What happened to Hunter Mahan? | Golf Stories
Спорт
At one point, Hunter Mahan was the only player to make every Tour Championship during the FedEx Cup era. As soon as he turned pro from the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s, he was a consistent force on tour racking up half a dozen wins and rising to as high as 4th in the world rankings. The only thing missing was a major win, and it seemed it was only a matter of time before he got one. However, in the past 5 seasons, his game and consistency has dropped off significantly.

Golf is such a tough game. These pros maintain such a high level of play for so long, it’s crazy to be that sharp all the time.
Seeing these videos certainly makes you appreciate the sustained brilliance of Tiger, Jack and others. Lots of guys can get hot for a couple years but dominating the sport for 10+ years is what legends are made of.

I used to work for PING, and worked with Hunter on the PGA Tour, He is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. he is very dedicated to his game, and along with his , At the time Caddy, " John Woods " he worked very hard at his profession. He deserves so much more than he has received. I do however think that Hunter got caught up in the Limelight and Fame, which caused him to lose focus on his game. I believe that this is as well as his family issues may have contributed to his struggles with golf. He is still to this day a fantastic golfer and one hell of a Man! I wish all the best for Hunter and his Family!
Funny how Hunter had his best years ever under Foley yet some people find it easier to slander someone for a punch line rather than take 30 seconds to do a simple google search. Justin Rose recently parted with Foley after 11 years and I don't want to waste time talking about everything Rose did in those 11 years. You know, number 1 in the world, Olympic Gold..blah , blah, blah. Tour pros have a short memory once their game falls apart and the hardest person to blame is the one in the mirror, so the coach becomes the redheaded stepchild and gets the beating.
Everybody is being so kind in their responses. The reason is the same in all sports. NFL, NBA, MLB, Etc.... Rewarded earl in your career with untold riches and motivation goes out the window. Endorsement contracts, new found wealth takes the desire out of so many amazing athletes. That's why the greats in each of the sports today are to be cherished. They still love to compete.
Glad someone finally made a video about this. Its crossed my mind a few times as to what the hell happened to this guy.
Another insightful video into the life of a top golfer. Thank you so much. Life can be such a challenge sometimes and it is a reminder that these famous people are just human after all and have experiences to test their resilience just like normal people do. We just wish them well, truly. Managing pressure and expectation is just as important as honing golf skills. A tough regime indeed. I can appreciate that some younger players just can’t maintain ⭐️🇿🇦
I played golf with him when we were 14 years old. Buffalo creek in Rockwall, TX. In a tournament he shot 30 on the front 9. It was the craziest thing I’d ever seen. He did shoot 40 on the back and was in tears but I shot 78 and thought I was hot stuff. I was not.
After he came down on himself after blaming himself for Ryder cup he was never the same. With rare exception the whole tour changes every 5 years.
Great video keep up the good work

This reminds me of David Duval. After winning the British Open all of the sudden his driver seemed to be wayward which affected the rest of his game. I think Mahan's case might not be because of technicality alone but might start from there. Confidence is really important in golf game.

Things change. Your life, your body, your bank, your desire, everything. A lot of golfers lose their game at times. Most times it comes back around and once in a while it never does.
Hunter has made a mint .. and is hopefully enjoying life and family at the moment ... when or if he feels the need to get back in the game I am sure he will set his mind to it and succeed

Really like Hunter, but with confidence problems and the quality and quantity of really good players now it will be really tough for him to come back. I hope I am wrong and wish him well
an old golf adage is that golf is 90% mental so I would suggest starting there and determining where in his problems lie. he certainly has the talent to deal with them once "they" are determined.
Bro playing good golf while having personal issues is so tough. hope he continues to keep fighting.
I think Hunter will be back on tour sometime. Just get rid of the yips and enjoy life hopefully he's saved some of the 30M he's made on tour, sadly since 2016 that only adds up to a little more than a million bucks, so this has been going on for a few years. he's only 38, plenty of time. Sometimes golfers get caught up with analysis of their swing if their form dips and then they get stuck. It looked like Hunter was thinking way too much instead of just enjoying playing. Paralysis by Analysis.

@anaks247
3 жыл бұрын
Indeed. I mentioned it briefly at 5:03, but didn't get too much into the match specifically.
Is Hunter the one I heard of who hits down on the ball with his driver, but hits it well. He then tried to learn to hit up on the ball with his driver and it made him spray the ball everywhere. He finally went back to his own technique. If that is him, I wonder if that screwed up his swing.
Could you do nick Watney?
Funny......l was just thinking the same thing and it popped up in my feed.
Had a good run like most top golfers do. But when the magic goes the party's over.
All we know is what is on your video which is really good. I think he can come back and keep playing for a living. When stuff like this happens to guys, I just think you have to say, "Go talk to David Duval. Cripe, I don't know what happened" Play at this level can be so fleeting. If it doesn't come back around, your gone. I suppose worse things can happen to people

That's two words
With that record in almost any other career he would be considered a great success, the expectations put on players by the media is frequently absurd,a win means they are the next hot thing to take the golfing world by storm and the list of those tipped for stardom who never made it would be enormous. Nick Watney was another. We see the glamorous side of pro golf rather than the travelling, media sessions, hotel rooms, missing family and grinding it out on the practice ground.
Out of the thousands of nearly magical men and women who can play golf at a tour level, there has to be at least a small percentage of them whose ball-striking is natural and not at all something over which they have any sort of conscious control. It was honed by some basice pointers and lots and lots of repetition, rather than some sort of construct put together by trainers or self-instruction as to how to trun, pivot, move the arms, wrists and hands. Ian Baker-Fince explained his shocking downfall as simply waking up one day and no longer being able to hit a golf ball straight, and having not a clue as to why, or how to fix it. We all have swing thoughts in our heads to keep us on the straight and narrow, and chances are we all have played our best gold on days we found those swing thoughts to be unnecessary. There isn't much mystery here with Hunter. He just stopped naturally doing something within his swing which he had always previously done without thinking about it. The gap between #4 in the world and number #900 is about two strokes per average round. It doesn't take much to cause a player to drop off the world golf radar screen.
A good report , I would love to see him get back in form.
A lot of golfers come and go. They have a period when they are hot and then their game drops a level. Only the greats stay around for a long time. There have been a countless number of pro golfers where this has happened. Think of all the players who have won or nearly won majors and then their game has dropped off completely. Hunter was probably a golfer in that category. Had his 15 minutes of fame then his form drops and the PGA tour is so competitive with new fresh keen pro golfers coming through every year, your form only has to drop a little bit and you start missing the cut and losing your card.
In a strange way Hunters struggles gives comfort to amateurs. If someone as talented and successful as him can lose form and confidence and hit poor shots then we shouldn't expect to find the game easy or be consistent.
He's a dude. My favourite swing! Bit of a form slump which every player has followed by a major family issue. It would be hard to concentrate and be free enough to practice well then play well. Hopefully everything works out personally for him

While Hunter is a great guy and can and should look back at what he's achieved with tremendous pride, I think he won't make any sustained comeback, i.e. be a regular inside the top 50. I'm thinking of a guy like IBF (Ian Baker-Finch). He was a great player and back in the day had putting stats to rival the very greatest putters in the game's history. But shortly after IBF won his only major, the Open in '92, he suffered a tremendous loss in confidence and that was it for him. I think Hunter will, unfortunately, suffer the same fate. Standing on the range, all the top players can hit all the shots at will. It's the rarest of people like Tiger who can do it when they're under the most pressure and it counts.
He is a family man.

What's happened to Hunter Mahan has probably happened to as many top tier players as the number who have somehow managed to avoid it. Playing and then staying at the very highest level of golf is very difficult. Ask, for example: Bob Lunn, Jerry Heard, Bill Rogers, Jerry Pate, Ian Baker Finch, Jodie Mudd, Jim Gallagher, Jesper Parnevik, David Duval, Trevor Immelman, Anthony Kim, Luke Donald . . . I could go on but I think the point is made.
Hunter, go back to how you played golf in college, forget these coaches, they will ruin you. Practice your short game 70 percent of the time, get your confidence back. Concentration and confidence go hand in hand, you can't play one with out the ohter.
Interesting. I think we can all relate to not having it anymore. No matter what the reason.
Hunter lost his game like many pros have done over the years. Sometimes they're achieve a pinnacle and there is nowhere to go but down. Longevity in golf is never guaranteed. It is a cruel sport at the professional level.
Even with a perfectly on plane swing like that, golf can be cruel. Its not impossible for your swing to be cold for a decade.

Henry, Tim Clark. and Ian Poulter, were great to watch whole Tiger, and Phil were still dominant. the PGA has become boring to watch. Nike became a major brand when Tiger played well, and petered out when he played less. No other player now has that same appeal. The players have become boring. Where are the Arnies Armies?
