How to Make Your Resume Stand Out From the Rest
Did you know there's a lot of factors and things that you'll need to overcome to become a programmer that aren't specifically related to coding?
My name is Tim Buchalka and I have put together a series of videos which I call the "Programming Tip of the Day". And basically, each video goes through talking about some of the pitfalls and things that you'll need to overcome to succeed as a programmer, things like overcoming frustration and keeping yourself motivated.
In this series I will also answer common questions about choosing a programming language to learn, questions about your career path and things of that nature. Now there's a lot of other things as well that I'll cover in these videos and I'm also opening the lines for you to tell me what you want me to cover.
Now I've been a programmer for over 35 years so I think I'm real qualified to answer a lot of these questions. So if you do have a question, pop the question in the comments section of this video and I'll do my best to address that in a future video.

Great topic! I am changing careers and have 16 years of experience as a Graphic Designer so in an effort to be concise, should I just summarize it to "2001-2016 worked as a graphic designer and relate any applicable skills like email design & HTML? Then focus on the education and skills section mostly?

Tim, one question here. What should be added in Resume if one is skilled in several aspects of JAVA like core JAVA, JAVA FX , JDBC, data structures and algorithm, design patterns etc. Should they be listed separately under 'SKILL SET' or should it just be Java? elaborate on this please?

Hello Tim. First and foremost, a big thanks for putting so much effort in creating all of the content which helps all of us in our programming journey. I have a question about the content I should put in my programmer CV. You did mention that we should be concise and stick to what the company needs. However, for the last decade, my profession has mostly revolved around 3D design, graphic design and digital art, and in the last 1-2 years I've been slowly making transition towards a programming profession. Since I'm in my mid-thirties now, when putting together a CV for a developer position, after highlighting skills which are essential for the recruiter, should I mention what was my profession prior to programming in the last few lines of my resume, or should I leave that out completely? Thank you in advance.

Yes putting details about relevant things for the employer is important. I think in this case it would be wise to mention what you did prior to programming. Otherwise, there will a big gap in your resume to explain. And you never know those 3D skills may open up an opportunity in programming!

Thank you for your answer Tim. It cleared a dilemma I had about structuring my developer CV. I hope that 3D skills will be of some use in my programming future :-) All the best!

Hi, can you give more tips about a good resume? What keywords should be used in a programmer resume? How a technology-based resume is structured

I'll see if I can do a video about this in the future. But I did make some points in the video about structure - focus on what the employer wants to see - imagine yourself as the employer. Do you think they would want to know if you have cats, or like gardening? Most likely not, they want to know about your skills and whether you will fit in with their team of employees - If you keep thinking about this from the employer point of view it will help the content and structure of your resume.

Good afternoon. At the moment I am following the udemy java masterclass course and in the near future I wish to work as a software development. I want to create a few programs and add them to the resume. Would that be a good idea? And if yes, can you recommend some project ideas or would it be good idea to add the solution from the course challenges?

Hi could you tell me whether having a picture of yourself on your resume is a good idea?

In general I'd say it probably doesn't offer any significant advantage. Think of it from the employers point of view. What (if anything) is gained by them looking at your photo? It may achieve a goal of making your resume stand out of the crowd a bit, but I personally wouldn't do it. Instead, I'd focus on making the other parts of the resume appeal to the employer.

How do you stay motivated to keep learning to program?

You don't. Build up a solid base of habits and you won't need any motivation to move.

Habits is important, but if you hate what you are doing its going to be mighty hard to stay motivated. Keep the end goal in mind, and try and make the journey fun - celebrate the wins - for example if you successfully complete a challenge, or finally understand a key concept, congratulate yourself. Keep thinking about why you are doing what you are doing (getting a full time job, earning money, etc). I can see how having a partner who is also a programmer would be motivating as well!! :)
