As much as that’s true, everyone’s skin is different and people seem to forget this fact. I never used to wash my face with a cleanser either nor did I ever used to use any skincare in general until 2012 when I went to MUA school. Now I’m soon 36. Never had acne prone skin or skin issues in general until I actually started using skincare… my partner is basically 50, and he has little to no wrinkles and he too doesn’t really use skincare. I force him to use sunscreen besides moisturizer, as he’s white and of Celtic ancestry who are the most prone to develop Rosacea, and skin cancer. Ironically I got Rosacea after starting using skincare my self. I didn’t even struggle with acne when in puberty. A zit on or around my nose whenever I ate junk/sugar. That’s it. Regretting it now to say the least. That I even started it in the 1st place. From the nature side of things, the skin takes care of it self. Depending on your skin type, and climate some won’t even need a moisturizer. Only thing I’d say is necessary for certain people are sunscreen.

I wash once a day, just before bedtime, with Cerave oil cleanser. I use sunscreen every day, but rarely wear makeup. The sunscreen is not water resistant and comes off easily with just the Cerave. I'll be 77 this November, and my thin, sensitive, elderly skin has never been better, thanks to watching Dr. Dray and following her advice. Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge, Dr. Dray.

My husband is the typical man that refuses to have a skincare routine. He just showers, uses a 2 in 1 shampoo and doesn’t even bother with lotion. This man has beautiful skin and has not aged at all. Meanwhile, my oily, textured skin cannot go one day without washing my face at least once a day. I have tried using just water in the morning and was able to get away with that as long as I don’t use heavy products the night before. Otherwise, I use a gentle cleanser in the morning and a foaming cleanser at night. I think genetics do play a role here for sure

Genetics and life style. Most men I encounter that have seemingly flawless skin with no skincare routine are very physically active. Regarding biology, men have on average more thicker skin and more collagen than women. So it isn't all too crazy why men often have great skin while having horrible skin habits.

@Dr Dray I appreciate the realism (and subtle humor/sarcasm briefly at the beginning) in this video and that you still accept that some “unicorns” may be able to skip face washing but the rest of us realistically still need to take this important step. I like that you recognize there are some lucky folks out there who are being honest about their skincare practices, but their routine isn’t necessarily the right one for everyone.

  • @FitChickGlows

Yes, I love that Dr. Dray mentioned the Unicorns being the exception to the rule. It’s usually the Unicorns that can do this and the majority are duped into thinking they can but is not good practice for them. If I don’t wash my face my skin gets congested! Also, I NEED to wash the drool, sleep, possible sweat, and any microscopic debris from my face. Ugh! I can’t imagine not doing this. Lol! 😂 Same thing about not moisturizing. I’d turn into ash and crack if I didn’t hydrate and moisturize. And don’t talk about eczema. And in winter! Good Lor’!! 😳

Maybe the enviroment is more polluted. My dad skin is so nice. He never had a pimple and his skin always look normal, never oily or dry. However I do not win the genes lotto and I have the most sensitive skin ever. Skipping face wash would be equal to having really bad acne. I have never heard such a detailed explanation of rosacea and the products that are prescribed to treat it! Wow! Dermatologists are known in the rosacea community as not understanding the role of the mites and we have to figure all of this out on our own. I am 33 and almost NEVER washed my face in my entire life. I was so sensitive to everything I would wash with, and if something worked for me it wouldn't last long- I determined that it was best to just skip it. This worked for me until I was close to 30 and had rosacea like you couldn't fathom!!!!!! I have been trying so hard to fix this for like 5 years now! I finally have a routine figured out and it includes washing twice a day with two different cleansers.

I think the environment you live in plays a huge part. If the air is clean your skin will be too, if there is pollution you’ll need to wash. Also, you need to give your skin the opportunity to decrease oil production gradually. The more frequently you cleanse, the more oil your skin produces to replace what is lost so reducing the frequency gradually allows the skin to adjust. The same goes for washing your hair. I wash my hair once a week and exfoliate in the shower the same day. I cleanse my face if I’ve been wearing makeup, if my face feels greasy I swab with micellar water. This has been my routine for the past 30 years, I’m 60 and have unblemished, wrinkle free skin and thick, glossy hair but that’s just me. Find a routine which suits you but don’t just suddenly stop cleansing,.

In the morning I just use water on my face and rinse it really good in the shower and a toner and then proceed with my skin care routine and my face is thriving. I have adopted this routine for my body too because I love showering 2x daily but it was drying out my skin. So at night is a full scrub down and then moisturizing and in the morning just rinse off but only hit my intimate areas with soap and my skin has improved drastically plus it has cut my shower time in the morning in half. My skin is doing so much better and I am still getting the benefits of getting myself clean without damaging my skin.

In my late 60s I developed seborrheic dermatitis. I didn't realize oily skin and acne could make my skin more prone to seborrheic dermatitis, and that it is related to overgrowth of a fungus naturally growing on my skin. Those mites though. 😮

I'm one of those people on the other end of the spectrum where if I don't wash my face 2x a day, I will _always_ experience a breakout where my face will be covered in smaller, red folliculitis-like bumps by the next evening that _usually_ go away after a few days of regular cleansing. *However,* I fell asleep once without cleansing (all I was wearing was that day's skincare) and went to bed with clear skin and woke up with a _intense_ infection all over the face that looked like 1:07 but also on the neck and behind the ears that could only be treated with antibiotics. While not washing the face at night is expected to result in more issues, I certainly was not prepared to such a severe and long-lasting reaction... I wish I knew 100% what caused it to be so severe

I definitely think the body reacts to the product you use. As someone who has oily skin, using a strong cleaners never helped. When I used cetaphil's gentle cleanser for an extended period my skin was finally manageable. Now I use cosrx low ph for a deeper cleanse but still stick to cetaphil gentle 3/4 times I was my face. When I moved away from using shampoo and stuck with using ACV for extended period of time I got to the point where I dont even need to shampoo, but still do once every 2 weeks. My hair is alot less oily and when it does build up some oil it's never excessive and actually makes it look healthier than ever. Be patient and the body will react

You only wash your hair once every 2 weeks?! 😖 I’ve had to wash people’s hair that didn’t wash it for weeks and the smell was like rotten tomatoes and the feel of the hair was so greasy. 🤢 There are so many dead skin cells, oil and loose hair that accumulates on the scalp/hair every few days that one should wash/scrub to get rid of.

Now that I do wear sunscreen and reapply throughout the day, just water doesn’t cut it. Proper skin care def requires nightly cleansing 👏

I dont want to make the rule of my case, but I dont wash my face, appart from water. I have very dry skin, so no washes, no make up. Well, in the very seldom event of having wear some make up, which again, i almost never do, or very heavy SPF, then I use a very gentle wash. And I notice the dryness on the following days. My skin looks clear and fine. Better since I stopped washing. Like I say, it is just my case.

When the lockdown happened I was obsessed with skin care. Serums, moisturizers, etc. My skin was a mess! Then, I got tired of my skin routine and stopped all together. Washing my face in the shower only and very little moisturizer and no serums or other products. Suddenly my face cleared up and has never looked better. I’ve stopped the crazy skin routines and just use moisturizer every few days and I use spf when I go out and my skin looks good 👍.

I'm recovering from a nasty virus, on top of a different serious medical issue. I completely dropped most of my hygiene routine, including face washing, for several weeks. I have dry skin, and some of the meds I take make it even drier. So oil and acne were not a problem. However, my skin was not exfoliating properly ... I developed very rough textured skin, and even started peeling in some body areas. Once I felt better enough to resume my routine, things got better very quickly. I'm not back to normal quite yet - and winter low humidity has arrived where I live. But I'm looking, much, much better, and feel better, too. FYI, I used to be one of those "no cleansing" unicorns. Not any more.

I don’t want what they had. I like face washing, novocaine, antibiotics, sunscreen, seatbelts and child car seats, and ibuprofen, to name a few amazing modern things. My grandparents would never have wanted me to suffer the way they did.

I think the most important piece of advice about facewashing that nobody seems to mention is just like... for a lot of people, it's not necessary or ideal to use the exact same amount of the exact same soap the exact same number of times a day based on someone else's advice?? You need to adjust it to how your face *feels* on that day and what you did that day and where you were and what else you put on your face. I think most people just need to get used to feeling their face while they are washing it and adjusting what they are doing to how their face feels and not going by some generic routine that is supposed to be exactly the same every day. If you don't wear foundation then obviously your cleansing needs are different from someone who doesn't but if you don't need to remove foundation then just start with water rinse and *feel your face* and then decide what else your face needs that day from there - when you do a water rinse you can feel exactly where the oily parts and the dry parts are... you can use soap on the oily/problem areas and skip the soap on the dry areas some days to give them a break because they won't need cleanser as often. Depending on whether you went outside that day, how many products you use, what the air is like where you are, etc. etc.your face may OR may not need cleansing twice a day. I'm in my early 40's and don't wear much makeup most days so I rinse with water twice a day, but mostly I only use cleanser on my nose/chin area (once OR twice a day; depending on how it feels when I wake up I might skip the morning), just because that area gets oily and breaks out easily. Most of my face only gets water in the morning, and if I stayed inside all day and didn't wear sunscreen or it's winter (dry heating in my apartment) then sometimes the rest of my face only gets cleanser every few days because I'm in my early 40's and my face doesn't get super oily in all areas so there's no need to dry out the dry parts of my face *twice a day* if I'm not doing anything that'll make my face dirty and those parts of my face aren't producing extra oil on their own; not everyone's face gets exactly as dirty at exactly the same rate, you just have to adjust it to your lifestyle and skin type. Likewise if it feels greasy when you are doing your water rinse, then you wash it. It's not really rocket science. I'm as tired of the "dont' wash your face it's bad for you!" advice as I am of the "you MUST wash your face TWICE a day EVERY day with CLEANSER/SOAP or else you're GROSS and DIRTY" people because depending on what else you do to your face every day you probably don't have to do that either; the answer for most people is going to be somewhere in the middle and if you don't do exactly the same activities/makeup/temperature/locations every day then chances are the answer might not be exactly the same every day either.

Back in my twenties the acne they said would go away was only getting worse. So I started washing more often. Skin got a lot worse. So I applied logic and did the opposite and stopped washing. Didn’t even use water for a month. After that time I had a clear face for the first time in years. I learned over the following years what caused flares. Soap is the worst. Also straight oil used as a moisturiser. As the months went by the sensitivity reduced and I could tolerate water and then baby lotion as a cleanser and finally gentle face wash. So my acne was more an allergy or sensitivity than caused by too much sebum or the wrong bacteria. Not sure if that is unusual but there are now forums for what they call the ‘Caveman Protocol’ and for some like me it’s the real solution. It doesn’t work for everyone but it’s worth giving it a month or three. After all it’s free!

Vanicream's gentle face wash is too drying. So, I get along with Aveeno Oat Gel Cleanser and I get along with the Avene Extremely Gentle Cleanser. I hit menopause and double cleansing or anything that leaves a film is aggravating my face and eyes. The tugging from a balm doesn't help either. My face doesn't like cleansing oils anymore either. I have actually skipped cleansing for a night or two when my skin barrier was destroyed by products. I might be an exception, but I find my skin looks more wrinkly & irritated when I use the newer cleansers & moisturizers. To each their own, but ngl I am shocked that people don't wash their face daily. Just because you dont have acne or some visible skin condition, doesnt mean your skin isnt dirty/dry/oily or couldn't benefit from a wash in general! Sweat, makeup, pollution, hands touching your face, hair products, your bedsheets, dust, sunscreen etc...your face comes into contact with so much every day, I feel like its a hygienic thing to wash your face. Not saying everyone needs an entire 10 step skin care routine, but a really gentle cleanser daily wouldnt hurt. But everyone should find what works for them. Also besides just health and hygiene, i feel like skincare has benefits in mental health! It can be relaxing to pamper yourself at the end of the day and nice to have a routine and structure if you need it in your life!

I respect you highly... but, I am one of those that has not washed my face in years... am in my 70's... I might have washed my face in my teens, don't remember, but all I do is splash water on my face in the morning... I am allergic to a lot of products, and do see a dermatologist yearly, but basically, the only things that go on my face are water, jojoba oil, and sunscreen if outside. Soap from washing my hair does get on it, but I actually try to not get it on my face as it can cause issues. As you say, there are people who can get away with not washing... I am one of them.

I'm a twice a day cleanser cuz I gotta take my tret off!! I use Arazlo in the evening and 15% Azelaic acid in the morning (both prescription). I am very oily and my 2x cleansing routine with my prescribed products is what is giving me the most success! I trust my derm and Dr Dray over anyone on social media.

Cutting out sugar can help with acne. Rubbing and scrubbing can make things worse.

I've always washed my face at least 2x a day. Not always with a cleanser, but definitely with a cloth.

Have you seen Thayer's Let's Be Clear Water Face Cream, Moisturizer with Azelaic Acid and Hyaluronic Acid? I'm trying it out. Not sure if it's new, but I was looking to add azelaic acid, hyaluronic acid, and licorice to my routine and found this.

Okay how is it that my brother never washes his face or uses moisturizer and his face is healthy , skin barrier intact, and I wash my face and use moisturizer and my face is discolored and terrible.

I usually just wash at night, but if my skin feels like it needs it in the morning I do. I have dry, sensitive skin for reference!! Try to keep as much moisture as I can in my skin and not irritate it by washing too much :). Each of us is different. I’m so glad to have you as a rational guide through all the craziness out there 😊

I will be 70 next year, and I have very fine textured skin with hardly any wrinkles. I don't get many compliments but, when I do, it's always about my skin. In the past, dermatologists always told me to use Dove unscented soap, so I do, either once or twice a day. I use moisturizer, day and night and always use sunscreen. Oh, and also foundation.
