I flat out love closer to truth, this interviewer is the best on you tube, his mind and way of thinking is so enjoyable and it is fun to follow and go along on his intellectual journey, as to this question of God and his being, I think that journey will consume and delight us in eternity. To see the life, that depends on nothing else outside of itself. To see the ground of all of reality, my goodness to see the creator of time itself is just awe inspiring and exhilarating.

@@billnorris1264 “Hard core scientific materialism” No offence intended but technically there’s no such thing as “hard core (scientific) materialism” as it’s not “scientific” in the sense of methodological naturalism!! Materialism is actually a philosophical position not a scientific position. It just sounds better if you arbitrarily add “scientific” to give this quasi religion more credibility. There’s a big difference between methodological naturalism and philosophical naturalism!! I’m not making any appeals to authority but the fact is that according to the expert linguist and brilliant cognitive scientist Noam Chomsky… “There are only two ways of looking at eliminative materialism (the idea that all things reduce to solid substance). One is that it is total gibberish until someone tells us what matter is. Until someone tells us what eliminative materialism is there can’t be such a thing as eliminative materialism and no one can tell us what matter is”. (Noam Chomsky). The double irony is that quantum mechanics and in particular quantum superposition has actually demonstrated that classical materialism is dead!! According to Scientific American… “Atoms themselves can be further divided into smaller bits, and those into yet smaller ones, and so on, until what is left lacks shape and solidity altogether. At the bottom of the chain of “physical” reduction there are only elusive, phantasmal entities we label as “energy” and “fields”-abstract conceptual tools for describing nature, which themselves seem to lack any real, concrete essence.” (Scientific American). The fact is that most of our physical theories and metaphors to describe the world of “matter” have been progressively falsified and replaced by what appears to be immaterial probability waves that are invisible, bi locational/non locational, timeless, unmeasurable and collapse at the wave function during measurement due to the observer effect suggesting that consciousness not “matter” is fundamental to reality in some way. According to the Director of the Institute for Mind and Consciousness Professor David Chalmers the current evidence suggests that we should think of mind and consciousness as an…. “Updated version of Descartes. The body effects the mind the mind effects the body. Integrated information theory tells us how physics effects consciousness and collapse tells us how consciousness effects physics.” Chalmers goes on to highlight the limitations of this self refuting, strictly reductive, causally closed, effectively complete, nihilistic, fatalistic b…sht… “Materialism is a beautiful and compelling view of the world, but to account for consciousness, we have to go beyond the resources it provides” (David Chalmers) Noam Chomsky is in agreement with Schopenhauer as Schopenhauer points out that since there is no viable definition of “matter” the strictly reductive materialist, atheist or philosophical naturalist simply posits “matter” as an absolute given rather than even attempt to justify his near worship of “matter” as the generator and genesis of all things. Peace. Equally, I’m not making any appeals to authority, but on the cognitive level Albert Einstein utilised a more nuanced approach and demonstrated that “matter” is nothing more substantive than the curvature of space and time which is why he completely rejected atheism for the belief in the fundamental nature of mind and consciousness. That is Einstein completely rejected atheism for the nuanced God of Spinoza/deism/panentheism. Similarly, Einstein’s closest friend Michelle Besso, who Einstein stated “was the greatest sounding board in Europe”, completely rejected atheism for the belief in the fundamental nature of mind and consciousness/monotheism (Christianity). I’m not making any appeals to authority just pointing out that the conflict myth between science and faith is exactly that, a myth and a false dichotomy perpetuated by militant internet atheists. Again I’m not making any appeals to authority but according to the literary genius G.K. Chesterton… “The Christian admits that the universe is manifold and even miscellaneous, just as a sane man knows that he is complex. The sane man knows that he has a touch of the beast, a touch of the devil, a touch of the saint, a touch of the citizen. The really sane man knows that he has a touch of the madman. But the materialist's world is quite simple and solid, just as the madman is quite sure he is sane. The materialist is sure that history has been simply and solely a chain of causation, just as the interesting person before mentioned is quite sure that he is simply and solely a chicken. Materialists and madmen never have doubts.” (G.K. Chesterton). Peace. ❤

I have speculated recently about how God thinks. Does he construct his thoughts in word/language form? In what form does he know his/her intentionality?
The question sounds like 'when I look at myself in the mirror, is there another image inside my image?' You are asking questions about yourself from somebody else, doesn't give you the true answers you are looking for. The answer is if you know yourself, you will find God too. Then you can talk to Him and ask your questions about Him, from Him directly. You can ask me about my brother, but it is best to talk to him directly - that is if you are really interested about him.

To answer RLK's question "How unfathomable complexity could emerge from utter simplicity?", think how the simple binary (0/1) can make up an infinite number of programs and datasets, thus rendering infinite complexity as outputs of computation. In fact, binary is the common denominator of all religions, expressed as Nirguna Brahman/Saguna Brahman in Hindu tradition, Darkness/Light in Abrahamic tradition, Sunyata/Svabhava in Buddhist tradition and Yin/Yang in Taoist tradition......

Thank you for this video Robert. When we try conceptualize God, we are limited by our own mind, which is mentioned briefly in this video. Ultimately, God is beyond our conceptualizations: “Exalted, immeasurably exalted, art Thou above the strivings of mortal man to unravel Thy mystery, to describe Thy glory, or even to hint at the nature of Thine Essence. For whatever such strivings may accomplish, they never can hope to transcend the limitations imposed upon Thy creatures...” Baha’u’llah. That said, we can conceptualize characteristics such as All-Knowing, All-Wise, the Compassionate, and so on. Perhaps that is as far as the human mind can go.

Feelings generate abstract. Logic repeats what is. Feelings lead to both good and evil. Self sacrifice, constant thoughtful of others, to stealing, and sexual assault. Logic is that part that allows people to consider which way to turn. To put it spiritually, the universe is like a human egg. It begins as a small point, something happens and it begins to expan. Both the egg and universe divide as they expand. Breaking up into parts, breaking up into new qualities, new possibilities. Ever more complex....but always the egg, always the universe. This means all that you are, feelings, knowledge, physical, and wave, are all equal. If you are Christian you know the story of Adam and eve, I want you to think about this. Before they ate the apple, god said it was perfect. Being naked was fine, eating anything else was fine. All words and all actions were fine. So why would god tell beings, that he knew perfectly well, to not do something. It wasn't actually fruit you see. It was an idea. The snake gave eve a taste of something "better" which meant now there was something worse. The mind is a pattern finder, and once it sees the pattern it can never unsee it. Good and evil were not directly created, only the potential. God didn't ask them not to eat fruit. He asked them not to judge his creation.
God is everything and everything is God. Omnipotent. Omniscience. Omnipresent. Beyond time, space and causation. The Alpha and Omega. Unity. Oneness. Infinite. Vast. Absolute. Beyond that who can know?
I think this god imagining began sometime after Homer, aristolian platonic. Progressing through many paths Kabbalist, Christian, Hindu and the Egyptian mysteries, being refined by neo-platonic thoughts which influenced other understandings. Homer would be astonished for him our Creator was Alien.
A perfect God who is changing, is a paradox. An omnipotent God who cannot change, is not omnipotent. But if he can, he wasn't perfect to begin with.

I want to be clear that it’s ok to have faith. My view is just the observation of recorded history to the current knowledge. I have to admit those are interesting point of views which are, in my opinion based on imperfect information. Again in my opinion, the technology of the human mind evolved to the point of which it became more advanced than consciousness’s ability to be responsible with perceive perception of sensory input/emotions and the environment properly and how that can be misconstrued in the imagination as a truth. Have we not taken the seriousness of the fact that we have always been born with the disadvantage of experience and knowledge.

According to the prophets, God is an abstract being having four independent attributes of love, justice, wisdom, and raw power in descending order of priority. Different prioritizations result in a total of 24 "personality types".
I feel sympathies for Mr. Kuhn, only when a person absorb entire dimension of divine presence in holistic totality he can realize how hopeless human condition really is. Idea of something like God is so absurd and detached from reality that it became somehow natural to think about it. We feel connected, like we're all in the same boat, staring together at beacons of light in the distance, not sure if we should rejoice or jump in the water immediately, swimming away from the human boat as far as we can. Maybe is better to find some rock and gaze at star light night alone instead.
Well, why beat around the bush? God is the Ability and the Will for Everything to be and The One Consciousness eternally enjoying all creation. It's therefore an oxymoron to speak of "His _own_ being" - it implies limitations...

It's not to be described. You have to experience it.
robert, Anthropomorphism is all we can do. we can only think like we can think. god would not expect anything else of us. i think it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that our brains could understand what sort of being god actually is, in terms of his own nature. so if god has a desire for us to get to know him, then it is by attributing things that we do know, to him. in other words, anthropomorphism.
Robert needs to explore what it means for God to "change". God can change His mind without changing His being or personality. Why? Because all things in His creation are both fluid and temporally locked. He can do something that gets positive results, but then let it run independently, and afterward it gets wayward and therefore change His mind on how to deal with it; that is, to change His relationship to that object, especially where that object is a human being that has free will to act for good or for bad. God therefore has prerogative to act differently toward that person from one day to the next without it necessarily changing who He is. In that sense, God does not change. He does not become better or worse from moment to momemt, but He is eternally consistent in who He is and His mode of thinking and decision-making. It is just like a person can be happy one moment and angry the next without being inconsistent or changing who they are. But while humans grow and learn, leading to them evolving their personalities, God does not do so because he already has perfect knowledge and wisdom. But this does not mean He is inflexible and unmoving. A person can be both consistent and flexible, but only to a defined point. He is flexible in that He is willing to make consessions for requests that are not against His consistency. He can also change from one mode of operation to another depending on times and seasons based upon how He has planned things to play out. For example, to accomplish salvation, it must have phases, and how God acts and what actions He accepts must necessarily change in each phase according to mankind's level of knowledge regarding His plan of salvation and the phase they are in. When Adam sinned, it was not God who changed, but Adam who changed. God merely adjusted how He dealt with the changing circumstance. You can say He changed his mind about how he would deal with Adam and his offspring, but it does not mean that God Himself changed. 1) Before the Law, humankind was without law. 2) After the Law, sin was made manifest. 3) Christ came and abolished the condemnation of the law in order to 4) lead us into a relationship with God, 5) after which God will perfect us again 6) so that we may regain what Adam lost for us. These are all phases of God's plan for us, and He deals with us according to the phase we are in. He has not changed, but the phase has changed and He has adjusted his interactions with us to compensate. If He were inflexible, it would be impossible to accomplish any sort of plan in dealing with beings having free will without causing pain to them in exactly the same was as dealing with an inflexible person with impossibly high standards and expectations about every single action. Right now it so happens that God must refrain from showy displays of His power in order to disprove the claim that His servants serve Him only because of what He provides for them or because they can see His fearful power active in profound ways and thus merely serve Him out of selfish desires or fears. That is important because He wants mankind to serve Him of their own free will. But He has set a limit and will eventually act to free His servants from the sin of lovelessness and its consequences, which will require destroying all who do not serve Him. But in the meantime He gives them freedom to act and even to prove that their way is better. Which, of course, it is not. He created mankind with free will, but also, being omniscient and our Creator, He knows what is best for us, and therefore our service to Him is the only way we can have and put into practice that knowledge which only He can provide.

“ what’s it like to be god?” Isn’t that like asking an amoeba what it’s like to be God? It’s no different , we are closer to the amoeba than can be differentiated in the question.
God is the Divine Being, which means mighty and strong existing one. He is also the conscious living supernatural or transcendent force of energy. God created man in his image and likeness that is displayed in and by man. Many things are set in motion but God also interacts with his creations. God is comprised of parts. The human form is a physical likeness of God's spirit or spiritual form. His spirit form also has inner parts just as he created humans to have. Yet, God's parts are of superior and transcendent forces and energy, beyond that of physics.
God is a Spirit if anybody disagree existence of the Spirit then they can take mind or conciousness. Thus, God can remove the Spirit from the brain of someone that's passed on from Parenrs, and instead, God's Spirit can be replaced back into the brain in a fraction of time. Thus, turning such a person to be the Temple of God & no oower can destroy such a person even by bullets, and that's testable and verifiable but this's only possible in Judea Christianity, and the world is going to be climaxed through such SOME.
A creature of duality is not commensurate with being at One with the Singularity. The ego must be set aside to enable attunement.
What does God feel when a lion hunts down a poor deer and mercilessly kills and eats it.If I see this scene on TV, tears will roll down my cheeks and I deeply feel remorseful and I start cursing him and I fervently ask God, why he does all this.

So you would prefer a lion to go against its very nature and starve to death?
Outstanding discussion!
4:58 -5:02. "you could have a being, for example, who was omniscient, but not all-powerful." The statement is a patent contradiction in terms, as being omniscient includes the knowledge of how to be omnipotent. In other words, an omniscient being who does not know how to be omnipotent is not an omniscient being. Omniscience, it seems, is ontologically prior to omnipotence. Conversely, bein omnipotent logically entails being omniscient. This is the philosophy of religion 101. At least as I teach it.

I am not sure I understand how Knowing must lead to Being. As a physical trainer, knowing how to train someone so they can lift 300 lbs does allow me to teach someone to be able to do it; but train as I might, I won't be able to come close to lifting that much weight due to my own physical limitations. As a side note, Hindu folklore for instance is replete with sages who achieve omniscience but will have to deal with the burden (and the frustration) since they will not be able to change one thing about the outcome.

@@seankrishnan6402 As the saying goes, all analogies limp. Your analogy of a weightlifter is flawed because it deals with limited knowledge. Consider this, X knows everything. 'Everything' is an unrestricted quantifier which means X knows how to do and be anything. Omniscience logically entails omnipotence but not wise versa. Omnipotence implies omnisiicnce. Back to your analogy, limping as it is. If one truly knows how to lift 300 lbs, one can lift the weight with ease, even if one has a body of a child or, for that matter no body at all. Knowing-how-to logically implies the ability how to. The key concept here is true knowledge which by definition cannot be false; if X knows that P, then P is true. A for the second point of an omniscient mind helpless in the face of absolute determinism, it is altogether a different story.
8:09 If God is all powerful, all knowing and all good, the how can he possibly allow the Devil to exist?

As God is all knowing, then God knows why He allows this.

Not sure you made a point here. People believe in everything. From god to devil worship. From self sacrifice to molestation of children. People are easily fooled....
I know who not to listen to when the subject is God; the people who make a living from that.

7:10. 'God, Creator of the universe.' You hear that all the time. You know what you never hear, God Creator of nature. It seems to me to create the universe is to create nature. What is nature? What is the natural of nature?
You have Free Will. If you have Free Will, everything has Free Will. If everything has Free Will, everything has Consciousness. Individual elementary particles of your body have Consciousness. There is a Collective Consciousness of your body. Similarly, there is a Collective Consciousness of the Universe. Ultimately, there is One Whole. That is the Real God. We got confused between Masters and God. You ask these questions because you want to know yourself.

So incredibly shocking that someone as logical as Swinburne can be so illogical. God cannot be a being or a person since they are by definition created and limited. God must be ground of being, not a being.
The God of the christian bible calls for your faith. For there to be true faith there can be no conclusive evidence. What we are left with is our own experience with God. I cannot convince you of God's existence from my experience, I can only tell you what I know based on that experience, so that you may have your own experience with God. Your experience with God will be directly related to your willingness to let go of your need to have control over your life and faith. The secret of who God is, is found in the bible book of John, 1st chapter, Verse 18: "No one has seen God at any time". This is because if you take away every created thing: spiritual, physical, time, space all that is left is the unseen God! And so you "no god" people understand, my faith dose not depend on your opinion.

the god of the bible is a leader, a king. just what was needed to herd people like sheep. it's so obvious, just look around.
Mathematics shares many similarities with the concept of God: it is immaterial, it is eternal, it is pure truth, it is universal. The main difference is that mathematics has no love, no purpose, no intentionality, whereas God has commandments. Another significant difference is that mathematics is incomplete while God is perfect. Being perfect means that God is complete, nothing is missing. Incompleteness implies something missing, which carries with it the notion of a journey hoping for a destination. A perfect God is the destination itself; no journey is necessary; people are not necessary. Mathematics and humankind have a beautiful relationship, a journey of creation where math reveals its structure to intelligence, and all is recorded in mathematical journals to be shared with other intelligences to continue growing in the field of intelligence first in school curriculum of public education and later in technological products demanded by the public. Religion and humankind do not have such a relationship.

The virus has little to do with God. It's a virus. It happens. Mortality is just a tiny blip to God. A Virus isn't good or bad. It's just a virus. It's like gravity. Gravity isn't good or bad. It's just a thing. Sometimes we fall down and hurt ourselves because of gravity. That doesn't make gravity bad and it doesn't make God bad. Sometimes a virus jumps species and makes people sick. That doesn't make the virus bad and it doesn't make God bad. It's just part of life. What matters is how we deal with it! We can choose to work together and help each other out and become better and stronger, or we can complain and take advantage of each other and choose to do evil. It's not the things that happen that matter, it's how we deal with them that matters. Mortality is all about improving ourselves. It's hard! But usually when things are hardest, is when we improve the most if we try! It's not what life throws at us that matters, it's how we deal with it that matters.
Theologans' ideas of God are all very interesting; but they seem to have nothing to do with the biblical God. So where does that leave the Bible?
If God has always been , then what was he doing long before he created the universe , say we are correct and the universe is 13.7 billion years old , then what was God doing in all the preceding billions of years ?
