My mom taught me the best way to hide my cash when traveling. You can get a flat fanny pack that you can hide under your shirt. That way you can keep the majority of your cash safe, and you can keep a small bill in your front pocket. Someone tried to pickpocket me on the French subway. He tried to reach in my coat pocket, and my friend yelled my name and pointed at the guy, and he backed off. Nothing was in my coat pocket, all hidden in my fanny pack under my shirt. I was only 13, and I remember how shocked I was that an adult tried to steal from a child.

Wishing him and Yuki both financial and emotional recovery. The non stop work culture of Japan makes it to where one puts their entire hopes/outlook on the 1 week a year that they might be given freedom to travel and be themselves, this crime hits on so many stress points for a person. :( Wishing them both the best and (if possible) for Yuki to find a better more understanding and flexible employer.

As someone who was born in and lived in London for 50 years, I can assure you it's not a new thing with the thieving scumbags in the tourist spots and I include the legal thieving scumbags who own stores that charge 5x the price of everything too! As for the not so friendly attitudes in central, most Londoners are there doing jobs they'd rather not be doing in an area they'd rather not be working in. You'll find people do get a little friendlier as you get further out, but generally London does tend to make you a little gruff after a time, much like NY really! Yeah, if you ever go to the UK for a holiday, don't go or stay in London, it's really not nice there. Everything you can see there has something better elsewhere. Go down the Bath for a couple of days, see Stonehenge & the Cotswolds. Go down to Canterbury and see the wonky Tudor streets & see Dover Castle. Travel north to see Hadrian's Wall. I legitimately at most would spend a single day in London sightseeing if you felt the need to. You'll spot most of the sights (Big Ben, Westminster Abbey etc) within a couple of hours. Don't bother trying to go into anything, just get your photos from outside and move on. Then save those other days for places outside of London which are nicer and more relaxed.

We used to go to London with the kids, every summer for all of their childhood. And we used to stay in very cheap hotels. We were never robbed out in the streets. Since we were wearing backpacks on the front always. But we lost lots of stuff from the cheap hotel rooms though. That was before bankcards, and when everyone were using cash. Just remember to wear your back packs on the front from now on, and your stuff will be a lot safer! x

I went to Iceland, England and France earlier in the year, our travel agent told us London and Paris have pickpockets. There were signs warning about pickpockets at the airport when you arrive at both London and Paris. We took precautions and thankfully never had an issue. I recommend one of those backpacks that is knife resistance and has a lock for the zippers.

Both trips I have dropped my passport in Japan and someone has rushed around trying to find me. I'm forever grateful and im very much not interested in visiting other countries specifically because anywhere else in the world that would have been gone.

If you're looking for more of the English experience like local pubs and cobblestones, I'd recommend York or Cornwall, Pete. London isn't the best experience of what the UK has to offer. I'd also recommend Edinburgh for Scotland. It's where I live and for being the capital, you don't really have to worry about pickpockets. If you and Yuki ever visit, I'll treat you guys to a few pints to not sour your experience of the UK.😅

My husband and I watch it together and having an almost 2 year old doesn't give us much time. 😅 Pete, that sucks! I know what it's like to be pick pocketed. It was Christmas time and I was only like 12 and my parents gave me money to buy presents. It's not as bad as you, with all your cards, but I understand how bad you and your wife felt. I hope they find the people who pickpocketed you!

Honestly if I moved to a foreign country I think I'd want to live in a smaller city. Still something big, mind you, cosmopolitan, a lot to do, but not the biggest cities like London or Paris (or Tokyo). I think it would be easier to get to know the place. Maybe they just have a bad rep, but I've talked to people a few countries - England, France, Germany... I don't think any of them really recommend the capitals aside from specific tourist things.

I landed, got my bag, and went to my room only to find that my bag was swapped with someone else's which was EXACTLY like my own (it had my tag on it). Pete's London trip was vastly different than mine. I went in 2012 with my wife and grandfather. We were there for 9 days, and of course we also saw things outside of London, too. The wife & I knew to keep our belongings in our front pockets, and our hand on our valuables. When I went to Piccadilly Circus, in certain areas you would see signs posted up that would say, "Beware of Pickpockets" I am curious at what hotel Pete stayed at. I was on at one on the Russell Square line, and it was near a lot of good stuff. We stayed at the Imperial London Hotel the year we went. We had the option of Continental Breakfast every morning. The wife and I also met a bunch of friendly Londoners, too. It seemed a lot more friendly than Pete & Chris described. Yeah, there were a few folks who weren't, but a majority of folks seemed fine (this was also 11 years ago). London was great around Christmas time. Hyde Park with Winter Wonderland. Piccadilly Circus with the Santa hat on Freddy Mercury. Just how festive some of the areas were, it was real nice.

Almost got pickpocketed in London in 2003. Lady was unzipping my bag (which was on my front) while I was watching a street performer and I looked down and saw her hand which she quickly withdrew and disappeared off into the crowd. Saw tons of pickpockets in Rome who were absolute slick professionals. Never saw any in Paris or Munich.

Nobody really NEEDS daily uploads, but in trying to do that, I feel like the stuff you've learned from this journey was well worth the added stress. Also nothing wrong with being able to stretch the releases by another few weeks, means you have plenty of content to bleed into the next year.
