Invisible walls can be a helpful tool in map design, but it's annoying when you want to go somewhere only for it to be blocked off. But... what would happen if there were no invisible walls at all? In this series, I remove the invisible walls from every map in the game, explore the newly accessible areas, and discuss how the map's gameplay would change. cp_vanguard would be a really different map without boundaries. There is a lot of interesting geometry outside of the map: parking lots with a few vehicles, bridges under construction, empty barns, etc. There's also some cool easter eggs with bird cutouts, signs, and general whatnot around the map.
After playing the game for so many years i never realized how immersive the maps can be if you had freedom to explore them

I only realized now that the 3 caps at dustbowl are 1 map and you actually play on the whole map, and the control points indicate that BLU are really taking over RED base, because they are starting from old RED respawn points

Imagine this repurposed into like some GMOD map, with working doors and properly optimized areas so all the doors that lead to nowhere now go places and connect to other dead end/out of bounds rooms until it's a fully functioning facility.

Yeah. For the longest time I thought that it was just another remote room with a backdrop looking like the base. But when I saw all the weapons lying around and all the blood spilled on the floor, I realized, that it's actually one löng map.
Am I the only sick individual who really wants to see an actual game played on here?

This would just be a map where blu tries to cap E, honestly only E it's possible to cap, this would turn out to be an interesting KOTH map, if only E was left

Yeah, I really like how it plays around with the gamemode it's in. Very, very interesting. I'd like to see how Steel's concept (permanently cappable final point, optional other points making things easier) would translate into Payload or Mediaval Mode, or if there are other great ways to mess with the format of TF2's core gamemodes. Maybe 5CP and CTF would finally stop having those damn stalemates. Maybe KotH would stop being a pseudo A/D with rapidly-changing roles.
I suggest doing cp_dustbowl next, since there is an unused place in the first area that’s above the second point that connects to the tunnels, which would likely be unbalanced as hell but interesting to see. It would need lighting added to it, though. And probably stairs.

You know, there are maps in the workshop that already do this. Just search for the phrases "free" and "open" in the workshop and you'll find a bunch of maps like this. Although the "free" maps tend to have additional content to them, for instance "free mercenary park" made the monorail thing ridable.
You should definitely do Powerhouse. It seemed to be intented to have so much more space.
Steel is one of my favorite maps because it's so big that it feels like a mission in singleplayer campaign. This makes it even cooler!
you could add one of the invisible walls that prevent a certain team to pass through to the grid in red spawn leading to the hallway next to A that way you can remove that boundary without blue getting in

Definitely agree, mapmaking is a tough hobby to rise to heights with and I feel like the community forgets how many maps in the game were made by fans.

6:23 simple; have an engineer sentry jump up to a a rooftop and place a teleporter exit there.
I'd be really curious to see what would come of cp_junction, might even make it slightly more playable? Surely it'd open up some real estate... right?

It's really cool to see you making this kinda stuff, and seeing you progress over the years, and even though i dont play tf2 anymore, its still fun to watch your vids, i will always cherish the fun moments we had on Orange Surf
Ah now I remember, there was one engineer on the blue team, that somehow was able to build a tele up on that roof area, and he literally placed a lvl 3 sentry up there, now this was on casual btw, so I was still wondering....how did he get up there, because you mentioned that there were two doors blocking that pathway, probably did an exploit and used it to their Advantage, and let me tell ye, it was no fun at all, to have a sentry have an aerial view of the last point
I feel like blue is using this map review thing as an excuse to get the soldier base jumper achievement
If you gave all the classes increased vertical mobility, I could see playing on this being fun. Various weapons give different abilities, maybe like medic gets grappling hook, sniper can climb like in ctf2w, and engineer can throw buildings.

An engi could sentry jump and place a tele on top of a building to let anyone get on that roof. Perfect place for snipers and sentry guns

It's honestly pretty fun to see someone else who is as interested in the background areas of tf2 maps. Sometimes I launch them in gmod or in spectator mode just to look around. I think hydro is honestly one of the best, a lot of the areas in hydro *feel* like background areas, but aren't.

Fun fact, a lot of these little doors that connect areas together were actually old connections between points that were blocked or changed after testing. Good observation at the first red spawn, that metal grate on the floor that goes to that underground path used to exist but I thought it was fun to patch it over instead of removing it completely as little nods to these old expired ideas and gives the map little baked in stories. -JM

btw i can see that you set the timer to a massive number, but instead of that type mp_tournament 1 into the console before the waiting for players countdown ticks down so no need to worry about the time limit

They do, they make everything out of grid textures so the focus is on gameplay, and after it's been playtested a lot they can start deciding how areas should make sense in the world. You can find tutorials on TF2 mapping on UEAKcrash's KZread channel or TF2maps.net
This is probably the easiest way to make TF2 gameplay super immersive and interesting. Can you please make a video of playing on this maps with your friends or on samwiz1 server, if you unable on your? It would be cool to see how it works in real gameplay, not in exploration
I cant help but feel that this would be a lot of fun to play on with Zombies mode, If the zombies have a way to get everywhere.

8:00 Honestly, that looks like a place you would spawn if Tf2 had a singleplayer campaign. Like, a chopper would drop you off and that looks like an entrance
You could put the blue spawn door to B after the door to blue spawn, then if someone spawns under spawn you can go outside from the lower level
With these projects of removing barriers from maps, I wonder how well stitching together maps with similar aesthetics could work purely as a community-type map with no objectives.

Finally, fun fact about 22:52 : there's a nav mesh bug in the regular game that actually connects this room to the point, as if the window didn't exist. So if you play cp_steel with bots, the BLU bots will actually all gather in the room and against the glass trying to get to E, but will remain stuck endlessly jumping against the glass.
would be perfect for 100 players, but i don't like how you opened up whatever grates were in the floors that lead you to brazil. the floor is sacred. i don't know why but the way you said you can capture the intelligence was really funny
This would be a good zombie survival tf2 map
This map (if ever played) is a very momentum based map. If you can push through [A] red will have been scrambled and if you still have a push [B] would be considerably easier to cap. [C] is pretty balanced and If you're still riding the high of [B] you could reasonably expect to cap it (fastest cap problaby). [D] is ugly. That's really tough to get past. [E], I think, is attack biased. It gives blu so many ways to attack unseen, unbothered, or otherwise. Pretty good.

The classes you want to play on this map is the god forsaken ssssssquad. Soldier and scout to be able to navigate and move throughout the map easily. Sniper because there are alot more sniper perches and spots than before. And spy, because of the excessive amount of small hidey-holes for you to make an escape or prepare for an attack.

I watched this video to fall asleep but now I'm intigued and lost the desire to ZZZZZZ, Can't believe how much stuff we don't get to see in these maps
Haven't watched the video fully yet so I'll edit this comment when I do: Fun fact: there is a secret room that I don't think you can find easily in game, I forgot where it is (who knows it might actually be in a different map) but it's a big dark room with doors leading to I think 2 big rooms with doors blocking the entrances to them at the time of writing he hasn't found it Edit: he didn't find it, I'll decompile the map when I fix my PC and put a link here to a screenshot

Did you remove areaportals, occluders and hints again? They are optimalization things and when you remove them then the game works worser. Removing boundries shouldn't break anything
