Mindset Mistakes That Will Sabotage Your Career in Programming and Cause You to Fail
Today, I'll talk about something that can potentially derail any career in general and potentially harm your journey in becoming a successful programmer. Certain ways of thinking about issues tend to stick in people's minds and people tend to focus on problems instead of their goals. So today, I'll also cite a few examples I've recently encountered when some of my students showed this kind of mindset. If you'd like to know more about it, please keep on watching.
Today's programming tip of the day is brought to you by The Learn Programming Academy's Machine Learning with Python from Scratch:
lpa.dev/KZreadML/y1
My name is Tim Buchalka and I have put together a series of videos which I call the "Programming Tip of the Day". And basically, each video goes through talking about some of the pitfalls and things that you'll need to overcome to succeed as a programmer, things like overcoming frustration and keeping yourself motivated.
In this series, I will also answer common questions about choosing a programming language to learn, questions about your career path and things of that nature. Now there's a lot of other things as well that I'll cover in these videos and I'm also opening the lines for you to tell me what you want me to cover.
Now I've been a programmer for over 35 years so I think I'm really qualified to answer a lot of these questions. So if you do have a question, pop the question in the comments section of this video and I'll do my best to address that in a future video.

I did not see the old content, I actually got your Java Masterclass coarse 3 days ago. But I already loved the introduction, the youtube links got me here. But my personal opinion. You took what people said, made it easier for me (the new guy) to understand and get into. Yeah sure the old guys might be used too the old stuff, but getting used too new things isreally something, actually, getting used to new things is a skill everyone needs today. Stay positive as much as possible, and think of things twice. There is always a solution to a problem, it just takes time, and mayber effort, but it's a solution non-the-less. Keep the hard work up Tim. Looking forward too you guiding me through this.

Late to the party here. I think it's awesome you've updated the content for FREE (take note newcomers to Tim's course, you can't get better than this!). Is the message on this video too harsh? To a degree yes, I'm hoping you reached out to the frustrated students directly who posted those comments to address their gripes. Those comments weren't just from frustrated students, but rather uhappy customers. I agree the rewards of longterm gains far outweighs the short term pain, but it is still pain. This video came across like you're devaluing their negative experience and literally told them to suck it up. You're a kick ass teacher Tim, and again super awesome for updating your content for free. It's been a couple of years since this video went up, hopefully you're more frequently aware that we're also customers (albeit sucking at the teat of your vast programming knowledge).

Hey Tim, i just wanted to say that i agree with you fully. Learning something (programming or not) is something that different people learn in different ways and in a different pace. For me personally the new content is a verry big positive, because i get to rewatch a video ot a topic that i've watched before, explained in a similar and or more effective way and that way i may think about something that i've haven't tought about when i've watched the older content. I am taking your Java masterclass currently and I think it's very good. I appreciate the time and effort you have gone through to improve the training. I am and have been a professional developer for many years, primarily using Microsoft technologies, and I want to broaden my horizons and career opportunities by learning Java. If some of your students are getting upset because their bookmarks are lost, why are they going to do in the crazy world of software development? Every day is a new challenge and some days are more frustrating than others. In my mind, I have walked away from my job many times! Changing priorities, production issues, not enough resources and too much work, ah, the joys of being a software engineer. Please keep doing what you are doing. I think you are helping many people on their path.

Really well said. It's not whether they're right or wrong in absolute terms. It's --- as you said --- what parts of what's true they're focusing on. If they had expressed immense appreciation for the new updated course material, and also mentioned briefly that they were slightly dissapointed in having lost their bookmarks but no big deal, it was a good opportunity for them to review the material, then THAT would be most representative of the full truth.

There are three basic concepts to programming: Iteration (for, while, foreach) --> Conditional (if, logical) and sequence (data structures, classes, arrays, vectors, lits, heaps, stacks..etc) If you struggle with what a class is, or what an object is, or what a loop does...don't give up, keep doing it, it will eventually sink in.

People who have already paid would most often than not prefer free updates than a shiny new paid version of a course. From your point of view, it is also better to keep improving a content that has already good reviews (and making it more visible) than publishing new content that you'll have to build its visibility with time. Of course, there will be a point where you won't be making good money from your old content, so this will probably be the moment when you'll have to switch to a brand new course. I appreciate your insights and honesty and I look forward to complete all your Java courses.

Fair points. You should not be dependant on notes, tabs etc. If you need to use the specific notes you made rather than general information you can quickly look up with Google, then I figure you haven't grasped the concept yet you are trying to learn. That is what I have experienced myself.

These will fade away soon enough as people realize they should watch all the new videos to gain competitive advantage. I learned to program in 1980 and have been doing it for a living since 1985. Although it does sound harsh, Tim is absolutely right. He's not just teaching you how to program, but trying to lay the foundations for you to become a successful professional programmer. Every seasoned programmer will know this scenario: it's late at night, you're tired, you're up against a deadline, and you've hit a problem. It might be a bug, a design fault, a problem with data or a dozen other things, but you're the one who has to figure it out. You need to be like a detective, looking through every nook and cranny, digging through code, trying things, testing, experimenting, researching... You'll need to be curious and tenacious. If you are, you'll discover the problem, fix it and save the day. While you're doing that you'll be learning valuable analysis and debugging skills. So come on guys, don't give up at the first hurdle. This is how you earn your stripes. Being a programmer also means keeping up with technology. Many of the languages and devices I've used over the years are now museum pieces and I've had to constantly learn new skills to keep up. It can be a pain in the arse, but it keeps your skills sharp. You'll get no bigger kick than when you see people using software that you've designed, programmed and built yourself. I've got no connection with Tim, other than having bought his course. Java is one of those languages I've never learned until now. I've looked at a number of courses on Java and this is certainly the best I could find. Stick with it people. Programming is a fantastic career and a helluva lot of fun. I look forward to being blown away with the amazing stuff some of you will write in the future.

It just occurred to me how much the practice of law is like software programming. Both are evolving rule-based systems. Some rules evolve slowly while others evolve much faster. The different areas of practice are analogous to different programming languages. The different jurisdictions and courts have their own administrative rules just as different companies have their own best practices/conventions. I practiced law for close to twenty years. I can learn to program.

This pitch for student (client) adaptability would be more effective it it weren't framed within a teacher's (vendor's) defense against criticism, however ill-deserved. What we all want to do when criticized: trivialize any suffering and shift blame to critics. It’s satisfying but counterproductive when the critics are clients, particularly when done publicly. It slams the door on those who brought their complaints (valid to them however silly to others), and prospective clients might worry that their concerns would be brushed off or used as a public example of what not to do.

I want to ask if you are completely remaking the course i.e. are you changing the challenges or they will be similar? Thank you, have a nice day. I am your student in two of your courses Java Master Class and Android with Java

As a 50 something, I learned the old way: big, boring book. Tim does an excellent job and I'm having a good time in his courses.

Students ( me included) need to remember why you took a course anyway. Most are taking a course to deal with change or just to make a change. The internet is not a place to try to hide from change!

I am doing that Java masterclass and i noticed the new content, it's like most of the basics with new stuff, he is complaining about bookmarks from 5 minute videos? Because if so then he is really focusing on the wrong things

To be a good programmer you actually have to always learn and re-learn, it's not like you've learned some programming language and can use it without changes till end of life. In IT things change fast and without learning new stuff you'd find yourself left behind soon. So, complaining about FREE COURSE REMASTER is ridiculous!

I like your philosophy, Tim. In my opinion, people need to put on their big boy/girl pants and quit their complaining. In the workforce, they are going to have to suck it up buttercup.

Well, Tim is ok. I have one of his Python master classes...it's long and it kinda goes into weird directions. Meaning there is no domain. there is no real focus as to what we are trying to do here. Just showing code with willie nile examples does not really help. I am actually getting really good at programming, why? I do it 18 hours a day, so I can go pro. So Tim's courses can't hurt, but they are not that great. But for $10 bucks on a Udemy sale who cares. Get as many as you can. Either way, there is no magical solution to becoming a programmer. YOU HAVE TO IT ALL THE TIME ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT. That is the truth. Unless you're a genius, have an IQ of 200 or whatever. So yeah don't complain if you don't like the course. I have bought many courses that sucked on Udemy. There is a hidden gem in there somewhere. And I have bought some courses that just royally sucked. Either way, if you want to be a programmer, you have to do it everyday all the time. Think about a project you want to make, if you don't you will never make any money doing this, no job, no gigs. You need a portfolio. One of the best Python courses I have taken is: "Mastering FinTech and Machine Learning" It is over a 100 hours and the teacher, Nimi or something like that, it is badass. I think he is from Norway. I got it for $14 bucks. Best Python course you can get. Anyway, if you want to be a programmer, YOU have to be dedicated as possible. And disciplined. I am getting really good at this, and FinTech (Financial programming) with Machine Learning is BIG BUCKS if you can make it. Yeah you will need to know some math, but the frameworks take care of everything.

So what they are saying is they have already gone through the old course? And it’s been updated? Well what’s the problem? They already did those sections? Once you do the course it’s for reference.. and once you learn all the concepts usually you just need to look up certain items right? I don’t see the problem. If the problem is updating material then holy lord they need to read the first edition of the oxford dictionary and see how that has changed. Quite funny 😆😆

“I paid $10 and you improved what I paid for. I want my money back!!!” 🤣 But in seriousness, if someone actually wants to use this course as a foundation to learn Java and become a professional SDE with that knowledge, you better be planning to review the course twice, anyway. At least. You’re competing with CS students who took 3-4 different full semester courses in Java. It’s not “I took Tim’s Java class once, now I’m a qualified Java programmer”...that’s entirely unreasonable.
