What Happened to the NCAA's ONLY CANADIAN Football Team... (The Fall of Simon Fraser Football)

Спорт

Last summer I had a blast looking into different college football leagues around the world and came across Simon Fraser University which was the only Canadian School playing at the NCAA level. I also ran into their basketball team a few months later and they were all super sweet. Unfortunately, this video is not a positive one as a little over a year ago, the University decided to axe its football program and the rest of its athletic department may be in trouble as well. This is the story of the NCAA’s only Canadian College football team. This is the fall of Simon Fraser football.

Having college football spread worldwide is a great thing. This story hurts to hear

I think it’s hilarious they competed in the Lone Star Conference, despite being nowhere near Texas.

I had gotten a football scholarship there in 2016. I committed, picked out my dorm and weeks before the admissions denied bc at my JUCO I passed so high in math placement that I didn’t need a math course to graduate. So I took a basic math course. Usually departments will work around this or just make you take care of it the first semester being enrolled. They wouldn’t budge with the HC. Seemed like they made it hard on the coaching staffs to build a team and get what they need to be successful.. It’s already a tough spot geography wise but a very beautiful campus and had a lot of upside. I don’t think it’ll ever be back and it’s sad.

My alma mater, North Dakota State, hosted Simon Fraser's football team in the late 1980's. NDSU was in the midst of its Division II football dominant days. This game was played at the old Dacotah Field (now the Bison women's soccer team's home field), about five years before Bison football moved into the newly-built Fargodome.

This is entirely on the school admin and former AD. Began to operate a D2 program like an elementary school program. Thankfully we still have many Canadian Unis still playing football and a very small hope SFU can be revived. Honestly would not recommend SFU to any athlete of any sport until they show significant changes in culture

My favourite memory of SFU football was during my senior season on the hockey team, when we put up more points in the standings, than the football team put up in touchdowns + field goals all season.. that program was HISTORICALLY bad 😂

I lived in BC near Vancouver when I was a kid, always thought Canadian football was weird. I'm a badger fan, never knew this team existed.

IIRC, Simon Frasier is the alma mater of the late Terry Fox. Sad shame to see this school drop American football from their athletic program.

Speaking of the GNAC can you do the downfall of Humboldt State football? By the way… love the content for these smaller schools as I played D2 football

Also gotta add. The athletic director that scrapped the program was also UBCs old director and she tried to get rid of their football program while promoting quiditch. And the football team can be saved, look up the CJFL, it's collegiate level football but it is community funded. A former CJFL team was absorbed by their local uni. No reason the program can't be revived into the CJFL and then make a transition back into U-Sport. Speaking from experience, the CJFL scholarships pay way more too, sometimes they have so much scholarship money left over at the end of the season that they would give us "bonuses".

I remember when Idaho played them and won like 66-0, this was when Idaho was awful too, in the petrino era

And that did with a running back that SFU was desperately recruiting back when he was still in BC.

Fun fact: They used to call themselves The Clan in reference to SImon Frasers Scottish heritage but they had to change the name after joining the NCAA because players on opposing teams kept starting fights about the name. Was never a problem in the NAIA.

Also, about the Shrum Bowl, there was more than one time in the rivalries history were UBC outright refused to play SFU because they were a blatantly superior program. They actually first made this decision after playing SFU for the first time. I really miss the program, while I didn't play for SFU, I knew a lot of guys that did, I even know some of the guys that were on their last team. A real blow to BC Football as a whole, we have a community league that plays Canadian rules and a highschool league that plays American, you could even play in both leagues at the same time if you wanted to. UBC and SFU represented BC Football in more ways than anyone could ever realise.

SFU's football program is a victim of the rising costs to compete in the NCAA. That said, I'm genuinely surprised that they didn't consider dropping from Division 2 to Division 3, where they could've competed in the Northwest Conference and played teams far closer to home. That said, D3 doesn't allow athletic scholarships, which probably wouldn't have helped SFU bring in players.

It was a shame SFU shuttered its football program, I was going to their games during their last season (since it was the closest team to me; Penn State and Notre Dame are too far from me to go to). Hopefully the team will come back. UBC at the same time that SFU made their second attempt at joining the NCAA, but were considering FCS at some point after spending some time in Division II (had they not let the offer expired)

Yeah, you know whats funny? CFL teams preferred drafting SFU players becauase they played against Americans. Didn't matter if they never won most players in this country saw SFU as a golden ticket to the CFL.

@@xmontesx no offense but to me that doesn’t speak highly of the CFL. SFU was outscored on the lone star conference by an average of 35 points with no conference wins from 2021 their football program wasn’t reinstated last year.
