There are still many steps that have to be taken, and problems solved, to get to practical fusion power. Many talk about getting to higher Q values, but even a Q value of 1000 would not matter if the reactor costs too much to build, or keeps having to be re-built because the plasma destroys the materials. If we get to reactors that work, at all, in the next 10 years, look to many, many more years before the technology matures to be both reliable and economical against other energy sources that exist now, and are expected to become ever lower cost in the next 20 years.

The big problem for nuclear fusion to become the power source of the future is rarely mentioned. This is the fact that the tritium needed for the operation of a fusion reactor has to be produced by the reactor itself. It is possible to breed tritium in a fusion reactor but producing enough of it will probably turn out to be impossible. The reason for this is that each fusion reactor produces one neutron that could in principle be use do create one tritium atom. But inevitable neutron losses and losses in extracting the tritium will cause the yield to be far less than hundred procent. The only hope to make the losses up is to utilize nuclear reactions that produce more neutrons than they consume. Nobody knows if this will be a solution to the problem.

There are so many things wrong in this video that it's difficult to know where to begin. Let's start with the central dogma. The original central dogma of Francis Crick was described like this. "The Central Dogma. This states that once "information" has passed into protein it cannot get out again. In more detail, the transfer of information from nucleic acid to nucleic acid, or from nucleic acid to protein may be possible, but transfer from protein to protein, or from protein to nucleic acid is impossible. Information here means the precise determination of sequence, either of bases in the nucleic acid or of amino acid residues in the protein." It simply says that information cannot flow from protein to nucleic acid. That's all it says. It says nothing about any other kinds of information. I don't know why Philip Ball wants to misrepresent it as something else, especially since he has been corrected on this topic in the past. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_dogma_of_molecular_biology

In spite of what Philip Ball says, intrinsically disordered regions of proteins have been known for decades and they are not restricted to eukaryotes. In fact, the lac repressor of E. coli contains an intrinsically disordered region in solution. It becomes ordered when it binds to DNA. Move along folks, nothing to see here.

  • @LaurenceAMoran

Philip Ball may not understand gene regulation in eukaryotes but those of us who understand it and write about it know that it is not fundamentally different than gene regulation in bacteria. I have no idea why Ball wants to call it "fuzzy" unless he's simply trying to say that mistakes are made from time to time as they are in bacteria.

    1. I wonder if a human study where poverty (limited access to food) does a child with leptin deficiency exists to see how the human body responds with decreased food intake. Furthermore, I wonder WHERE this Congenital leptin deficiency is more prevalent around the World? 2. There is a “risk” or “higher risk” but not a correlation to explain this obesity problem, but only for a population with a mutation. If the “risk” is there with “gene variations”, taking precaution and action to prevent the negative outcomes that may evolve is of critical importance. Encourage the positive effects of the genes to influence our behavior is good. As leaders, this is where we fail those we teach…if the body has a deficiency fix it with medicine, for example in Congenital leptin deficiency. There is a cause and effect, positive or negative in all matter of life. Research is one component that we discover this positive or negative effects in what’s happening in this World and how it functions. 3. “Hardwire tendencies to behave around food” let's take away the causation factor (food) and see what happens. 4. Single mutation vs variations in genes is fine information to know, but there is still a responsibility component to figuring out what is happening (influences based on genes/mutations) and not just doing nothing about it. Plus, that is why we need to tailor each treatment plan accordingly to each patient. Testing for Congenital leptin deficiency is of importance. 5. Obesity= assess each patient individually and hear their story, you will get an answer on why they are obese. In my experience, -sedentary lifestyles have created physical problems like knee problems- carrying too much weight, aches and pains and other disease processes then the cycle of defeat. It’s a dominos effect. You are what you eat or not eat… can sum it up most of the time. Knowledge is power when used to your benefit like in human behavior. Thanks.

What's needed is a more efficient way of producing muons, so we can have muon catalyst fusion, perhaps combined with Palladium electrode fusion. If the investment put into this was put into enhanced conductors, we would have had cheap clean energy by now! The statements about cheap energy around the corner is just propaganda, they need their grants, the research is fine, we're learning more about plasmas, but commercial energy, forget it. This is born out when they succeed in (sort of) obtaining more energy from laser fusion than they put in, but as all that energy is expended in eleven billionths of a second, there's no way of utilising it for the grid.

Great presentation and an encouraging perspective. It occurred to me however that wouldn't it be goodie the energy released could be converted directly to electrical energy without having to suffer the inefficiency of the heat/steam/rotational cycle. Is there any research in this direction (I'm imagining of some kind of plasma electric process analogous to the photoelectric effect) or is this too far fetched?

A fusion reactor i think will always be out competed by indirect fusion (solar power) but where fusion will really shine is as a mobile source of power that works anywhere without connecting to the grid and will be invaluable in space as both surface power on other planets and in fusion rockets and spacecraft powered by fusion for interstellar travel.

Excellent NIF lecture, but some comments: 1. The speaker talks about achieving Q=2, but this ignores the 500TW input to drive the lasers; 2. At 50.25 the diagram shows the four main parts of an IFE power plant - but where is the essential tritium breeding part??; 3. I’m told that the final laser lens will quickly be blackened by the fusion neutrons. Is this correct?

    1. Wealth inequality is totally fine as long as everyone as the individual liberty and basic means to go make their own money. 2. "Policing" is not racist. Police supposed to arrest criminals. If one race commits more crimes than others, then it's logical that they would be arrested more frequently. 3. The climate panic can be used as a tool by some to take more power for thenselves by using the excuse "climate emergency" to justify it, and most of the people will allow it because since a young age they've been inculcated with a sense of fear, moral outrage and indignation over a topic whats teaching has been twisted and convoluted by people who are either confused or malevolent or both The whole video I was impressed by this guy and thought he was pretty smart. 5 minutes before the end I realized he's not so smart after all 😅

If they can get that projectile and energy food that ignites then we could have a machine use fluidlike dynamics to predict the flow and maybe use multiple explosions in an order in dynamics and instead of cancel waves, build bigger energy waves. Like when you push a swing while it’s swinging to give it more energy or slow it down. A series of explosions detonated by projectile and then using the dynamics to carry the chain reaction or something. Magnetic fields can help guide and circulate the flow maybe.

My answer to the 'paradox of the organism' is as follows. Just as there is such a thing in nature as conservation of momentum, so there is such a thing as conservation of structure. The structure I have in mind is DNA. An organism is DNA's way of conserving itself.
