I Changed TF2 Maps So You Can Go Anywhere

Mapmakers don't get enough credit, do they? They design these beautiful areas that you rarely see because they're blocked by invisible walls. Well, as a staunch anti-invisible-wall activist, I have arrived with the solution! This time, I've edited Landfall, Mercenary Park, and Pier to allow you to explore the entire thing. And since these maps are super detailed, well... these turned out to be super cool. Also yes, I know Big Joey already did something like this with Mercenary Park, but his version was a custom, heavily modified version of the map while mine is pretty much what you'd find in-game. Hopefully that (and the fact that I actually talked about how the map would change) is enough to set them apart.

In my quest to create opened maps for the new server, I finally figured out how to extract textures from maps made after Tough Break, so that means maps like Enclosure, Banana Bay, and Mossrock are on the table now. Models, well... we're working on it. As far as the server goes, I'm super excited for something like this to exist! We'll experiment with a few maps, as well as the inclusion of grappling hooks, for the first while it's up. Once it's actually created I'll make a community post and Discord announcement detailing everything.

I'd love to see people continue your work and turn these maps into fully fleshed out and open areas to explore. Even if TF2 can't run it it would still be cool if you could explore them in GMOD. Maybe remove the excess props and turn them into sandbox maps. I know a lot of Gmod animators would appreciate that.

Check out "Free Mercenary Park" on the workshop, it's actually insane how many details they put into usually inaccessible areas. It even comes with a functional tram!

How about a TF2 map with a full interior in the bases, for instance, the Mann Co. building on Bigrock would be even cooler if you could access some of the rooms and enter it completely, or 2fort, being able to fully walk around the facility and access the mess hall or sleeping quarters then walk down the hallway and get to the main control room like in “destructible 2fort” but with more!

I can imagine an open world survival map with TF2
TF2 maps are such an interesting study. When you're actually playing them, all you think of is "mid point, flanking route, chokepoint, enemy spawn." But when you go and explore them, there are lots of little worldbuilding considerations to make them actually look like a company's warehouse. Like how many people would have noticed there were missile launchers in the Landfall spawn rooms?

I'm a big fan of the TF2 setting and had actually considered starting my own video series about obscure/unofficial TF2 lore that can be gleaned from map details. I've explored about 90% of all of the maps added to the game (including ones not in common rotation like cactus canyon, arena maps, seasonal/event maps, etc.) and the thing I'm typically looking for is strategic military, intelligence, or general logistic importance. I've been quite shocked at what I've found. There are 7 intelligence briefcases that are used as decorative elements in non ctf gamemodes, and there are more rockets & missiles in this game than I think anyone really realizes. Powerhouse is a massive rocket transport/storage/launch facility, and steel seems to be a major manufacturing or other logistics center in addition to storing a full ICBM above the center point. Don't get me started on junction. Vanguard, powerhouse, steel, and a few others have missile counts as high as in the 20's & 30's. Gravelpit has the sci-fi death laser thing on point C, and there's all manor of weird details hidden all over. Coldfront has a full ICBM silo off to the left side leaving first spawn, and the first/last points are elevators to presumably take personnel up to the surface. Many maps have strange areas, some with potentially mysterious significance, hidden directly beneath control points, like gorge, sawmiill, and snakewater, that use the same elevator hardware as coldfront. The most interesting things I ever found were some hidden short range missiles in sheds on viaduct (check behind some chicken wire in the buildings leading from spawn areas to the point) and the presumable strategic objective of highpass which is oddly asymmetric. Usually koth (& 5cp, plr, ctf) maps are symmetrical, either rotationally (2fort) or along a mirror plane (powerhouse, nucleus). This is mostly the case for highpass, except the Blu side is completely missing a small detail. Next time you're on highpass, when you're around the middle point, take a look at the red spawn building for some yellow and black shapes that don't belong on such architecture, and notice it is completely missing on Blu's spawn building. A few maps don't seem to have clear military objectives though. Metalworks and pipeline are just a bunch of refineries as far as I can tell, and some payload race maps have both teams trying to destroy the same exact target, which is just confusing. In banana bay, the train will hit one bomb or the other, what difference does it make? Does Reliable Excavation & Demolition or Builder's League United want to take control of a banana republic or something? Why are the mossrock and brazil radio towers important? What even are the nucleus and mountain lab devices? What are the mercs doing in Egyptian archeological sites? How the hell does asteroid play into this, if at all? These are the questions that keep me up at night, for better or for worse.

Remember that RED and BLU are just money-sinks for Helen the Announcer to divert resources (and thus attention) away from something. This happened in SD_Doomsday, she was planning on using the mercs and Poopy Joe's rocket crash as a cover story while she made off with the Australium. She's banking on the mercs to not care enough to notice both sides are trying to blow up the same targets (and frankly she's bang on the money, the mercs DON'T care)

Imagine some fucking Thanos sized project of taking every TF2 map and somehow fusing it into a "TF2 World" where people can teleport from Dustbowl, into 2Fort, then walk into Gravel to defend one of the thirty of so points, all while keeping watch of the other 10 intels and spawn points.

Although you'd need a big map for all of them, splicing maps with similar settings would be nice. Edit: I believe tf2 has 146 maps including arena mode but not any other unused maps, so splicing all of then together in a believable way is insanely hard, if not impossible Edit 2: Don't want to imagine mannpower + mvm

*shows off rocks perfect for hiding ninja teleporters in* "Eh, I don't see why you'd want to be there." *shows rafters perfect for ambushing from* "I don't know know why you'd want to go up there but you can." I'd love to see how he plays on these expanded maps in an actual game and how fast he adapts to the shenanigans.

Good vid, also about Mercenary Park, someone actually already did a fully explorable with no barriers version of Mercenary Park, with the exception they added a lot of new areas that fit within the balance of the map!

"I don't know why there's a wall around the air conditioning. Afraid people are going to steal it?" It's actually a building/OSHA regulation thing. It's wind protection to keep any workers from being blown off the roof when they are up there to service the AC units. It's not for their protection, they're far too heavy to be blown off normally or carried away, you need a crane for that.

@@Fayewylde knowing Mann Co. subsidiary companies, they probably really do put them up to prevent other subsidiaries from stealing them, and it's just serendipity that it happens to be OSHA compliant.

This is the TF2 universe we’re talking about though, so it’s probably actually there to protect maintenance workers from gunfire
The map compilation style is better than just one map per video, imo! Also I would love to see an open server using these moded maps, just to watch the chaos unfold lmao

I don't know why but a lot of the maps look great for ninjaneering. If these maps would run on a server. Ninjaneer wouldn't be a bad option cause like there's so many just weird spots that do nothing so people won't really check.

it's crazy how pier actually connects itself on almost every path way and little room are all accessible via pretty realistic path
I want 2fort to have a full interior, like you’re able to go to the main control room through a doorway, just like have the entire facility be open for exploration
9:33 Weirdest part about that hole is the fact that it isnt modded, and is just there. I sometimes play the map just to hide there until someone finds me

this favors engineers cuz you can hide teleports in more spots and, as an engineer main i love this idea.

This is nice. Also, something that'd make me happy would be if someone opened up the MVM maps.
Dude, that side route on Pier with all these additional buildings feels so cozy.
The one map I really need to see opened up is Upward. I remember as a new player, looking up and wondering what chaos would ensue if you could go to all of those buildings. Not to mention the fact that the map is one big circle, so it would be infinite flank hell.
Man this series if how I found you, and even then I still love this. Also if you ever make a server of your own, adding all of these and calling the server "TF2 released" would be a good idea.
This just makes me think Merc Park would be a great Mannpower map if you made the boundaries a little wider.

For Mercenary Park, there's a map on the workshop called "Free Mercenary Park" that does what you did but also adds places that isn't in the original map. Probably not the first one to mention this though.

I love how pier is so connected, but I feel like red team would have a difficult time there with the open areas

There should be a map with a naturally accessible skybox. Maybe with a giant sizing ray or something such.

Pier is my favorite map, glad to explore it more in depth out of bounds outside of gmod, and see what new spots could potentially be opened up from removing the playerclips

I think you should *probably* edit some map, like put some stairs in other places so that you aren't forced to pick soldier,demo, or scout for height management
Seeing this video reminded me of when I played around with the first person mode glitch in Ratchet and Clank 2 to wallclimb into areas which were normally inaccessible
i hope someone do the dustbowl where you can go everywhere without that fences which separate in 3 parts

This puts "THEY'RE IN THE TREES" into another perspective.
On the plugging electrical sockets into each other thing, plugs aren't even made pronged on both ends because of how dangerous that is
You don't realize but the behind area spy now has an advantage on and can use as a run away method; even assuming spy gets himself cornered, dead ringer and even then dragging the enemy away from the intel.
I'm so happy to see Mercenary Park and Pier in this series! They're some of the most interesting maps to explore. Now I'm just wondering what it'd be like if Hydro was opened as well...

Some people are creating maps like this with even doorways to these places you can’t normally got to and health and ammo packs too
I can't wait to eventually play these with people, and hopefully the server won't fill up immediately, true chaos will be so fun.
I feel like this kind of stuff would be cool for the new 100 person lobbys
From working on game areas, I can say that making the background is actually one of the most fun parts, because you get to "paint" a background with 3d objects while knowing the player will never get close enough to scrutinize them. It feels like free quality for way less effort than most things take.
I'd like to see one where you focus in on one particular map and round out the rough edges, texture missing areas, collision missing collision, design out indoor buildings that are normally source cubes, get some help from other map makers, less of a sandbox and more of just a funny, but fully built bad map.
This episode has a distinct lack of small walkways between two closed doors but that has been replaced with the hilarity of electrical outlets plugged into other electrical outlets

Thenkast two maps are among my favorite open up these you want to play with as many players as possible like 32 and above.
You should check out the party room in the back vent of Blu spawn, if you were not already aware of it.
There’s a map called free_mercenary park and it’s like open merc park but it has working pods, a fly able helicopter, and a giant elevator at the last point.
Any Cp map with this level of openness would be amazing

I don’t care if snipers would be incredibly over powered and not fun to fight, I’d 100% play on a sever hosting these fully accessible maps. It allows so much opportunity for players to do whatever, not just combat oriented, there are multiple spots I was like “dude I’d love to have a friendly party there.”
I've always wanted a sequel to "What if TF2 maps had no boundaries"... ...i forgot that i got my wish a months ago.

They really need to do this officially. Engies need more places to hide fun sentries, spies to hide their lying evil asses, and pyros to drop out of from nowhere leaving us all terrified for hours.

There's a lot of maps like this, usually referred to as "free" maps, you should check them out.
9:47 it's an AC unit in the TF2 verse. BLU and RED probably steal each other's AC units constantly.

Funny how many people don't know about that secret river room in Pier, it's a great tele spot as long as the enemy team doesn't have smart spies.
If you ever do this again, banana bay is a fun one for this! the train keeps going and it just drops you off in the void!

So, quick question: would you consider running other maps you’ve covered on your server, besides these expanded existing maps? I mainly ask because of the Chao Garden map you looked at ages ago: I always felt like the racetrack area would be great for deathmatching. I’ll admit there’s little point in having the rest of the map in TF2, though, I honestly just want deathmatching in the Chao Race area.

A lot of TF2 maps made by valve are "bad designed" cuz almost all of them were made with an idea in mind but not the proper time to finish, note that I said valve maps cuz excluding mercenary park the last batch of valve maps were made in July 7, 2016 with at least 2 maps, You'll see, valve maps are always incomplete or with discarded out of bounds geometry that could really improve the map if properly finished, I said it's lack of time before but it's just my thoughts, not really a fact Ace ocarinas made a video all about the missing side of "power house" witch make frontier with hydro... Story wise
