Let’s talk about the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids and what would happen if you started consuming them more often.
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for the body, but our bodies can’t produce them.
You can get omega-3 fatty acids by consuming a high-quality cod liver oil or fish oil supplement. I prefer cod liver oil because it has additional vitamin A and vitamin D.
However, it’s best to get your omega-3 fatty acids from food. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include:
• Fatty fish
• Sardines
• Grass-fed beef
• Organ meats
• Eggs
EPA and DHA are important omega-3s. EPA mainly helps reduce inflammation. DHA primarily helps support the brain. Omega-3 fatty acids may even help people with asthma and allergies.
Consuming more omega-3 fatty acids may potentially help with certain symptoms, including:
• Dry eyes
• Dermatitis
• Macular degeneration
• Arthritis
• Arrhythmias
• High blood pressure
• Leg cramps
• Insomnia
• Menstrual cramps
More potential benefits of consuming omega-3 fatty acids:
• Improvements in fatty liver disease
• Increased calcium absorption
• Decreased risk of certain types of cancer
One small issue some people experience after taking fish oil is burping. You can take fish oil in capsule form, which shouldn’t cause burping. If you’re vegan or are allergic to fish, a good alternative is consuming algae.
It’s important to note that omega-6 fatty acids compete with omega-3 fatty acids. One of the biggest causes of a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids is excess consumption of omega-6 fatty acids.
If you have trouble absorbing fats easily, you may want to try taking purified bile salts to increase the absorption of omega-3 fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins.

Dr. Berg, glad I ran into this episode about fish oil. When you mentioned how important DHA is for Memory, Function, Cognitive Function, Focus.. these are the areas I have significantly having trouble with by the 4th week of weaning off Zoloft, completely (but slowly tapering off in the span of 3-4 months to zero). First it was my focus, then short term memory (I keep forgetting where I put my keys, phone, lock the door, or why I go somewhere, every day..) and then I had difficulty in making a sentence or trying to convey something, it was like my cognitive functions was significantly slow or foggy - that my sister noticed it was difficult to understand me and I would pause a lot in between words just trying to find the next word :( Then I had to tell my family I took the decision to get off it after 13 years on it. I did take Magnesium Glycinate daily at night to help what it can especially with anxiety. But those areas I have mentioned still in "repairing" or feels like "rewiring' is happening.. my speech is better now, not so slow and no more slurring when I speak, and my long term memories of things seems to come back and surprise me. Feels strange to suddenly remember what felt.. "lost" you know? But now I feel like maybe I should take fish oil again to help? Also they're good for my heart. I am 34 but I still have tachycardia & arrhythmia even after WPW ablation. I've consumed before but stopped for a long time and there are new info that I didn't know then which I knew now, thank to your knowledge. I'm 4 months Zoloft-free now and I know it has its challenges and lots of side effects that are coming in every few weeks but I am determined. Just need to deal with the cognitive function issues for now. One day at a time! Thanks Dr. Berg, it gives me hope that perhaps my cognitive is gonna be okay, and that's by fish oil perhaps!

I been struggling with chest pains, breathing problems and many things for the pass 5 years and doctors did nothing to help me. I started having back pains as well and they just wanted me to do gastroypass saying I'll be able to lose weight and get rid of my back pain. I said if I can get rid of my back pain, I can do the exercise I need to do to lose weight. Since I've gained a lot of weight because of being inactive due to my back pains and the pandemic. I suffered and they blamed everything on my weight when my blood test shows other problems. I watched your videos about Vitamin D3+K2 and Glutathione and I bought both of those products and in a few weeks, I started feeling better. I'm now able to move again, no more back pains, body odor has decreased, skin is more smoother and I feel 10 years younger and now going back to the gym to exercise and lose weight. I feel like I got my life back. Thank you Dr.Berg.ngs to lose weight

They all have numerous types of medical problems. I have often wondered if my habit of Omega 3's is the reason that I am very healthy. Omega-3s and omega-6s are incorporated in cell membranes and can last inside these cells for quite some time. Omega-3s stay in your system anywhere from about six weeks to six months. The amount of omega-3s that stay in your system also depends on the amount you receive through diet or supplementation. Vitamin B12 is stored in excess in the liver, decreasing the likelihood of deficiency. Stores of vitamin B12 in the body can last around 2 to 5 years without being replenished, so it can take a long time for any problems to develop after a dietary change.

Dr Berg, your videos are so informative and thanks for that. I have one question. I had markings on my nails like tiny dots and when I took the omega 3 supplement, then it disappears within couple of months. As soon as I stop taking the supplement, it’s back again even though I try my best to eat fish or food with omega 3. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations since I am planning to start the supplement again? Thank you.

Good video. I'd be interested in finding fish oils that *aren't* rancid. Dr. Mason of Australia worked with a lab to test as many oils as they could get their hands on, and no matter how "fresh" they were all rancid. So I've taken to eating wild caught, water packed sardines at least a few days a week. (My cats love the water and get some of the fish oil goodness) Oh and you left out two important benefits of DHA - lowering triglycerides and increasing HDL.

I switched her to a tuna & sardine diet and supplemented with magnesium, calcium, and a little potassium and zinc. It was miraculous! No more seizures, no more spasms, she is back to her old self in less than 3 weeks. I am slowly decreasing the supplements to once a week and keeping the fish diet for one meal a day. *she had an indirect exposure to a dog who later died of Parvo.

You can definitely have too much fish oil. I think a nice piece of fish once a week or squid twice a week is enough. I am very careful with fish oil supplements, because excess EPA can actually shut down the enzyme that converts dietary Omega 6 (Linoleic Acid) into anti-inflammatory Series 1 Prostaglandins, which are also important immune system regulators. This is why I prefer Squid over fish, because Squid is higher in DHA and it has just enough EPA to offset inflammation caused by AA (Arachidonic Acid). Calamari Oil is very easy to find these days, but I prefer to just eat squid. And I always make sure to get healthy Omega 6 everyday in the form of raw Almonds or Cold Pressed Sesame Oil when I have it. Some people like to use Evening Primrose Oil, Borage or Black Current Oil but I would advise against that, as the excess GLA consumed from these oils can be readily converted into excess inflammatory AA.

Hey doc, I recently discovered bromelain on accident, and it made me lose 10 pounds after I got off keto. I had taken it after every small meal, 6 a day and 1 snack. I added some carbs to each meal, and the pounds were dropping off. I know it wasn't water weight as I just got off keto to do a fat transfer and was trying to make sure the fat survival stayed. However, by day 11, I noticed I looked and felt thinner. So, I when I weighed myself, I had lost 10 pounds in 11 days. Is this just the worlds best kept secret, or do you know anything about this? Now whenever I want to eat carbs I just take bromelain and I gain no weight, same with desserts. I'm very confused and happy to have found a life hack that's given me freedom. I'd love to know your thoughts on this supplement, please.

@Arrasel hey, just a heads-up I tied 3 different brands over the year, and for whatever reason, the best naturals 500 mg worked the best. One other one I tried and didn't work with my weight for whatever reason, I forgot what brand it was, but it came in a dark bottle. I used the vitamin shop brand for a while. It was ok but not as good as the best naturals I noticed, and my husband said the same thing. Your body will build a tolerance after a while and stop losing weight, then it'll maintain weight while you eat carbs and even some sugar. Then, after a few months, it'll totally adapt and gain, so that's when I go back to keto for a while. BTW, the sleepy feeling bromelain gives you will go away.

FYI, get the triglyceride form of Omega 3s, not the ethyl ester form, since it is much more easy to absorb. It will say what type it is on the bottle - usually the triglcyeride form is about 40-60% more expensive than the ethyl ester form.

I was taking sea buckthorn oil for awhile (its expensive though 😕). It has all the omegas. It would be great if you could discuss sea buckthorn for those of us who dislike fish oil.

I agree, I hope Dr Berg considers discussing some plant-based options too. There are people who can't consume animal products, in addition to those who don't want to.

Dear Dr Berg, do you think the fish oils would help loss of smell after covid? Or would that be more Alpha lipolic acid? I need help I tend to have anorexic tendencies and without smelling/ tasting things properly it’s worse.

The loss of smell will slowly resolve on its own. There's really nothing you can do about it. It's been 2.5 years since I caught the delta, my sense of smell is still not 100%. I've forgetting what mint smells like lol

I started taking cod liver oil yesterday so hopefully it helps with the issues I have now im middle aged and a life of bad dieting. Is there any way to test the oil inside the capsules to see if its rancied at home? Or does cod liver oil not have the same issues as other fish oils do? Also any advice on maximum dosage to take if you have had decades of poor diet and are now trying to get the body back to good health? I have also cut out most sugar in my diet over the past 8 months and lost 20kg of body fat so things are improving but I am currently having some health issues related to my past ways and hopefully they are brought under control and fixed along with continuing to improve my diet and health.

Hello Dr. Berg, and thank you for your videos! I recently discovered your channel and I'm now learning a lot from you. In this video you mentioned about Soy Milk and Omega-6, and what it does to your consumption of Omega-3.. I actually didn't know about this. So now I'm thinking on changing to Oat drinks. Will that solve the problem you described as the "competition"? Thank you!

Soy Milk is not very good because they processed the soy. Oat milk, almond milk, rice and coconut milk are the best. My dermatologist warned me not to drink soy milk.

Read the labels. Avoid those that have seed or grain oils which are highly refined and supposed to be "bad." Almost all non-dairy drinks will have those in them. The good doctor here has lots to say about that. Also try to avoid anything with any kind of flavoring. The So brand makes a coconut milk without any of those nor any added sugars. And for my taste it only has a very mild coconut taste, probably because of no added "natural flavor", which is a chemical concoction that is not good for you. Supposedly. I'm just regurgitating things that I've heard here and from other sources.
