@Proxima Centauri I don't get it myself. They are serious musicians, and they must know that what they are doing is not an evolution. It's like they're trying hard now not to be taken seriously. It may be a finger to the critics that panned them even when they had some self respect, but all it is, is a Fk U to us fans that have been with them from the beginning. OK, there is always at least one or 2 tracks that I like on every album after Viva, Charlie Brown, for example, or the trifecta on Ghost Stories of Magic, Midnite and Oceans, and Headful of Dreams did lend itself to a phenomenal live show, but fkn BTS.!? Coldplay from the Parachutes/AROBTTH days would've swallowed their own faecal matter before designing yo peddle in it.

To be honest everyday life is the best album they have had since rush of blood to the head the rest I do feel is generic but parachutes rush of blood to the head and everyday life are so personal and magical And with their new album being probably I feel the worst one they have ever had relying on featuring other artists and with some songs straight up not even being considered worth the effort to get a name just plain symbols Coldplay is no longer the same is that a bad thing? Not always but With Coldplay I feel that they have devolved overtime if they continue down the road they’re on Then I feel that everyday life might be the last good album in my opinion

(A number of songs were eerily similar to ones off an album released in mexico in the 80's with viva la vida existing almost verbatim but originally played on an acoustic guitar instead of a string section) Sadly I can't remember the name of the band they were accused of ripping off of and it was never proven (however suspicions did rise again when they released every color is a waterfall which happened to have the exact same melody and harmony as another track on that same record) I remember being handedly convinced that they'd at the least heard and been inspired by this record, after listening to it myself, and was still a fan regardless but I do wonder if those accusations might have affected things as well

My dad loves coldaply, and ever since I was a kid, he would play their songs in the car, be it for 15 minute trips to the supermarket or days on end when we went for a long trip. Child me was happy, happier than I've ever been in my life, and that pure happiness and adoration for life and new experiences is what I associate with Coldplay songs. I grew up to be an even bigger fan than my dad, and every single album, every song means something to me, most connected to fuzzy memories from my childhood. They're still my favourite, and I haven't ever been disappointed, because they try and do something new every time the release an album. I remember when my parents got divorced and my dad and I lost that connection with him for a while, so we had to rebuild our relationship from ground up when I was a teenager. The joy I felt when he came over to see me one day and we sat down to watch the video for 'Up and Up' together on the day of it's release.. Knowing that my dad enjoys a song so hopeful and happy, I felt safer and more comfy in my own hopes. I'm 20 now, and life's put me through the grater (I am ukrainian if that helps you piece anything together), and Coldplay songs still cheer me up or let me enjoy my melancholy. I've come to associate 'Yellow' with my boyfriend, too, so Coldplay never really leaves my life. Their music is just so meaningful to me, even if the lyrics are a little silly at times.

Ghost Stories is actually one of my favourite Coldplay albums. I like the simplicity of Chris Martin's lyrics, and I usually enjoy complicated and intricate storytelling in music. In the song 'Magic', the simplicity really lends to the emotions. Sometimes we don't have the words to express the overwhelming feelings of love or grief that we experience. I feel like his writing and delivery really show the cocktail of emotions he must have been feeling at the time. It feels honest.

'A Sky Full Of Stars' plays an important role in the album and has a natural part of the wider record - with the prior track flowing into it perfectly. I genuinely think Viva La Vida or Death & All His Friends is one of the best albums of the 21st Century, and for me, definitely the best pop album of the 21st Century. It's such a visceral, sublime and utmost beautiful record - reletentlessly triumphant to say the least with an uplifting and enriching conceptual theme and exploration. I wholeheartedly think, regardless of their downfall in quality recently, Coldplay is extremely overhated by pretentious music nerds and critics - but hey, as George Lucas said, critics and fans tend to know nothing about art.

Tbh their more recent pop hits from the past ten years irritate me the most. It’s not that they make bad music; most of their music is actually very catchy and beautiful. I really love Yellow & Don’t Panic, and Viva La Vida of course is an amazing song in its own right. But even their older stuff is still corny britpop, while being backed up with ingenuity and great instrumentals. Still, I do like some of their newer stuff - Adventure of a Lifetime, despite the music video, actually is a super catchy song. I’ve kinda wrote them off mostly cause after listening to Parachutes, I didn’t think i’d like the rest of their music. Esp. cause the snippets i’ve listened to from their other albums didn’t enthrall me. But this video has made me reconsider taking a chance with their discography.

Coldplay’s story basically encapsulates what every band faces at one point or another: if you don’t experiment or broaden your style, people will say all your songs sound the same and are not evolving and boring, if you change, people will say they miss the old sound and you’re a sell-out. A rush of blood to the head is my favourite record of theirs, and I definitely felt their stagnation through the years. I honestly skipped Everyday Life. Think I might go listen to it now :)

  • @MrShahid0072

The strokes with their new album are a good example of how a band should renovate their sound and still sound fuckin amazing. Any band can change their sound for the sake of changing the sound. Radiohead also are a good example of constant sound change while maintaining the quality and yet sounding quintessentially Radiohead. Coldplay definitely changed their sound but after their fourth album they sounded like a completely different band that had nothing to do with what Coldplay was for those first four records. A lot of old fans felt like that's not Coldplay anymore. But yes all of this is because we imposed Coldplay to sound a particular way and we felt we were cheated but in the end, it's for Chris Martin and the Co. to deicide what Coldplay is. I am sure they have their reasons for taking those directions that they did. P.S. trouble in town is a great song on that album. You should definitely check it out.

Go and listen to their newest albums in FULL and not just what they play on the radio. The whole Ghost Stories album (aside from a sky full of stars) and the Everyday Life album (especially the song Arabesque) are all examples of 'non-mainstream' sound. People hate an artist's music just from the surface level radio play. Trust me they are probably the most experimental musicians in the industry rn, you won't get just one sound.

Which there is nothing wrong if he doesn't like all of their tracks because who does? I like some of them but just because I don't like all doesn't mean they are a failure. Music is art and that's subjective. Besides sales can be chalked up to many things like the rise of digital music streaming services most of us have a subscription with a music service we don't specifically buy physical albums anymore, why not chalk it up to that or other creative reasons. And then the authors says random shit like "what's left of the fanbase" what in the fuck is he talking about and where is he getting this information? It's not like the "few" that like Coldplay got huddled up and gave him an opinion. This video is so ridiculous honestly

It also talks about what happened to music in general. Selling less and less copies, getting lost in the production, identity crisis. That’s what happened to music during last years. Musicians rarely sound like just one thing today. They seem to try to keep up with TikTok trends. All I have for Coldplay is respect.

The problem is that people just hear Coldplay, and they automatically go "Coldplay = bad". First 3 albums from them are really good, with 4th Viva la Vida being they're best by my opinion. Then people just started hating them, only because they did really "poppy" and safe albums. I admit it was a shame, because I know that they can do so much more then mainstream music, but I still enjoy Mylo, Ghost Stories and AHFD. And now they release Everyday Life, no one talks about, even when it's the album most similar to Viva, which people want. But they just ignore it, and when they saw that it's nominated for the album of the year, they just start talking shit again, when they surely didn't even heard the album. And I would even mind if it won the award, because "folklore" and "future nostalgia" are the only nominees in that category which could get the award. Every single other nominee in that category is trash. (This years Grammy's suck btw in my very "original" opinion)

Because i believe Jacob Collier's 'Djesse Vol.3' is well worth the nomination and is certainly not trash since Jacob is a genius composer & arranger. This does not mean for a minute that i dispute Coldplay's inclusion since i personally loved Everyday Life myself but yes, i can sadly say i don't believe it can win simply based on this polarising popularity amongst critics, I personally think it'll go to Future Nostalgia, though i wouldnt be suprised if Taylor's crew have it fixed on

Feel like I’m probably Coldplay’s ideal fan, in that I both wore out my Parachutes CD back in 2000 AND still love their modern releases as well. I’ve heard a lot of people mention this trope of being ‘ashamed’ or ‘embarrassed’ to be a Coldplay fan but I think that viewpoint says more about the fan than the band. Like, I’m sad for people if they care more about what strangers might think about their music taste than they care about just enjoying things they like. Also, every single one of those other bands you listed (Radiohead, Bon Iver etc) started out super strong but have gradually disappeared up their own arses a little bit, just like Coldplay, so I don’t see them as being much different, just less widely successful.

Love these videos. My take on this: as an artist who is growing, you don't learn if you don't work on your problems, which are usually pointed out by your audience. But at the same time, as an artist who needs to sell to an audience: if you listen to everything your audience says and try to "obey", you'll inevitably lose your identity while learning that you can't please everyone.

I like your take, and I’m not here to see if it’s right or wrong. But I’ll add a little something and maybe you can give me some feedback. I adore their first albums and I really like their fourth album, their fifth album was OK at points and then it started to really fall apart, I’m amazed they got that far with so many masterpieces, but I think the thing that’s so hard is that when you’re Chris Martin and you’re writing songs as a single guy music school student I was just falling in love with a girl and still has all the youthful hormones running through his body and everything, it might be easier to tap into certain feelings of love and sort of deeper things that they were able to impart. At some point they become sort of a product where their expectations of excellence, think of Apple for instance, they kind of produce the same stuff but it’s lightly upgraded but it’s not necessarily always better etc. maybe not the best example but I guess what I’m getting at is once you’re of a zillionaire who can have any woman in the audience you want, your life is probably stressful like everybody else is at times but it’s a lot easier than everybody else’s, and maybe you’ve become a little jaded with certain aspects of romance etc. maybe it just gets a little harder to sincerely tap into life experiences then when you were young and those hormones were running through your veins etc. I wonder what you think about something like this. In Coldplays case especially, and this is coming from a guy who seen 25 Coldplay concerts live across the world give or take one or two or three, I feel like once their life was a charmed life, there’s less to draw on if you know what I mean. And they more than many other bands that are these super bands that last for many years really rely on a lot of emotion.

Oh and one more critical fact and I only watched five minutes of this video so I don’t know what he’s about to say, I know for a fact that I have known for about 8 years now which is a pretty long time that Chris Martin is slowly losing his voice more so than someone in his vocal range at his age. He does what he can, when I saw him on the Howard Stern show he was rubbing his uvula in the back of his throat with a special concoction of oils, but the bottom line is he can’t hit the notes anymore which was illustrated by when the city of Chicago made him play the song Amsterdam on the second day of back to back gigs, via petition (The band had not played that classic song live for so long that at that point everybody in the world love seeing them live really wanted to hear it from them. Martin said it has to do with personal feelings but it was BS) if I’m not mistaken, and because they’re good fellows Coldplay Play went for it, and it was a mess, Martin couldn’t hit the notes, and it revealed what we all knew which is that they don’t play that song live anymore not because he doesn’t feel that way about whatever bullshit, but because he can’t hit those notes anymore, thus limiting him as an artist (which makes me quite sad,) but at least there’s so much amazing stuff recorded. But, for all his incredible gifts, unfortunately Martin was not born with like a Freddie Mercury-sequel for once in a lifetime range and longevity of the vocal cords, which I think people don’t give enough credence to

@@mr.z1992 i like this. And i think there's a lot of truth to it. I would say it must be really challenging to stay together as a band for a very long time and still make relevant, interesting music after such a period. On the one hand, you want to keep doing what you- and presumably your biggest fans- enjoy, but then people may get sick of it. On the other hand, you try to evolve with the times too much, and suddenly you've sold out. I think Muse is an interesting example of a band that's stayed together for ages and their way of staying relevant was continued growth and evolution. Iron maiden is an example of the opposite

@@artbymiwsher Well said! I adore muse and I think that you picked maybe the perfect example in the modern day of a band that can evolve and stay unique. I’ve also seen an over a dozen Muse shows all over the country (never in Europe unfortunately) but some of the reasons I think they’re so unique besides raw talent is their way more aggressive use of more ‘electronic’ sounds which give artists a much much broader canvas to play with, and the songs obviously have this unique rock opera song and live I notice Matt often stays in a safe sort of range with a falsetto quality that I think coupled Bellamy’s incredibly gifted vocal range/chords will have them knocking it out of the park for a long time. Also, you look at him and some of them and their lives just seem a little bit more edgy than Coldplays. Matt definitely has a “type“ of chick or at least went through a phase that will keep those kind of crazy hormones going that I was talking about. Take for instance the example of Chris Martin, divorcing Gwyneth Paltrow, which they handled in a way that was so extremely amicable that I frankly found it a little odd (they wouldn’t use the word “divorce,” presumably for the kids, [and I heard it was a pretty open relationship,] and instead celebrated it with a ceremony for their “Conscious Uncoupling” - which doesn’t exactly sound like the kind of grist for a musicians mill that, say, Bellamy’s rather short-lived marriage and tumultuous breakup with notorious minx Kate Hudson, which lead to what I find to be one of the greatest “fuck my ex” anthems ever with their song “Dead Inside” lol) Cheers!

i first heard them when they released Mylo Xyloto, i was 15 years old so the pop-ish side of it was fitting to my liking, then i got all the older albums and i completely fell in love with them, becoming my favourite band for a good while. I kept listening to them but it reached to a point that every album they released just was not hitting like that anymore, it’s a shame, really, i still cherish those albums but if i ever want to go to a concert im damn sure i will not know a single lyric of the new ones 😅 i wondered if it might just be me that stop liking them or what happened! haha thank you for the great video!

X&Y is an underrated album; at the time it seemed like it was little more than Rush of Blood without the acoustic sections, but in fact they were already trying new things, such as building songs around a sample (Talk), and they did all this in full knowledge that it would be played in stadiums. From that point on no two Coldplay albums sound the same, even if they don’t quite hit the mark every time.

Coldplay could make a fucking incredible shoegaze-esque pop album.
