Sometime within the last 15 years you’ve probably found yourself belting out The Killer’s Mr. Brightside.
The adored indie-anthem assisted The Killers in becoming one of the most successful rock bands of the 21st century all the while still managing to hold its own in 2018. It only ever peaked at number ten on the UK singles chart, but get this, since it’s reissue in 2004 it’s rarely ever left those very same charts -- appearing in the top 100 singles every year since. In fact the track is spending it’s 204th week on the chart as I speak.
In 2005, it was the sixth most downloaded song on iTunes. It’s now the 12th most downloaded rock track in the UK ever. Last.fm revealed that it was the most listened to track since the launch of their online music service with more than 12 million plays and counting. Mr. Brightside is the most streamed song of any track released before 2010. Averaging nearly a million plays per week across all major streaming platforms. Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, VH1 and countless others have called it one of the best songs of the decade. Not bad for a band’s first song.
The Killers have never not played that song live. That’s not a hyperbole, it’s the truth. They’ve literally never played a gig without playing Mr. Brightside. Flowers himself isn’t bored of singing it. And somehow it has stood the test of time while it’s popularity is showing no signs of dwindling.
So what is it about Mr. Brightside that has listeners returning a decade and a half later?
Let’s take a look at THE LEGACY OF MR. BRIGHTSIDE
-------------------------------
Who wrote/sings Mr. Brightside?
The Killers
How old is Mr. Brightside?
Approximately 15 years old now.
When did Mr. Brightside come out?
Mr. Brightside premiered on BBC Radio 1 in 2003 and was re-released in 2004 by Island Def Jam Records.
Which album is Mr. Brightside on?
The KIller’s debut Hot Fuss.
What does Mr. Brightside mean? What is Mr. Brightside about?
The track is focuses on an unfaithful lover and ultimately moving on from the failed relationship.
How long has Mr. Brightside been in the charts?
Mr. Brightside is spending its 15th year on the UK Top 100 Singles Chart. While it has left the charts, it manages to find its way back year after year.

Added though the song here in the UK is such a strange but welcome phenomenon. I rarely don't hear it being played in a club even if the music in that club isn't rock and pop, it somehow makes an appearance either as a remix or just as the song itself (it gets the crowd going, singing along, might be one of the few songs where the majority of people will know the lyrics). Its somehow transcended its genre as well, with people who may not listen to indie rock knowing every word of the song. It's fucking widespread here haha. I know a lot of my friends and myself included thought that the Killers were a British band, they've really captured the Indie-Brit-Rock-Pop sound that most successful British rock acts have adopted to varying degrees since Oasis.

While Mr.Brightside has a sort of hopefulness the phrase and tone of the line "Cause I'm Mr. Brightside" feels more like a depressed acceptance that the relationship is over, which is perfect for the story of the song. Some of the best stories end acknowledging where it all began while showing how things have changed. Mr. Brightside acknowledges the heartbreak that engaged at the start of the song and laces it with sad acceptance, giving the listener a one two punch of emotion. If it weren't for this, I don't believe the climax would be as impactful as it's current form and the song may not have been as popular. It gives the song an undertone of denial as the last wails of "I never" belt out over the crashes of the hithat, ending the song with a desperate confusion of why someone would do that, esspecially when he never did anything wrong. The only resort is be "Mr. Brightside" not because you can see the hope for a better relationship but so your not stuck in the depressive pit of 'why'.

I disagree with the idea that it's hopeful; I think a big reason it's popular is purely because it's ironically hopeful. I think the whole point of the chorus is Flowers basically laughing away calling himself "Mr. Brightside" when really he's spent the last minute and a half essentially in agony imaging every detail of what his lover did when she cheated on him. Irony and ironic humor is a big part of this generation, I just think they marketed on that.

If you watch a couple videos from the Day & Age era you can see that he really doesn't like when people are seated or inactive during shows lol (Santa Barbara 2009... classic video). But yeah for sure it's an exception (well I hope), I especially love the 50/50 version they're doing live these days; they're playing the Jacques Lu Cont remix for the first half, then the album version on the second half. I'm 35 now. I've loved it all these years and continue to follow The Killers music career, no matter how much their sound changes, there are still very obvious references both in style and sound that reflect Hot Fuss. TBF emo is still being played. MCR sold out in minutes for their return show tickets. So it's not a coincidence that Mr Brightside is still topping the charts. 'coming out of my cage' is my phrase getting me through lockdown as well as 'We'll carry on' Welcome to the Black Parade, MCR and Florence and the machine, "Dog days are over". Again very iconic songs.

This song will never get old, it's timeless. Hot Fuss has so many good tracks. The nostalgia and regret of love missed out on represented in "Smile like you mean it" gives me the feels: "And someone is calling my name...from the back of the restaurant, And someone is playing a game...in the house that I grew up in, And someone will drive her around...down the same streets that I did... On the same streets that i did... Smile like you mean it."

If any of you ever get the chance to see The Killers live, do it. The energy and the performance they give is once in a life time. The whole crowd erupts with emotion at every song. You can feel the heartbreaks, the optimism, the vigor of youth, the wisdom of age. When Mr. Brightside plays everyone goes berserk. Imagine everyone around you belting the lyrics without care about being off key or looking stupid. It's just a bunch of us getting to share that fleeting genuine moment together in this world where we are so connected yet so distant. I never had a favorite band until I found The Killers.

5:07 - You begin talking about /why/ Mr Brightside is still on top of the charts. 6:00 - Content is over This is why I have such a hard time with your channel: you pick topics that are very interesting to me, you do significant, good research, but your videos end up being like maybe an 85-15 split research and conclusion. The conclusion's what I'm watching for, baby! If you only have like, three sentences to say on a subject, I question the necessity of an entire video devoted to them. That said, I generally like you and would like to see you improve. So, uh, that's my thoughts on this.
