@lizzy rosario True. Ask anyone who remembers me from elementary through high school. I used to be the biggest Gorillaz fanatic, and was turning everyone onto them. “Plastic Beach” and maybe “The Fall” were their last good albums, and even then, there was a noticeable drop in quality. Then enter “Humanz” with their autotune crap, and I was like Spongebob, “Aight, I’m headin‘ out”. Their unreleased songs that didn’t even end up on “G-Sides” and “D-Sides” are still leagues better than the stuff on their last 2 albums. Music is subjective, though, and to be honest, I can’t stand MGMT’s “Little Dark Age” either. Their second and third albums are their peak masterpieces. “Little Dark Age” is too much 80’s rehashing and trying to please the fans. Nothing innovative or new about it. Done before by many neopsych artists.

In 2018 MGMT released this: "Little Dark Age", their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Little Dark Age". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importantly of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Come on, Ilja. There are a lot more important problems than MGMT to worry about. We have to end apartheid for one. And slow down the nuclear arms race, stop terrorism and world hunger. We have to provide food and shelter for the homeless, and oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights, while also promoting equal rights for women. We have to encourage a return to traditional moral values. Most importantly, we have to promote general social concern and less materialism in young people.

Katzen König "When you die" is about a guy with an insecurity issue that he wants to hide under the attitude of being evil and mean, but the conclusion is that in the end nothing matters when you die. It also has nice trippy sound to it, I had to listen to it multiple times to get warm with it and now I love it, in my opinion it's not a "dumb" Song. LDA is amazing, Hand it over is calm political statement with a nice 70's Touch and "Me and Michael" is a joke song that, along with the video, is satire of MGMT's career and their former aversion of creating catchy pop songs. Btw it has always been their song, they let the asian band perform it to jokefully pretend that they stole it. There are flaws, nothing's perfect, but they are not as superficial as the ones you pointed out.

It reminds me of the success of Nirvana in a weird way. Bear with me. I don't think Kurt Cobain or anybody really who ever gets just a tidal wave of nothing but success, money and critical acclaim and it happens like literally overnight ever truly expects that to happen. Eventually you become a slave to your own success. And it's also very likely that by the time they realized what they had truly signed up for with a major record deal, suddenly it doesn't matter if you feel like performing or traveling anymore. Suddenly it doesn't matter if you don't feel like playing a certain song, or acting like you enjoy it. Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, they never intended to get as famous as they did and I feel like that's the same thing with MGMT. Sometimes it just happens that way and then next thing you know you aren't in control of your lives or career anymore and I can only imagine the pressure they must feel. And this entire idea they wrote some of the best pop songs of the last decade "as a joke" is something that would be lost on 90% of their fans who can't imagine they did THAT on accident.

I was at a festival in San marcos and it was so true what he's saying. Everyone there were only there for the big 3. As soon as 2 of those songs were played and they started with other songs from the newer albums everyone started walking to the other stage for cage the elephant. It was extremely disrespectful in my opinion. The people didn't even give there new music a chance. It was sad for them to be like ok we'll play the song kids and most started to come back. It was also sad to see that most of them were literally there for those few songs and not the band. I stayed for the whole show and still worked my way into front row of the next stage where Cage the Elephant was playing. Even though Cage the Elephant are really popular and one of my favorite bands so was MGMT. It shocked me to see all those people leave so early just because they weren't playing they're final big hit Kids. You could tell it upset the band and rightfully so imo I was irritated as well.

If anyone has seen MGMT live, you'd know why they want to alienate themselves from their audience. The people who go to their shows fucking SUCK. People like me, who are genuine fans who just want to go and enjoy their music, get shoved and pushed around by frat bros acting like they own the place, who scream "PLAY KIDS" over and over again, even over the music as they beautifully play their better songs. I remember having a bucket list item checked off as I was finally witnessing the glory of Siberian Breaks live, only to have that moment ruined by a douchebag next to me threatening to punch me in the face because I happened to physically exist in the space next to him (btw I was there first, we got there an hour beforehand and this dude just tried to muscle his way to the front 5 minutes before the show). I genuinely think MGMT will continue to get more and more obscure until they've finally shaken themselves free from the army of douchebags that insist they play Kids at every show.

BUT they're making new music so if / when they go on tour again its to a crowd of fans, not of pushy assholes (and im sorry you got threatened i would literally be so fucking upset, i hope the rest of the show went well at least)

I'm one of those people guilty of only listening to their hits and never really delving deeper into their discography, but this video really leans on the idea that bands have to make hits (and do it consistently) if they want to have and keep fans. The last few minutes of the video I was really just thinking "But are they enjoying it?" If they aren't enjoying the music they're making, they're making it for everybody else, it takes it away from them. I don't think it's fair to expect someone to craft hits specifically for fans that only want that kind of music if it means rejecting the things they are creatively drawn to and enjoy making. They're not alienating anyone by making the music they want to make, they're hoping to cater to the fans that understand their true style.

Salutations 0_o Their songs will attract fans that become loyal to them. Niche artists aren’t uncommon nowadays, being praised for their exclusivity and local feel. This results in bands being a lot more organic, less willing to cater and pander to the masses but rather want to please themselves and their fans as a whole by doing what they love. A lot of these (I hate the word “indie”) alternative, less popular artists are starting to rise up and gain a more mainstream following.

Citing Gotye in the video is actually an interesting choice. I believe he wrote Somebody That I Used To Know as his out-right attempt at a radio-friendly song, similar to MGMT and their early hits. And they were both obviously very good at it.

Middle 8 Making Mirrors is great. His previous album Like Drawing Blood is even better. It's basically plunderphonics, constructed mostly from hundreds of samples from old vinyl records. Don't quote me on this (because I can't find the source right now) but I think at one point his computer crashed and he lost everything, including all the samples he'd found, and had to start the whole thing over again. Gotye is totally overshadowed by his one hit and is actually very interesting and talented. Why it was such a cool comparison to draw.

Katzen König I don't think that song is actually a cover, that was just a story they made up, making fun of pop music how a lot of songs on the radio are just covers or borrowed lyrics and beats from other songs. MGMT is always making fun of fame and pop culture. Even one of their "hit" songs Time to Pretend, look at the lyrics, they are making a mockery of being famous. That being said, I like almost every MGMT song, minus some on the self-titled album, some are just too awkward sounding. Tame Impala and Glass Animals make somewhat similar music, maybe it's just not your taste, but it's mine!

I found it a torture to listen to the album twice the whole way through, because of how generic the song structures were.
