What I learned as a prisoner in North Korea | Euna Lee

Ғылым және технология

In March 2009, North Korean soldiers captured journalist Euna Lee and her colleague Laura Ling while they were shooting a documentary on the border with China. The courts sentenced them to 12 years of hard labor, but American diplomats eventually negotiated their release. In this surprising, deeply human talk, Lee shares her experience living as the enemy in a detention center for 140 days -- and the tiny gestures of humanity from her guards that sustained her.

My Dad was in the 2nd I.D. And 82nd Airborne during the Korean War. I often asked him to share his experiences with me. The one story he would always tell me was about a North Korean child (about 12 yrs old) who would come up to their camp atop a huge mountain and offer to do their laundry and clean up around their living quarters. At first, they were all suspicious. After a short while the men began to trust and grow quite fond of him. They would tip him and provide him with food for his family. It was, in my Dads words, the right thing to do as they saw a child in need and not the enemy. This experience made most of the men in my Dads company very uncomfortable about the war and changed their perspective about much of it. He became the mascot of the camp and when the armistice was called, they gave him gifts and took pictures with him as the boy cried that his "friends" we're leaving. So did my Father and his men. Barriers broken, even if in the smallest way.

There is something wrong with your story (your father's story). What does he mean by "North Korean boy"? Do you mean the encampment was north of the 38th Parallel at the time? When the Armistice was called, of course the Military Demarcation Line (and four-kilometer wide DMZ) was NOT exactly on the 38th Parallel. Most of it (mostly in the mountainous East) is north of the 38th Parallel. So, did the "North Korean boy" become a South Korean boy, since his village wound up south of the DMZ? (Or, did your unit withdraw to the South a bit, and your Dad's unit didn't offer to take the kid and his relatives with them to the South side?) To put it simply: there were NO "North Korean" or "South Korean" kids during the War, since the war front moved up and down the peninsula. (Seoul, for instance, was in North Korean/Chinese hands TWICE.) When you (or your Dad) says, that he and his fellow soldiers saw not "an enemy but a child in need", does that mean that they didn't notice the continuous stream of Korean refugees heading north or south (albeit mostly south) as the fighting raged and lulled alternately? Also, keep in mind, there were Communist southern Koreans waging a guerrilla campaign all during the War. There would be no reason to be any more trustful of a kid from a South Korean village than one in the nominal "North". ....So, I don't see how their interaction with this one kid would suddenly cause them to get "uncomfortable about the War" (started when the Communist dictatorship blitzed the South in the summer of 1950) or "change their perspective about it" considering that they must have noticed the civilian population all around them the entire time they were there -- and especially the fact that many of the civilians were on the move. (I mean, what the heck is a "North Korean" or "South Korean" when the battle front is moving past villages and the people themselves are moving north and south of this fluid line?!?) This kid was just a "Korean kid". ....The only thing I'm curious about is, did they leave this kid (and the remnant of his family, if he had any) NORTH of the DMZ? ....The boy was "crying" probably because your Dad neglected to put him in the Deuce-and-a-half truck before re-deploying to the South!!

The Western media has people believing without a shadow of a doubt that North Korea uses "harsh" measures to control the country, but these primary source of these claims come from highly biased sources, often coming from defectors who were paid half a million dollars to demonize North Korea, and who were later caught lying due to severe inconsistencies in their stories. These claims about a "Brutal Dictatorship" are used as justifications to put decades long harsh sanctions on the North Korean people that cause far more damage to North Korean society and the economy than the Kim regime 'supposedly' has done. North Korea has become pretty far removed from the long term development to communism, but when your country cannot develop due to extremely harsh trade sanctions over the course of decades, this has very distorting effects on a society that simply cannot be helped. This is why North Korea has favoured a "Strong Man" dynasty ever since the 90's in order to cope with extreme economic aggressions toward their country since the 90's. But more to the point, why is the way a particular society is organized, to cope with extremely harsh sanctions and economic aggression toward their nation, a reason to undermine their sovereignty? I have a lot of sources i want to present that show how the defectors used as "primary sources" for western media articles about north korea are a complete lie: songjiyoung.wordpress.com/2015/07/23/in-the-making-of-north-korean-defector-activists/ www.policyforum.net/unreliable-witnesses/ This anti-DPRK article shows that South korea raised the Fee that the government pays to North Korean Refugees to nearly 900 THOUSAND dollars, in order to gather what it calls "intelligence": www.newsweek.com/why-south-korea-offering-more-money-north-korean-defectors-564330 Here is another source from a typically anti-DPRK media that shows inconsistencies in the accounts of the "Defectors": www.theguardian.com/world/2015/oct/13/why-do-north-korean-defector-testimonies-so-often-fall-apart NyTimes article referring to the same defector (typically very anti-DPRK): www.nytimes.com/2015/01/19/world/asia/prominent-north-korean-defector-shin-dong-hyuk-recants-parts-of-his-story.html Here is another source from a pro-socialist (not necessarily pro-DPRK) website that refers to severe inconsistencies about one of the most famous "Defectors" to South Korea: www.liberationnews.org/wests-favorite-north-korean-defector-lied-un/

It is a joke of a country, they have absolutely no human rights there. And, if they even suspect that you committed the most trivial of crimes, you are going to be detained, and held in one of their labor / death camps. And used as a political pawn for the leadership there to try and bargain with the USA to lesson the massive sanctions that we have on them. The naturalized citizens who reside there, have absolutely no rights. And, any person who happens to visit there, has even less rights. When we think of North Korea, we think of all the bad things. But it is important to remember that all the bad things are from the face of the government that isn't even by the people. The government consists of one man's idea over the whole country. Its unfortunate that so many innocent people are born into this and many brainwashed into thinking that system is right. At least we learn that even then, there are people with minimal humanity. It's just sad that this isn't always the case.

One man can have a terrible vision; but it is up to the people to help him carry that vision out. The people make decisions every day to follow the one man. If they wanted to they could kill him and create a new government. They choose to follow one man's idea. An argument could be made that the ruler is terrible; but that the millions that follow him are just as bad because they collectively decide every day to comply. One man cannot do anything. He needs everyone else to go along with it.

@@bcb2585 I think you should watch some other interviews of North Korean refugees. I know that living in developed countries we take freedom for granted- freedom to make decisions, freedom to express, freedom to think. But please understand, that this is not the case everywhere in this world. It is perhaps very difficult for you to understand why they follow a system, which is dehumanizing even them. But, you should try. When a child is born into this word, his/her mind is like a clean slate. Whatever they know, understand or believe comes from what they see around themselves. When you ask the question - 'Why don't they choose to rebel? Why do they choose to follow?' Perhaps they have never been acquainted with the idea of a Choice.' Some things are only understood when you experience them yourselves.

It is incredibly important to separate the North Korean people and the North Korean government. Especially as the North Korean Government makes big threats against the US. The NK people are the NK government's first and worst victims. They have to live under NK government rule. Nor is Ms. Lee's experience unique. Around Christmas one year in World War 1, both sides called a halt to the fighting. Before long soldiers from both sides were playing games like volleyball in No Man's Land. During the American Civil War, scouts for armies on both sides were known to play cards with each other. It is also good to remember that Ms. Lee got kindness from some people in North Korea, but got none from the government. The NK *government* is still a genuine enemy to South Korea and the US even though its *people* are not, or need not be.

It's all for the benefit of the regimes of the Koreas. They each need to maintain their power, so they demonize the rival power and use it as a bogeyman for others to fear. The only difference is that South Korea has a system that's objectively better for the common people, but the conflation of North Korea's government and people is still wrong. I read a book that she was in. It wasn't focused too much on her, but she was in it occassionally. It's called "Somewhere Inside" and right away, I figured out that the book had to do with her. But at some points, that thought vanished because some things didn't line up, however that's only because her point of view wasn't mentioned as often as her journalist partner, Laura Ling (or Lisa Ling, it's been a while since I've read it), it was solely based on the sisters, Laura and Lisa, responses between letters and diary entries. To me, there seemed to be about 4 or 5 entries for Euna, but yet, that could be wrong since I haven't read it in a while. Originally, the book was tossed out by my mom who didn't ask me if I wanted it with me being a bookworm. I happened to be on trash duty and since the trash was just filled with papers and other unnecessary items from her room, I dug it out since I looked at the bag and just saw the book. Honestly, I could imagine everything that went on because of reading the book, like I know I'm more than likely not imagining it as worse as it really was but yea. :c

@Stephen Williams You show poor understanding. Most people in the nation are indeed very afraid and not evil. But those, who are leading the country, are evil to their own fellow country men and all who come in their way. One must see both entities. You only see one and choose to be blind for the other one. But that other one would kill you slow or fast, if they could.

@Stephen Williams You live in Utopia. Look what communism has brought to the world. Like in the book 'animal farm' where the pigs take over and the poor beasts work harder, than ever before and complain because they don't feel the promised equality any more. So the pigs reply "Some are more equal than others." This is what people do. Look at what national socialism brought to Germany in the last century. People cannot handle such a system, no matter how ideologically worthy it may seem. The next generation of pigs or Nazis are ready to take over real soon.
