Is It Possible to Focus on Two Areas of Software Development? Programming Tip by Tim Buchalka
Did you know there's a lot of factors and things that you'll need to overcome to become a programmer that aren't specifically related to coding?
My name is Tim Buchalka and I have put together a series of videos which I call the "Programming Tip of the Day". And basically, each video goes through talking about some of the pitfalls and things that you'll need to overcome to succeed as a programmer, things like overcoming frustration and keeping yourself motivated.
In this series I will also answer common questions about choosing a programming language to learn, questions about your career path and things of that nature. Now there's a lot of other things as well that I'll cover in these videos and I'm also opening the lines for you to tell me what you want me to cover.
Now I've been a programmer for over 35 years so I think I'm real qualified to answer a lot of these questions. So if you do have a question, pop the question in the comments section of this video and I'll do my best to address that in a future video.

I would say if you are just starting out, focus on one area and get really good at it. Then you can pick up skills that will help you expand your area of expertise. I first learned some programming, and then computer repair, before learning networking, and then servers and back end development. Over the course of 15 years, I got quite good at fixing Windows issues, before I got tired of fixing virus problems all the time, and moved more into servers on Linux and OSX. Currently, I setup and maintain Linux servers on VPS providers like Digital Ocean and Linode, and I do back end development with PHP, MySQL, and integration with the front end via JavaScript and CSS. I still do some network and Windows stuff occasionally, but I much prefer to do the server and back end development. Find something you think you will enjoy doing and get good at it, and along the way, watch for something else you may enjoy, sample the things that peak your interest.

I think the great thing about learning programming skills is that you can transfer that knowledge and experience to different industries and sectors much more easily than almost any other skills set.
