What Happened To Dell?

Since its 1984 launch in Michael Dell's dorm , Dell has evolved from a PC maker to a $90 billion in revenue and services in storage, servers, cloud infrastructure and data security. Since then, CEO, Michael Dell has taken his company public, private and then public again as it tried to keep up with changing consumer and business customer needs.
Dell's first IPO happened in 1988 when “Dell Computer Corp.” went public at $8.50 a share with a market capitalization of $85 million. In 1992, Michael Dell became the youngest Fortune 500 CEO at 27. By 2001, Dell had overtaken Compaq as the world’s largest PC maker.
But by 2013, demand for PCs stalled as tablets and smartphones became more popular. Later that year, Michael Dell took the company private. In 2015, Dell purchased data storage company EMC, a deal that still stands as the largest technology acquisition of all time. In 2018, Dell returned to the public markets as Dell Technologies.

My uncle started working as a security guard in a Dell factory and he was intrigued and because obsessed with the computers. He then started learning about computing in his spare time and ended up getting promoted to the assembly line in the same factory. He then climbed the promotion ladders and ended up getting a mega promotion to a job in Texas. It really shows how you can start off small and follow your dreams.

Lazy ass HP engineers never update their drivers, that’s why they are prone to crash problems. That’s what happened to my 2 year old laptop, my Nvidia HP driver keeps on freezing and crashing Windows 10. After 1 year of purchasing the laptop HP finally updated the Nvidia driver, that solved the problem. Now it is freezing and crashing my laptop again, because HP haven’t updated the driver to be compatible with the new Windows 10 build. I can’t use the driver from Nvidia, because HP computers comes with HP proprietary motherboards. You can use the generic Nvidia drivers, but it will crash your system constantly. I know because I tried it before. After this laptop I am switch to Dell or Apple, I will never buy HP’s junk again.

@@dzonikg Lenovo is the worst Laptop company I've ever had, both of their laptops (original & replacement) had serious build quality issues, misplaced speaker, case defects, and the worst part is that they lied to me and refused to refund me. I had to get my credit card company involved so that they could refund me. After 6 months of fighting with them non-stop, they ended up "refunding" me with a prepaid Lenovo card with monthly fees, activation fees, and it cannot be transferred to any account. It could only be used for places that accept the prepaid card.

The only configuration on Dell's page that allows me as much RAM as this seven years old one has is the Alien Ware stuff for ridiculous high prices. The reason why I shifted in the first place was that dell wasn't offering the i7 series with six cores (=> Core i7-3930K, Q4/2011) back then, but to me it was the utter acceptable minimum, and hence I bought me a complete custom design. I was two or three times and their page and was almost enrage with the poor offers. Crap even the Chinese would refuse to sell.

That's true but unfortunately personal computers are down to mobile workers. And mobile phones are the top reason the average PC user stick with the modern amenities - for social media and games. But Dell is strong within the DC and Enterprise market. I compete with them daily. :)

I'd agree but it's also for the better Imo. The home PC is dying off, laptops are the thing as well as phones. Of course I'm not including gaming computers even though they're in that space too. Alienware I owned by Dell let's not forget.

Consumers want simply sealed disposable gadgets. Dell doesn't do sealed or disposable, and neither do the IT professionals they cater to nowadays.

I still have two Dells. A Dimension E521 and an XPS M1530. Both still working pretty well after updating their HDDs to SSDs. Also love their older keyboards, I bought a whole bunch of them because they are so nice to type on and they are cheap

Agreed. Dell keyboards from the end of the cream-colored computer era to the first 5 yrs or so of the black-colored era are superb and built like tanks. I'm sure my fingers will break before my old Dell keyboards will.

I bought 3 laptops and a desktop pc from Dell in the past 12 years. I think I'm a pretty savvy shopper. Every time I go shopping and do comparison they always come on top in my list. And their PC's were always reliable so far. Dell is like Toyota in the pc world

The first time I bought a Dell laptop was in 2005. When I finally had to replace it around 2013, I naturally got another Dell. It's not just that they're powerful and affordable, they are also durable. My laptops get regularly chucked in backpacks or carrying cases, shoved under the seat in airplanes, occasionally knocked to the ground by dogs, etc. - and no, I do not have the military spec models. Could I get an Acer for less? Maybe. Is it going to last me as long as a Dell? Not from what I've seen.

I like them. Reliable, upgradeable, serviceable, lasting pieces of equipment. My Latitude is my breadwinner, so yeah, go Dell, like your stuff works well. There is much value in their older products, I enjoy hunting for deals on somewhat older Dell destktops and turning them into light gaming PC-s or using them for other home projects.
