What Is Impostor Syndrome and How to Overcome It?
Have you ever doubted yourself and your achievements in your career or journey as a programmer? If so, then this video is for you. Today, I will discuss what impostor syndrome is and how you can overcome it. If you'd like to know more about this topic, please keep on watching!
This video is brought to you by The Learn Programming Academy's PHP for Beginners course:

My name is Tim Buchalka and I have put together a series of videos which I call the "Programming Tip of the Day". And basically, each video goes through talking about some of the pitfalls and things that you'll need to overcome to succeed as a programmer, things like overcoming frustration and keeping yourself motivated.
In this series I will also answer common questions about choosing a programming language to learn, questions about your career path and things of that nature. Now there's a lot of other things as well that I'll cover in these videos and I'm also opening the lines for you to tell me what you want me to cover.
Now I've been a programmer for over 35 years so I think I'm really qualified to answer a lot of these questions. So if you do have a question, pop the question in the comments section of this video and I'll do my best to address that in a future video.

I was a software engineer when I first graduated from college in 1985. I dropped out of the industry after having children. I have been a stay at home mom with a child with disabilities since. I recently purchased a course from Udemy for your Java masterclass. But I am having a great fear factor in starting it. I feel that my minor accomplishments back then just prove that I am not going to be successful now. Watching this video helped. I am going to get started on your Java class. I am very good at math and logic, and can learn new things. I might have to rewatch this video though :) Thank you for sharing!

Dear Cynthia..Always remember that you have faced & overcame real-life problems, which were more difficult than programming. There is no compiler in real life to warn you about errors. You are a fighter, and I firmly believe that you can learn & master the Java course. More power to you.

Absolutely this happens in all walks. My first IT job was the worst .. and there is an intellectual arrogance amongst those that know an area you don’t. I mean, I got the degrees but not the expertise if you know what I mean. Further, there are so many areas. The trick is to know an area and expand as much as you can and find your niche. The whole industry would be a whole lot better if we were able to reach out and ask without fear of the dreaded you don’t know response. Thanks for the video Tim. 👍👍

Hi Daniel, there are certain are people you will meet who do that. But I've found the number to be relatively low. It's ok in my opinion to answer a question with "I don't know". No one programmer knows everything!

The Learn Programming Channel yes very true Tim - I’ve found many team environments very competitive and because people are constantly vying for positions it’s considered a disadvantage if you don’t know something.. especially by some senior engineers. There can be an unfair judgment system in place. Having said that it’s not true for all working cultures/environments 👍

Great video Tim, thank you so much. Btw in future if you get time then please make a video about *Stack Overflow*- How to ask questions or look for answers there; having a good reputation on Stack Overflow is helpful to get better jobs or not and all. Really loving all these videos btw! *All the best wishes.*

I never suffered from this until I got my current job, then I found it was brutal. I would say the one thing that saved me was one of the more senior sysadmins pointing out the problem before it set in. In these cases one thing that is vitally important is to find someone supportive, such as a manager or a mentor, and talk about it. I tell all new hires on my team to be prepared for this because it is a real problem.

Thanks Tim, this is brilliant and needed. I’m working through the Java Masterclass and as much as I’m mostly coping well and progressing steadily, every now and again on a challenge I get a little stuck and ‘peek’ at the Q&A section to see parts of others solutions. At which point I get struck with a kind of guilt and much of what you’ve outlined in this video, I couldn’t possibly be any good or Ive hit my limit of understanding already and I’m ‘cheating’ by looking at someone else’s solution etc. Not to mention fear of moving on to the next lecture as my grasp of the one I’ve just done feels like it will slip away as soon as I do! So this is very reassuring to watch. Thanks.

Well, it's nice and kind. You really do seem like a kind of person that genuinely wants others to pursue their thing. I also hope, being Java Masterclass student, that your sense of humor was more visible. We get glimpses of it, and holding back is perfectly understandable, for obvious reasons, but for me, personally, it would not hurt to get more dry jokes :-)
