What if Your Crochet Gauge is Off?

A crochet gauge measures how big or small your stitches are. When measuring the gauge, we will check the width and height of the stitches.
What happens if your gauge swatch is off? Besides the obvious of the garment not fitting, the shape of your item might also look different than it should.
The other issue when the gauge is off is you might either have an excess of yarn or run out. If you want to make sure you are using the right amount of yarn, check your gauge. If you crochet more stitches per inch, more yarn will be left over than intended. And if you crochet fewer stitches per inch, then there is a good chance you might run out of yarn.
Most designers, including myself, will suggest making a gauge swatch, so you don't have to rip your project apart if the gauge is off. It's the best way to ensure your project is getting off to a good start. If frogging doesn't bother you, then start your project.

I think this is the only mention of hook position I have ever seen during a gauge video. Also, I never heard of the golden loop. Thank you for "teaching an old dog new tricks" 😉
Thank you very much. This was the most comprehensive explanation for why we should make a gauge swatch I’ve ever seen. Now I will always make a swatch. Also thank you for teaching how we can troubleshoot our gauge swatches to make gauge.

Glad it was helpful!
What an informative 10 minutes. I have struggled with Guage for years not knowing how to correct it. Thank you.
This was very enlightening, thabk you. My gauge is always off vertically, and I know that I have a tight tension typically, so it was so helpful for you to explain the golden loop and how it can affect everything.
THANK YOU!! I have just made my first gauge because I’m about to crochet my first garment - a very cute and simple tee. Two rectangles, sew them together, and voilà. But my showed me that I was at 4 inches at 11 rows instead of 12 rows. I was about to start my second gauge with a smaller hook size when I was watching your video. This was super awesome information ❤❤❤ I never knew this about the angle 🤯 This so glad I just have that first little loop on my hook, and never got any further on my second swatch ❤❤❤
Excellent and complete tutorial. Thank you for explaining the height. It took me forever to learn how to fix it.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I found it very helpful to correct my gauge stitching.
My rows have been too short for over 30 years! I've resigned myself to buying more yarn and just making more rows! The crochet hook angle explanation really clicked! (And it will probably help my wrist strain too)
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Best explanation 🎉Thank you
Thanks Briana! Great explanation!! I totally get it now!!
Thank you so much! It was very helpful!😊
I'm a slow crocheter. What is the minimum size of a gauge that you recommend?
