What is Gene Mapping?

explorebiology.org/summary/genetics/plant-genetics-and-the-future-of-food
This video describes the discoveries of Thomas Hunt Morgan and Alfred Sturtevant on gene recombination, or crossing-over, which revolutionized genetics and allowed the mapping of gene position along a chromosome (gene mapping). Studying traits in the fruit fly Drosophila in the early 20th century, these scientists discovered that genes on the same chromosome are linked, meaning that they are usually inherited together. However, occasionally gene became unlinked when maternal and paternal chromosomes exchange pieces of DNA during meiosis. The farther apart the genes are on a chromosome, the more likely an exchange (a cross-over) can occur between them, hence providing the basis for mapping distances between genes. For more information on gene mapping, see Pamela Ronald's Narrative on Plant Genetics in The Explorer’s Guide to Biology (explorebiology.org/summary/genetics/plant-genetics-and-the-future-of-food).

The really fun stuff is when you randomly get a gene recombination that drops off a portion of a chromosome immediately after a fertilized embryo divides the first few times. Apparently this is what happens with a small portion of births where the child is physically/mentally hampered by a bizarre condition/syndrome. My youngest son was born with Kleefstra Syndrome (a portion of one chromosome becomes damaged or absent early in cellular division) and is severely mentally disabled and physically limited in fine motor control. About 1 in every 200,000 births lead to this. It's not a huge number of people, but it's entirely plausible for any pregnancy to have this condition. It's fascinating to see the difference that one tiny spot, on one side of a single chromosome, can actually have.
