What If We Covered Our Roads with Solar Panels?

Ғылым және технология

We sure love our roads. We love them so much that we seem determined to pave the entire world. But maybe roads can become the future of renewable energy. That’s right, roads as energy generators. How? By building them with solar panels. Do we have the technology? Could we power the entire world? What are the drawbacks?

    @Mr Horse that's a kinda stereotype brother because in present times solar energy is not much in use. As our dependence upon fossil fuels will reduce and new technologies will rise then of course solar energy will be the most used energy for our needs.

    @@shas1nov but unfortunately it won't be as efficient as nuclear reactor though since the waste from solar panel is harder to recycled and producing more waste compared to a nuclear power plant which you can reuse it after the half-life, solar powered is also very dependable on how clear your sky is, if you have a cloudy sky and incorrect solar panel angle to sun rays then your efficiency will drop very much while nuclear power is constant 24/7

    Plenty of people have debunked 'solar roadways'! There is a reason that panels are angled. Putting them flat on the ground reduces their efficiency by more than half. Throw in the expense, fact that the panel surface gets hammered with even light bike usage (nevermind huge lorries or the deluge of cars/vans that have debris on the tires), the other debris on the tires (oil, dirt, mud, chemicals, grass etc, etc) that will gum up the surface. Then there is the small matter of the congestion on the roads in the morning as people go to work, afternoon as the school's get out & in the late afternoon/evening as people come home from work. These lines of these cars will block out sunlight completely from hitting the panels. In Europe, plenty of places get only a few usable hours of sunlight in the winter months. In short, it would be far far far cheaper, far more efficient & less resource intensive to put them on everyone's roofs. Heck, it would be far cheaper to put a canopy over the motorways themselves & cover them in solar panels than it would to replace roads with panels.

    Who’s gonna pay for that... you know the reason why people don’t have solar panels is because these are very expensive for not that much of energy. Countries prefer to spent their money on the military, the education and the social help (nvm America does not care about the health of americans lmao) and then a little part goes for the environment... well seems like we’re not having solar panels for dinner

    With our current advancement in solar technologies, this would seem like an impossible feat. Our panels are designed to be implemented in areas with as little sunlight interreference as possible in order to harbour sufficient energy throughout a day cycle, not to mention the finance and resources that would cost. However, its not completely impossible, I believe it can be achieved through compromise such as selective implementations limiting it to areas with optimal sun exposure, this mixed with a more robust innovation of road panels meaninf having them actually be a productive road structure that functions both as a road and as a source of energy.

    Sounds like a cool concept. Can't even imagine the maintenance though as the panels get driven over day to day. I think solar farms on unusable land and or carefully planned and designed solar panels on buildings and houses would just overall be a better cost option but hey who knows.

  • @RAMBOLOGY

    @RAMBOLOGY

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@KownKR7 wtf are you talking about of course you need to plan carefully. Placing panels in dead spots matter or else your throwing money away. Why do you think solar panel companies ask for your electric bill. So they can plan a system that covers your bill averages in kilowatts for the year and give you enough panels so you don't overspend on panels you don't need in which those panels are placed in spots where sun hits the most throughout the day. Kown please educate yourself before making stupid comments.

  • @KownKR7

    @KownKR7

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@RAMBOLOGY Its really not that hard bro. Planning is required, but not "carefully" its easy. Also building a system, that only covers your bill averages in kilowatts for the year is just very stupid. Always build as many as possible, doing less is just stupid. The more panels you buy the cheaper it gets, because you always have to pay for the build, the cables, the inverter, the people, etc. And if you build more you only have to buy the panels, which are extremly cheap nowadays. Finding places where the sun hits, is also quite easy and not really needed anymore, since the inverters can balance the difference on the strings between the panels in full sun and the ones covered in the shade. A east/west orientation is also getting more and more famous, since that way you have electricity in the morning and evening where you are actually at home, combined with an additional south orientation to sell electricity at the day or charge a battery, if you have one, and you got the best combination. Either you never properly educated and informed yourself, or someone just told you very shitty, bad and completly outdated information. Please educate yourself on that topic, if you wanna dicuss it properly.

    Why not the barren spaces particularly the deserts are choosed for laying solar panels? In the process, those vacant spaces may come into use and in future that creates possibilities for plantation. It's obvious, some tiny plants would initially grow under the panel's shades out of seasonal rain. 👍

    Another idea would also be to have absorbent roads to absorb kinetic energy from cars on these solar roads into it's own energy. If we are going electric cars we could use the roads both to charge cars and society and get even more from extracting that kinetic energy. If coal is shut down, we can instead use it to create coal products which could see a rapid drop in those types of prices
