Here is a blog post with some more info!
www.melaniekham.com/new-gauge-...
The basics of the gauge information that I shared.
- Gauge is very important when you make anything where size matters like clothing. Hat's are included, I didn't really mention hats in the video. Any sort of sweater or clothing, gauge is very important.
-When you make a gauge swatch for something that will get washed, was your swatch to see if it shrinks.
-Tension can vary based on how you crochet, how tired hands are, how experienced you are etc.
- Example of a gauge size on a pattern 8sc + 6 rows = 4 inches
All samples were made using Vanna's Choice yarn and different size hooks.
Crochet Example 1
J hook (6mm) , crocheted tightly
8 rows x 6 stitches
12 sc + 16 rows = 4 inches
Crochet Example 2
Loose J hook (6mm)
7 rows x 6 stitches
12 sc x 14 rows = 4 inches
Crochet Example 3
Size K hook (6.5mm)
6.5 rows x 5.5 stitches
11 sc + 13 rows = 4 inches
Crochet Example 4
Size I hook, (5.5 mm)
8 rows x 6.5 stitches
13 sc + 16 rows = 4 inches

To Melanie’s family thank you for leaving your sweet Melanie’s videos up for us to continue to learn from. I refer back to her videos all the time. She had such a gift for teaching. My heart breaks for the loss of your sweet beautiful Melanie.

I was coming to find a video on gauge and found Melanie's old video. She is so loved and missed by this community and it's so wonderful to be able to still see her beautiful face and hear her voice. Thank you, Robert, for allowing us to still have Melanie with us. ~Cynthia

All very important reasons why gauge matters! Your demos were so helpful to see how the gauge can drastically change when using the same yarn but changing the crochet hook. As an experienced crocheter, I know that I have to downsize 1-2 sizes of hooks to achieve the given gauge since I crochet more loosely. Your little tool looks like a great way to quickly assess the gauge of your work.

@@MelanieHam I tend to be a loose crocheter. I made a beautiful sweater watching directions very carefully. It turned out horrible. I'm starting over and I'm taking Sybil Derderian's comment about downsizing my hook. Off I go again to make this sweater. :-)

Hi Melanie! Thank you so much for this tutorial. Im in the process of making an afghan. And I read somewhere that you should measure the width of one repeat in the swatch to determine the number of pattern repeats necessary to make an afghan. What does that mean, and could you please provide an example from an actual pattern? How do I measure a pattern repeat? What does that look like in a swatch? Thank you, thank you soo much!

I am having trouble making a gauge for a pattern. It says 6.5 stitches x 6 rows equal a 4 inch...but when I use the hook recommend across it measures 3.5 “ across and length wise 4.5”. I thought it would be close enough, but when I tried the pattern...it was way off in width! Should I go up a hook size which will change the wide but it will make it off length wise? Thank you!
