a color of what distortion, delay and reverb, chorus, etc. look like to them. That’s normal in that sense I’d think.

It just clicked with me! In Fantasia they did the bursts of color and flow with sound in one part. Just like this guys example. So thats what some of you see. 😀 thats so cool.

I enjoy synaesthesia. It makes life just a bit richer. I would not like to lose it. I hope others can enjoy it as much, and that even those who don't have it will find it fun to hear about.

Funny, just as I read this, I got a Mars bar taste in my mouth.

I’m 66 & just last week found out by my psychiatrist that me seeing colors around people - aura- that I cared for deeply was synesthesia. Everyone always mentions music or writing so I’m unsure if I believe I have this, tho I enjoy it immensely. They had different colors, cobalt blue being most common around people I love most. I can smell a real Christmas tree for example SOMETIMES, not always but do smell things once in a while that I see a picture of. When I get REALLY HAPPY I see jewel tone cobalt blue -even though my eyes are wide open I can’t see anything but the color for a few seconds. Always found that strange because no one else I know did it,m but I loved it. I don’t feel pain of others, but have always been made fun of when even watching cartoons--if a coyote gets hit by an anvil it’s kinda like I hit my funny bone except all over-over --it feels like just a quick electric like response in which I always jump or flinch. Hearing someone tell a story in which someone gets hurt I do the same thing if they get graphic like when a shark bites someone. The colors you showed in the beginning are what I can see on an everyday basis. I have no idea what causes them, but they swirl like the colors on the surface of a bubble except much more vivid real coloration=s. The backdrop of the tv show “What’s My Line” is kinda like this is how I used to explain things. I don’t know if what I’m describing isn’t rue synesthesia-my psychiatrist doesn’t know everything & I can’t find anything online that confirms this. I’m bipolar & my mood stabilizer, Lamictal, has taken my colors away. I’m in the process of changing meds and hope to God I can get my colors back. I’d refused to take meds other drs had told me would take my colors away. Wadded u0 the prescriptions & threw them at them. But I was unaware lamictal would take them away & it did help my severe depression so I’ve kept taking it. I’d always thought the colors I saw were hallucinations, which I naturally have anyway-& still do on occasion, You mentioned autism, my grand nephew has this & I’ve noticed the toys he has that twirl & move are the d=same things I have in my home--wind spinners in every room, colored lights that move like northern lights (which are what I saw pre-lamictal except in VIVID, RICH colors. I now google “autism toys “ to find things I enjoy that move like kinetic sculptures etc. I’ve often wondered if autism is akin to bipolar for other reasons as well or maybe the kid has undiagnosed bipolar. I just know he’s like me in many ways yet I only see him once a year so he hasn’t learned anything from me. Maybe my dr is right & this is all synesthesia. Perhaps it’s not & im just weird. Either way I LOVE it & hope to get my colors back as soon as I’m weaned off lamictal. This was quite interesting. If you ever do a video of the kinds of things I do and see I’d like to be made aware of it, I’d like someone like you to confirm or deny my psychiatrists diagnosis, as I’ve found nothing like this to support her diagnosis of MY weird colors, smells & emotional colors, Don’t know if this is related, but I can lay down with nothing touching me, close my eyes & ride roller coasters etc. I can make them turn around and go the opposite way & I can feel them. I can willfully do this now, it happened once naturally and that is why I began doing it. I can feel other things as well just talking about it, but like I say maybe I’m simply crazy or weird, I’m an artist. I wonder if my strange colors make me more creative….. I’d like to ask, since I’ve read of people feeling the pain of others- I lived with my aunt the last 3 months when we found she was dying of pancreatic cancer. She often hurt in her bladder severely. “I” began to hurt in my bladder severely about a week before she died. I still do, I’ve been diagnosed with interstitial cystitis, but I’ve often wondered if I truly have the disease, or if my brain THINKS my bladder is truly hurting. It’s been over a decade & I still have it. Am I just crazy? Does the synesthesia type of feeling pain only happen for a moment (such as when I flinch when I see a cartoon character get hurt?) I ask this because I believe interstitial cystitis is a last resort title given to bladder pain they can’t figure out. I think I’m just crazy.

I have mild synethesia for music into color. Mozart is bright sunlight, Beethoven has silvers, blues and purples, and Brahms is gold, browns and reds. I love it!

For me it’s the opposite. When I look at colors, I hear sounds. So I paint and draw what I’d like to hear

Thanks for this vid 28 years I've kept quiet not knowing others see stuff too except to my mum. I can't forget any sounds I hear because of the images that go along with it if someone contradicts themselves it's like trying to shove 2 images together they break apart while joining as if looking through 2 images on 2 paper but with neither being the front or back.unpleasant to experience.pain is colours for me more overpowering and attention focusing than the actual sensation and although I don't see colours for other people I somehow FEEL peoples intentions aswell as see there colour cz ofvthese things I tend to avoid society as it can get quite an evil place knowing what people are going to do. My mum sees people's auras but that's it so thanks for making me feel less different.

One fun thing to do with a friend that has synesthesia or even just with yourself is pull up a random word generator and say the color(s) that comes to mind

What about things like when you're in deep thought about a problem and you hear or feel the problem. Or when an unexpected sound startles you and you see a visual pattern that helps you figure out what the sound was. But not a general state of it?

i remember when i was like eleven my cousin was obsessed with marina and the diamonds, and one day she just began explaining to me that marina had synesthesia. i had absolutely no idea what she meant until she numbered some of the types and as soon as she said "some can feel the taste of words" i was like "i mean, yeah, everyone can do that", she stopped and just finished the topic so i never got to learn the other types in which it performs until i was 15 and in biology class my teacher began talking about this topic, i never talked about this thing with anyone else bc to me... it happened to everyone so it had no reason to be brought up, obviously i later found out that tasting words and feeling colours wasn't quite normal nor common. im 19 now, and i dont really like talking about me having synesthesia bc almost everyone i know somehow finds a way to make it about themselves and say "i mean, to me baby blue is a weird colour too", "whats my colour", "how does my name taste like??" and just-- no, thats not it. anyway, im glad it has more people looking into it bc its quite interesting seeing people that have other types of synesthesia talk about their own personal experiences, or even those that have the same as mine, discuss how different their colours are from mines =]

when i found out marina had this. it changed the game for me. she’s already a genius in her song writing and then to have synthesia really makes sense and adds to it. especially her foot era! so colorful and aesthetically pleasing

For me, I can taste feelings, for example, metal is sour and rubber is soap. I can also smell feel and sometimes taste smell I have coloured letters months and days of the week.

this is so cool, since I was very little I always associated days of the week with different shapes with colors, for example "Wednesday" is a bright orange number 8, "Tuesday" is a round cloudy pale blue circle, and so on. This never goes away and it's not harmful, enjoy it.

Ive always thought synesthesia was just tied to music and here l am an artist years later realizing I attached color to a slew of things. While l cant see music, all I envision are shades, swatches and gradients when listening.

Very interesting what you said about people going blind and then "switching on the lights". I was at a concert in a completely dark space that was designed for the purpose of experiencing the world like a blind person does. A local band I was familiar with was playing, a good friend was by my side, but the experience was terrifying for me. I don`t want to go into much detail but I`ve always been looking for music that is purple to me. Jazz is yellow, classical tends to be pink and white and blue, grunge is green and brown and orange. If I find a purple song like that, it`s very rare and I`ll cherish listening to it for the rest of my life. But this complete darkness at the concert venue made me so anxious I started to see a different kind of purple during the songs, something lining all the chords and making me want to find a way out of this place urgently. Then after what seemed a neverending amount of time the lead singer announced on stage that they should probably stop playing because even if they told him before that this was going to be exhausting, he didn`t expect to see a scary purple glow hovering in the pitch darkness.

Interesting. I've always viewed jazz as purple, classical music as white, pop as hot pink and r n b as a warm chestnut brown, sometimes caramel or atleast these are the colours I assign the words with

@@urban_rose4096 yess definitely to all of these - jazz is also turquoise, raspberry, and indigo to me, but that has to do with the word itself and grapheme-synesthesia

i have multiple synesthesia, audio and visual.. i can hear light and and see waves or flow or something like that.. with low light condition i can see clearly the movement of air and waves and if i focus enough in normal light condition i can still see them too..

Of all the weird genetic things our body can do, I wish I had this. More than a rare eye or hair color or crazy athleticism or whatever. Seems like it just makes life a smidge more beautiful.

I'm autistic and I feel like I have a very light form of this. When I was a kid I associated food tastes with colors which confused my parents a lot. When I see a text for the first time I can in fact see different colors for a few seconds but they dull out in to the text default color, they can pop back in as I read though. I sometimes see some light persistence spots in my vision even though I didn't look at a light source for example. When I am in a crowded area I get VERY stressed out due to the share amount of sensorial stimuli. I can hear everyone's voice speaking in my ears and I can barely understand a single individual in a place like it. Class room is best when all is quite and just the professor talks. Otherwise I can barely stand being there.

ahh finally i find more videos talking about synesthesia! I connect colors to letters, words, numbers, sounds, objects and enviroment...i sometimes connect smell to enviroment too..i have it since teen age and i always thought that its just my fantasy until i saw a little mention of synesthesia in one documentary movie. I googled it up and i realizes that this is exactly how i connect colors too! And since then i finally knew why i connect colors to things.. although its not always.. in my face i see colors only when those things have some stronger meaning or it appears more often in short time around me. Sometimes i dont see any colors connected to anything and sometimes i do..its really random... Funn part is that i can speak two languages and for example i see different colors for the same word, jsut in different language... like... english word DOG.. i see it as brown... but in dog in czech language "PES", i see it as white/light grey...funny thing eh? But yes, i do have light autism and personality disorder, so that probably helped to synesthesia to grow in my mind

I was 30 years old before I realized that not everyone "sees" sound - any sound - but especially voices amd music - as part of hearing. I always wondered why i was so deeply moved by some pieces of music when others were not. I'm grateful for it, and would horribly miss that gift if i were suddenly deprived of it. 8:16

Different musical tones have colors to me. My family thought I was making things up when I would say that a song was orange or blue. I actually don’t like watching music videos because the colors don’t often match the music…

I've never experienced this in 'normal' reality, but I HAVE experienced this exact thing with strong hallucinogenics. This makes me think of "The Doors of Perception," which is what Jim Morrison spoke about. That's the reason he named the band The Doors.

I used to associate pitch strongly with letters colours and numbers, so when I learnt music, the system of CDEFGAB felt extremely confusing and frustrating for me, as each letter has their own unique colour. But now I've grown used to this system, my childhood association became very faint.

In recent years I've begun to be able to taste music and feel the heat of music. Pop music tends to be spicy, but doesn't produce much heat. Rock tends to taste earthy and is warm. Jazz is a bit bland but is cool. Metal tastes like vegetables and is very pleasantly warm.

The mention of the similarities between autism and synesthesia is really interesting to me and something I resonate with. I'm on the autism spectrum and I certainly experience something akin to synesthesia when my sensory overload spikes up - royal purple tastes like artificial grape fruit chews, light purple and baby blue taste like what I imagine shaving cream must taste like, and the normally-pleasant sound of a trumpet feels like jagged sawtooth against my skin. Sounds take the form of textures and I start being able to taste colors, and honestly I don't like it. I can't imagine actually having synesthesia and also being autistic.

hi there, I have both and I feel like my sensory issues are worsened by the synesthesia so I'm not happy with it. On the other hand I think I enjoy music more than others do. Lastly, I think I will lose my sanity if I were to lose my synesthesia (I know I can't). It's just such a big part of my daily experience I must go crazy were I to wake up without it one day.

I took 4 tabs the other day and went to a universe where all my senses were conjoining. It was awesome.

Numbers, words, letters, and sounds all have personalities and colors. Almost everything I see has a complex personality, sometimes so complex I can’t explain the personality. Also, sometimes, if I imagine eating, for example, a white gate, I taste it. White gates taste like zebra cakes. Garbage cans taste like sour candy. The Harry Potter movies taste like Luden’s cough drops. Is that synesthesia?

I have never heard of this until now. Very interesting. Makes a lot of sense.

I never knew I had synesthesia until I took acid. My parents thought there was something odd about me, chalked it up the being creative after the shrinks told them there wasn't anything wrong. It's possible I am also a high functioning autistic. At 70, it's hard to know... I take the tests and they indicate a high percentile (75-93) depending on if I'm taking the test from the perspective of the child I was or the adult that adapted. I suspect that psychedelics allow for the original connections of infants to reveal themselves... After that it's a matter or recognition that there is more than one way to experiences sounds and colors and other input. Part of how I adapted as an autistic was taking the coping lessons I learned from LSD and applying them to the day to day life. Eric Burden's voice is still the color, flavor and texture of a carrot. Paul McCartney is still coffee ice cream.

So I have synesthesia, and the with the word "Metals" You'd expect the color gray or silver to pop into my head, but instead green and blue do. This isn't because of the colors of the letters, but because of the periodic tables they had in my science class. One of them had the metals section highlighted blue and another one had then highlighted green. Then those colors just kinda took over the word metals. Has this kinda thing happened to anyone else?

ive never seen someone portray synesthesia as accurate as the animation in the beginning. Its crazy to see it on a screen like that considering i can only really see it in my head!

At last, someone knows about what I have had since very young. I have it mainly with regard to days of the week, ie. Monday is white Tuesday, brown, Wednesday, green, etc.

Thanks for pointing out how common this actually is. My sister and mom both have it. Last I remember, about 1 out of 100 have this.

Wow, visuals with the music is suuuuuper on point. (For me at least) I thought everyone has that when listening to music. (Or sounds)

i just found this out, this is amazing. I can see music, since i was a kid i loved classical music,cause it would make me see shapes and colors or images of people dancing (almost like some movie in my head). i would also hear trees or like nature to have a sound (like a song, and i would hear songs in my head when id go for a walk), even now i love to do that cause for example i see tree but i hear music as well. and when ppl talk to me or i say a story i see it as a movie in my head (i wokr in creative enviroment so its a huge plus for me), but recently i was learning for my bachelors exams and my classmate asked me how i learn and i told her "well i see the lecture like a movie in my head and i just rewind it" and she couldnt understand what i mean .. apparantly my classmates dont see their memories as movies in their head :D (i also do smell and can have all the feelings that go with the memory, like if im being right there). its a funny thing, i always thought its normal, until i started to discuss it with others, which led me here ...

I see shapes and colours moving around when I listen to music. I can also feel the music, I feel different emotions. Sometimes I sometimes just make up a whole movie in my mind that fits to the sounds, colours, smells and shapes of the song.

Feels like I am missing out :(. Great video though.

I see music with movement when i hear music i see lines, squiggly lines, a boulder shape, circles, bolded lines, triangles. Etc. I wish it was more.

My development was disrupted due to early trauma (including in the womb and outside of the womb) and I wonder if that’s perhaps why I’m a synesthetic. I see color in numbers and music, which is interesting for it to be those specific things since I study mathematics and music is one of my favorite things. I can easily do rather large arithmetic in my mind due to the colors of the numbers making it easier to keep track of my process.

Thanks for this clear description. I have chromesthesia which I use to my advantage as a musician and artist. This video is the sort of explanation I would share with friends or family to help them understand synaesthesia better.

I didn't realize not everyone experienced this! I am 40 years old and finally have a name for what I experience.

I think each brain makes its own connections, whatever seems obvious at first contact / learning, we just think we're normal. I for one smell Dèja Vu's, do a lot of math (especially geometry) with moving imagery, and there's something intense going on with music I can't really describe... It changes my personality and thinking, I know for some activities that I can't engage in them unless I go home and listen to something specific.
