What I'll Never Understand About Japan

Ойын-сауық

Japan can be a confusing place. In this video, I reveal the things that still confuse me, the strangest thing I've seen in the country, and the frustrating time I was refused an apartment. Also, is cheating common in Japan and who will win the sword battle between Natsuki and Ryotaro?

NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Natsuki and Ryotaro united at last! What more could you want from a video? For the next few weeks Abroad in Japan videos are going old school; which basically means it's just me in a room eating cup noodles. But do any of you share my childhood fear? And do you want to see Natsuki quit smoking?! Let me know in the comments. And don't forget to check out the new Abroad in Japan website and steal some soundbites from the soundboard! Enjoy! (www.abroadinjapan.com/) Stay safe guys

I used to smoke for 17 years, and I was addicted to it. That breakfast that Natsuki enjoys is called a "Fisherman's Breakfast", and it is every smoker's breakfast. Smoking suppresses hunger, so it would obviously replace actual food for breakfast. I also used to smoke as much as Natsuki, roughly. But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I just woke up one day and said that I'm done smoking. However, you can't force a person to quit, because they will get pissed off, and they will resist quitting more. I certainly did. It is tough, man, but it's a decision that needs to be made by Natsuki. A couple of things that helped me: - Don't drink coffee or alcohol for about a month (both lead to temptation of smoking) - Replace smoking with another activity (I replaced smoking with exercise) - Keep your hands busy. Half of the anxiety that comes with quitting is that you need something to do with your hands. - Don't make a big deal out of quitting (the more you focus on it, the more you crave). I had actually forgotten how long ago I had quit, but apparently I'm on my 8th month. Woohoo! - Never say "I'll just have one". We all know what that means with booze, so it's obviously the same with smoking. One is never just one. - And, lastly, avoid social gatherings for a while. They generally tempt you into smoking, as well. Natsuki, if you want to quit, these are some things that helped me overcome an addiction that I thought I never would. I know that you can beat it, bud :) (if you want to, of course)

damn thanks for taking your time writing those out and I'm happy to hear your progress of not smoking! One question though, have you try or heard the chewing gums trick? I heard it also helps you since you keeping your mouth busy from smoking. Hopefully Natsuki can gradually lives a healthier life so I'm looking forward as well for the documentary if he ever going to make one.

@@KryKaizen It's my pleasure :) and thanks! Gum works for some people, but I just ate some snacks, instead. Partnered with exercise, the food did my body good, considering that I was burning a lot of energy. I completely agree! Unfortunately, smoking is an addiction. The amount of times I said "I know that smoking is bad, but I just enjoy it so much". It sucks letting something have that much power over you. Natsuki will make the decision for himself, and he'll have good friends to support him. I hope they're prepared for cranky Natsuki, though. It's unavoidable.

For all those who want to be non-smokers.... I always recommend “Easy Way to Stop Smoking” by Allen Carr. It’s been translated into about 26 languages, I don’t know if Japanese is included. The English audiobook is amazing. I did try to read it once, but I found the material stuck better with audio. It’s only a 6 hour listen. I sometimes go back and listen to specific chapters if I need too. It’s a powerful book, and seriously.... I cannot recommend it enough.

A bit late to the posting here, but I just watched this and it hit home! My name is also Chris and I was afraid of ET all of my very early childhood. When I was very young my Mom hung a poster of ET on the wall near the entrance to my room...Every night for 2 years I slept in fear, frozen in place, scared to look away from the wall.. I can still remember it vividly... damn ET. One random beautiful day I came to the realization that I had the power to take the poster down... so I ripped that sucker down and life drastically changed (not even exaggerating!). So, ET is an evil ugly bastard... but I owe his demon-looking ass for helping realize I have the power to make changes in my life lol.

Still don't understand how native speakers always meas this up. It's so easy and it's weird to see it get messed up all the time as a "non native english speaker".

  • @tiagobsreis

    @tiagobsreis

    3 жыл бұрын

This kind of mistake is much easier to make for native speakers, because they first learn how to speak and only several years later they learn how to write, essentially as a process of coding the speech into graphical symbols. So it's easy to mix up things that sound the same, even if their meanings are obviously different. Non-native speakers usually learn writing along with speaking and their minds associate foreign words with the words in their native languages, where they probably sound very different, and thus the risk for confusion is minimized. It happens in other languages as well. My native language is Portuguese and we pronounce the words for "plus" and "but" ("mais" and "mas") in the same way, so a lot of people keep mixing those two up when writing. Obviously, for someone whose native language is English, it is impossible to accidentally swap "plus" for "but", so if you think of a sentence in English and translate it word for word to Portuguese in your mind, you won't be making this mistake that a lot of proficient Portuguese speakers make.

  • @pascaletje9

Can relate on the ET. I was gifted an ET doll as a child one Christmas with a voice box that played his famous quotes from the movie. Complete with red cape and everything. The voice box would just never die, there was no visible off button either if I remember, or battery bit. I developed such a fear of this doll that my parents put it in the cupboard where it would wake me up a few times with a muffled ‘eeee....teeeee phone home’. I don’t know where it went - I was six at the time but I hope it stays away..

I am now going to do something here, that I have always hated when other people did 🤣 Dear Natsuki. I am an old smoker. I smoked 40 cigarets a day for 20 years, and before that I smoked between 20 and 30 a day for 23 years. I started smoking at the tender age of 12. Last year on Christmas eve I decided enough is enough. I put out my cigaret and threw away the rest of the packet. I have not smoked since. Still get these pangs where I look for a cigaret and it is HARD. But most of the time I do not think about it. In my life I have tried many, many times to stop. But I never succeeded. I believe you need to be ready for it to work. It does not matter if your friends and familie are ready for you to stop, If YOU are not. How do you know, you are ready then? I do not have the faintest idea. All I can say is this, if and when you think. "I want to stop". Go for it. Maybe you are ready, maybe not. But at least your body will benefit from the days you succeeded in not smoking, or smoking less. It wont hurt. And one day, you may just hit the right moment like I did. And then you are a former smoker. Good luck and stay safe

I don't want to speak for Natsuki, but I don't think he really is interested in stopping to smoke. I think he doesn't care about death, nor life. He often seems to be trapped, with no real goal in life. It's not like he can't enjoy things, but he takes life as it comes, I doubt he really has sth like a bucket list. So I just wish him to find his place in life, to be happy, and if that is reached, healthy without smoking, to make that life enjoyable as long as possible.

Are we sure he did not mean to say "Just is delicious" instead of "justice delicious"? The latter one sounds more fun though xD

Ongoing joke from when Ryotaro said Just As Good very quickly and it sounded like Justice Good. And the rest, my friends, is history

Funny thing is me and a friend had a similar joke about misspelling "just as planned" as "justice planned"

I think he was trying to say "Just Delicious" but added an "is" unnecessarily. A pretty understandable mistake imo since he's not a native speaker

I still contend that he's saying "Just is delicious". Describe it in one word,,, that one word is 'delicious'. It JUST IS DELICIOUS.

You are not alone...I was terrified of ET when I was a child. That scream of his is the stuff of nightmares. Keep up the great content!
