Hi Connie. Thanks for your help. Here's my FAN club story: Over time, I had tried to find Carl Beyer and family in the 1920 US Census without success although I found them in both the 1910 and 1930 US Censuses. I finally realized they were at the same address in Chicago in both of these censuses (3635 S Winchester and 3635 Winchester Ave). I had recently seen KZread videos by Christa Cowan of Ancestry.com and you in which you talked about using the “FAN club” to solve research problems. While chatting with my Mom and relating what I knew and didn’t know, the FAN club clicked for me. I went to the images for the 1910 and 1930 censuses and looked for neighbors who appeared on both. I found three - Adeline Perlich, Paul Nottke, and Julius Stahlke. When I searched the 1920 census for Paul Nottke, a Carl Berger and family were two families down with an address of 3635 Winchester Ave. The names and ages of the other members of the Berger family match the members of my Beyer family. My conclusion is that the enumerator mis-entered the surname as Berger for some reason and the Carl Berger family on the 1920 US Census at 3635 Winchester Ave is in fact my Carl Beyer family.

GREAT STORY. That's exactly how to use the FAN club strategy. Very smart. Congratulations! I may have to use your example some day!

Thank you Connie. I did wonder what “fan” referred to. I enjoy watching all of your videos and I always learn something from you to improve upon my own family research methods.

Good stuff, Connie! I’ve been inadvertently doing this while researching my 3rd great grandfather John Dice. When I looked at his probate records I saw a surname that seemed familiar- turns out that I have neighbors that I’ve known all my life who’s ancestors were close friends to my ancestors. Seems that these families leapfrogged from Pennsylvania, through Ohio, and ultimately settled nearby us here in Indiana. It makes sense that moving to an unknown place would be easier if someone you new and trusted had gone there beforehand to check it out.

That’s wild that your neighbor was your ancestor’s friends too.

I like the straight forward way and explanation of the process, neatly and succinctly. It also shows the importance of why to keep research notes. Thanks for the great video.

This was really informative. Your presentation was awesome. I never heard of FAN Club but have used this approach unbeknowned to me. It has been very helpful in researching relatives from a small town where it seems everyone is related to everyone somehow, lol.

I love the story you build around these gentlemen. There is a sense of family and community when we find these, even if we’ve never met. I’ve found a couple interesting stories myself, although i have not had much success in probate records. And there are so many other things to follow I have not got back to it. I learned about FAN club in one of your earlier videos, and started watching those witnesses show up in census records. So much fun! (Im a geek! 🤪). But i also hate the thought of floating trees-too easy to forget about. Wouldn’t it be nice 😉 if Ancestry would put a FAN relationship, then color/notate that person’s box differently. So you know instantly why they are there. They can color the males an females, I know they can do this. Thanks for your insight and stories. Always worth watching!

We’ve talked about different ways to add a non related person but apparently it’s not so easy for the algorithm to handle.

Hey! Laramie Wyoming! A connection to me! I currently reside in Laramie. I've lived here off and on since 1986. If you would like, all these buildings are still standing and I can get photos of each of them and send them to you.

What a great thought. I actually can see these buildings in Google Earth (street view), so I'm good but thanks for the offer. Some day I hope to get out that way. I want to go to all the places where my ancestors lived. My danish ancestors lived there for many years. It's on my bucket list. Thanks for offering. That was very kind of you.

Go to the Community tab on the KZread channel here...kzread.infocommunity Then scroll through the posts for the ones with the handouts, click Read More and it will open up the post where the links are. I've started doing a Monthly Roundup too with all the links from the past month.
