Dude that first part of your video when you were testing the engine compression was very interesting especially to a disabled auto mechanic like me. I wanted to see what you were going to do next with this motor then boom we were swimming with the fishes? I would have loved to see you remedy this compression loss with this engine. Thank you for the video.

nice video here. where can I find your fancy relay? really convenient. I need to run a compression test on 2 vehicles but can not seem to find a helper to crank the vehicle. At first, I did it all by myself but then realised that the progression of the reading is also important for diagnostic purpose

brian = I thought the same... since humidity can go into the engine while sitting...due to hanging open hose can cause maybe corrosion inside.I drove the car like that with hanging crankcase hose for the whole summer since I did not realized it was off.Today I connected it back the way it suppose to be.

never heard of that before. Great vid. Brian, from another vid I saw here, when cilinder had bad comp I think that the outer ones are prone to have poor reading compared to the center ones. Is that right. If so, what is the reason ?. On my prev car always got oily spark plug in number one ... it was so gunk that the cilinder wont fire at all. Cheers

did you check the PCV system before the compression test? I have some blow-by on my diesel Astra and mine pours oil through a lor of seals (dosen't burn oil or any funny noise, just did 300km with it on freeway without need to top up with oil). Heard of you don't replace the pcv filter every 100 000km, it clogs up and causes clow-by to build up (mine builds up only in the rocker cover, nothing comes through the dipstick) and force oil throught the seals.

Question? How do I get rid of blow by? I thought I had a cracked head because oil is getting into my coolant, but my neighbor read my compression sheet, & said I have too strong of compression for it to be a cracked head or head gasket. He is a master mechanic, so I believe him. I was willing to pay him to fix the head or head gasket, & he doesn't turn down money, but he is pretty honest with me, for the most part. He came to the conclusion that it's blow by. Drives me crazy, cuz it smokes, & my new radiator changes from fresh looking coolant to brown oily looking coolant, after driving. Any suggestion on getting rid of blow by? I have a 1990 Ford F-150. Thanks in advance.

Got a 97 OBW. Steady stream of air coming out of the capless oil filler tube. A friend says the timing may be off. I believe that's true. Regardless, Justin Stob at AWD in Oregon blogged about an overheated block can crack a cylinder lining. Any way to test for a cracked lining vs. worn ring without taking head off? (Obviously my engine overheated due to HG failure as explained in a few of your videos).

Brian I bought a used engine,I flipped it over to gain access to the crank. Had it like that for a few weeks with the old oil filter hooked up. When I went to start it,she had a massive amount of blow by. It's slowly going away, and it looks like steam , there's NO oil indication in my air cleaner. I pulled plugs and a few of them were oil soaked ,after changing them the oil disappeared. What the hell, is it blow by or not .

My Astra H has sprayed oil all over from the top of the dipstick tube (pushing the dipstick up), now I'm getting brown oil in the top of the coolant tank and my coolant's low even after just being refilled. Is this blow-by? Or is it even worse? Of course it's worse, but is the clean-oil-in-coolant due to over-pressure in the crank-case busting the oil-pump gasket? Or is my engine dumping coolant into the oil, blowing oil out as it boils?

Plug makers don't want to get sued for someone stripping out a cylinder hole. They also say to install plugs with a torque wrench. I use it every time I do a steel plug into an aluminum hole. The key is to use a TINY bit near the business end of the threads and let it spin the rest of the way round and up being cautious not to rip the soft, delicate, aluminum threads out.- Remember, if you DON'T use it, you can seize the threads to the plug and rip them out that way! People say not to do things to protect themselves legally. They don't care if your plug rusts in- as long as it can't be blamed on them.

  • @SouthMainAuto

Common sense is like never seize. A little bit goes a long way. Us mechanics that use the stuff know what I'm saying. Use one dab of anti seize next thing you know its on your face up to your elbows and smeared on every tool you touch for the next two days...
