What is a "Pin top" guitar top ?

Музыка

A quick look at the inside of a Pin Top guitar. Future videos will show how this works acoustically and sounds, but this is what it looks like inside.

Wow, I don't see a lot of "firsts" any more. Thank You!. Did you fabricate the parts for the pin support? This looks like a wonderful treatment for the difficult problem of "bulge" on a light top. I would think it also may have some fine tuning benefits. I have experimented with making lighter variations of the "bridge doctor" (for repairs, of course), and while they do fix the bulge, and make the top more rigid, I feel the solid connection to the tail block is robbing too much of the mid tones. The bass and highs get louder, but the "mids" fall away. Thoughts?

I use standard Allen head bolts and carbon fiber rods for the pin and support. I've used spruce dimensioned to equal the stiffness of the carbon fiber, and that works well, but I prefer the carbon fiber rod. I've never installed a "bridge doctor" and have no real thoughts about it other than I'd expect it to affect the sound somehow. Whether that is a positive or negative effect would depend on the instrument.

@@chuckmorrison thanks! And right you are. A BD can really help a cheap plywood top. I doubt it will improve any fine spruce or redwood top though.

Really interesting bridge. It looks like you use a veneer instead of bracing on the sides. Can you share more about that too?

The sides are "fully lined" with reverse kerfing made with Douglas fir recycled from a 120 year old house. See my video - crude luthier vids #6 for more information on that subject.

    The carbon fiber bar is 3mm x 8mm, That's 1/8" x almost 3/8".

@@chuckmorrison Thanks!! another thing would be interesting to know. Is there a proportion to determine the support bar, where the pin is placed, in relation to the width of the board at the board?

  • @chuckmorrison

I'm assuming the support bar you mention is the brace beneath the sound hole that the pin contacts ? That brace is as long as the sound hole is wide or slightly longer. It is placed about 20mm (3/4") below the sound hole. The pin is aligned with the center line of the top. Note that the pin contacts a small brass inlay in the brace, not the brace itself.

does the pin come out before you close the guitar up?

  • @chuckmorrison

no, the pin replaces the transverse brace that traditionally spans the top below the soundhole. It is an adjustable support that frees up more of the soundboard than traditional designs.
