@@ilikethehook haha, it's not a real game... it's when you have barely enough yarn left to finish a project and finish it with a tiny bit to spare! 😊

My dad had this absolute talent for always finding the end of the center pull of a skein. Unerringly, he’d poke his fingers into one end and just… pull it out, no yarn barf, no snags. Every. Single. Time. Unfortunately, I have not inherited this wonderful skill.

If you go by the label, on a label that has the tops of the letters at the skein ends, pull from the top end. If the letters have their sides at the end of the skein, go to the left end. I still have trouble finding it sometimes, still get yarn barf, and there are some yarns that this is still problematic for (KnitPicks CotLin for one--can never find the center pull, so I just cake it up from the outside pull), but it's a general rule of thumb.

I've found that if you spend a little time fingering your yarn ball 😏 you can often feel out the tail and yoink it out with minimal yarn barf

My mom taught me how to do it if makes crocheting and it helps crocheting or knitting. 😊

A term that I have used with my knitting is TOAD - Trashed Object Abandoned in Disgust. Usually this is a project that starts out with high hopes but ends with great disappointment due to any number of factors.

Later, when I've come to peace with my TOADs (love this!), I like frogging them back into a ball and thinking about how sometimes in life, you really do get another chance at redoing your mistakes

I lost my crojo for years after my nan died… then one day figured that actually nan would have preferred to see me enjoying the crafts she taught me, so picked crochet and cross stitch back up again! And I think she would have loved some of the stuff I’ve made!

Laughing here, I just finished playing yarn chicken, and won (with 7 inches left)! Exhilarating! In my more than 60 years of crocheting and knitting, I never heard of that term...but it's my new phrase of the month! Proof you can teach an old dog new tricks! Love your videos and always pick up new information!

Yarnscape = meaning a place where all your yarn is beautifully displayed. LOY= Lifetime of Yarn, your yarnscape has so much yarn that it would take a lifetime for you to go through it all Yarn Ban= When you’ve purchased so much yarn that you have to ban yourself from buying it for awhile These are just a few, there are so many, I’ve been crocheting for over 10 years but the list gets longer, lol

I’m such a rebel…no swatching, ignore dye lots, and hand ball my twisted hanks. Also results in tangles. Maybe I’m not a rebel, but just absolutely nuts 😂

I am a center-pulling heathen and I dropped my yarn cake a bunch of times on my last project so the WHOLE CAKE became yarn barf. It was not a fun time. And it was colour change yarn so there was no cutting bits out. XD so I bit the bullet and untangled the whole skein. I was so proud of myself

Thanks for putting this out there. I'm in a group of people learning crochet and knitting. A lot of our newbies need this so they aren't completely in the dark when we start talking about our WIPs.

I played yarn chicken once. I never thought crochet would ever give me low level stress but that moment did. Glad to say I won, but never again. 😂

I didn't know the expression "yarn chicken"! Hilarious! Recently I won: I made myself a top from a 1,000 meter ball of thin cotton thread - and ended up with less than 1 meter of yarn! YaY!

Looking forward to this! As English isn't my native tongue, these kind of vocabularies can be very tricky. 😅

If I was smarter I would try to think of an acronym for those of us who are rebels in not swatching, stitch counting, or pre-planning a project. Tony, I love your videos and it is because of you I have picked up crocheting after over five years of not. I just love the energy you put out, the easy way you walk us through everything, the fact that it really shows how much you love doing this that you really have a lot of talent and a big heart to share it with all of us, and that smile-wow! Most creators never show their faces but you "talk" to us and that sets you up above everyone else.

What a fun video! I don’t crochet. I knit so the terms were familiar. Sometimes in knitting you have to “TINK”!!! That’s knit spelled backwards when you need to take out a few stitches but not frog! I call my place Area 51 I have so many UFOS of different kinds of projects! 🤣

😂 yarn chicken!! I laughed out loud, was just playing that game earlier. Made it and even had enough to add the first popcorn flower embellishment to the end.

This being my first Toni video I intend to binge, as you are a joy to watch and hear. Great info and easy on the ears and eyes.

Ms. TL, You are by far, the best crochet teacher I've come across as a beginner--and I've been watching a lot of vids. I'm hoping and praying you will do more vids for us beginners on things like using back bumps, how to read a pattern with all those darn initials, how to chain 1,2 or 3 then turning work with unique but easy stitches like stacking SC's etc. I always find myself coming back to your one video for beginners whenever I lose my way. Oh ... and I'm def a beginner-yarn-chicken!! 😂

I have a love/hate relationship with yarn barf 😂. I love not coming across it but when I do, I hate it but sometimes I look forward to untangling it and winding it up myself so it looks really pretty. It helps me de-stress especially when I need to take a break from a large project. (I'm looking at you my king sized tree of life blanket)

I've been knitting and crocheting for 55 years. My biggest complaint? It's when the manufacturer ties a knot in variegated, ombre or even gradient yarn and the colors don't match. WHAT??? How is _dark blue_ the same as _white?!?!_ (I have the pic to prove it.) Now what? I cut out the knot and search through the rest of the ball/skein/lump to find the matching color and tie a new knot. Sometimes that's not possible, so I'll hunt through other balls/skeins/lumps of the same dye lot until I find a match. I will not let them win!!! 😂

This was definitely a fun video. I don’t crochet, and no our language very well. But it was still fun to hear you talk about our special terms. Oh, yes. I never watched, but that is probably because I pretty much stick to things that don’t require anything. In other words, I don’t create wearables. I enjoy crocheting, or knitting, blankets, hats, shawls, etc. That way I don’t need to watch.

Thank you so much for telling me I needed to wind hanks! I have been lucky to not deal with hanks of yarn in any of my projects so I never had to deal with this. Now I know if I ever get a hank I need to wind it first. You have saved me from potential stress!

I almost always find the end in a ball of yarn. In Australia we call all skeins, balls and the hank is called a skein. I sometimes have a BARF but not often.

It's 3:30 am and I just ran across this video. I'm so glad you discussed hanks. I was just gifted some yarn and it included a few hanks. I had never seen this before so I'm glad to know it's not usable as is straight from the pack, but that it has to be "prepared" first. I'm sure you just saved me a headache. Thanks! That alone just earned you a new subscriber. 🙂

I have heard all of these (experienced some, like trying to work with a hank - I spent three evenings detangling the thing and ended up with six separate balls and no losses - except for my sanity) because I spend way too much time on Reddit, with the exception of UFO, because I call that Work/Project on Hiatus. Another term I would like to pitch is Stash Buster (projects), aka the things you make with all the extra yarn you bought to avoid yarn chicken. I also think we should have a term for scrolling through crochet related media instead of working on a project that is now placed in your lap (and will remain there for the next half an hour). Procrastination, but make it... crochet-y.

But just a heads up Just as the stitch terms are a little different here in uk our names are too. Here we don’t use “hank”. That yarn form here is a skein, and “bullet skein” is always just called a ball. We don’t differentiate between ball shapes they’re just balls. ☺️ Sending you another cuppa , for all that honey! I lost my crojo as I'm going through a divorce but this week I picked up the keys to a new apartment for my girls and I! I picked up my crochet things from the storage unit so I really hope soon to be able to take the time to get my crojo back. I started teaching myself to crochet December 2020 and it was life changing. I can't wait to get back into it. I even started learning Tunisian crochet thanks to you. I'll pick something from your book, I think!

I learned about Hanks when I got some of the pantoneXcaron yarn Collab a few years ago. They quickly became the bane of my existence.

I love the term Yarn Chicken it is actually my favorite term out of all the things listed in the video. I never actually knew it was called yarn Chicken but as soon as you said it i knew what you were talking about and i totally related to it😄 i find that i often play yarn Chicken without actually noticing it. Great and fun video! Learned HOTH - which had confused me from the Star Wars planet :-P Another tool (notion?) that I recently encountered was a nostepinne - a wooden stick with a groove at one end used to hand wind balls/cakes of yarn. A handy tool and one I'm still learning to use properly.

Bonnie Barker pronounces it more like Scan, I'm assuming it's a dialect thing 😄 I call it hank / cake / ball depending on the presentation!

There are also options on the twist of the yarn, either a Z or S twist. When you crochet and the yarn seems to untwist, it is usually due to the type of twist.

I’ve been crocheting and knitting for the last 11 years and I’ve never heard most of these. 😂 I’ve always just done it as a hobby on my own. I rarely use patterns and often just eyeball things which has worked well for me so far. I’m just now getting into crocheting/knitting more and trying to learn some of the things that no one taught me when I was little. I’m overdue for a level up in skills. Thank you for this.

THANK YOU for validating the way skein in pronounced. It's a pet peeve of mine. I actually unsubscribed from a popular crochet you tube channel because the woman running it continually says "skeen". I know, I'm high maintenance.

Since I buy most of my yarn on clearance, I’ve gotten really good at yarn chicken. 😂😂

I was working on a poncho a while ago with a sort of lacey border around it, and I was playing yarn chicken with the last row of the border. I think I had maaaaybe four inches of yarn left at the end, after I'd been reduced to threatening all sorts of harm upon it if it made me order another skein. Also, "stash." The leftover bits of yarn where there's enough left that you'd feel bad tossing it, but it's not actually enough to do anything with, so it just accumulates until you have enough various odds and ends to to do a "stash buster" project.

I played yarn chicken and lost. I had a dickens of a time finding the color I needed for just a few more rows and it cost me more than twice what I paid for the yarn I originally bought. Lesson learned. Thank you for everything you do for us. You’re the best!

SABLE = Stash Acquired/Acquisitions Beyond Life Expectancy -- To have more yarn than can be used in a lifetime, can be said jokingly or seriously. FYI, I have successfully used yarn straight from the hank. I placed the hank around my neck like a necklace. I unwrapped a round or two from the hank, worked my row, and repeat. When I was done working on the project, I carefully took the hank off and set it aside with the project. I just did not feel like balling up the fingering-weight yarn by hand.
