What Happened To Buju Banton? | Controversial Songs, His Rastafari Faith & a 10 Year Prison Sentence

Ойын-сауық

In the ‘90s, Buju Banton emerged as one of the most popular reggae dancehall artists. Some of his songs though, drew substantial criticism for their offensive lyrics. Over the years, Buju remained a high-profile star and branched out using a variety of elements including R&B, hip-hop, and folk. Then, a conviction on drug trafficking charges in the U.S. curtailed his career for the better part of a decade and had people wondering if he would ever get the chance to dominate the music charts again.

As a daughter of a Jamaican man, I have no idea why it's acceptable for them to have so many children. They also favor sons over their daughters, at least that was true for my Jamaican father. He literally ruined my mother's life, as he was married to another woman when my brother and I were conceived. I literally have a hood twin.

As an American man of Haitian descent, I can tell you that Haitian men be on the same BS. I have at least 10 or more siblings, from several different women, in about 4 different countries. Trust me when I tell you, I don't understand why they feel it's acceptable either. Luckily, my mother divorced him before he could do any real damage to her life.

@@HatianHurricane 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 that's for your mother, smart woman. My father's wife never divorced him, and my mother never had a functional relationship thereafter. My brother and I actually lived with my father, his wife and 2 kids, (one the exact same age as me) throughout grade school, for the better schooling system. We were treated so poorly by the wife. She refused to take up her frustration with her cheating husband, but instead took it out on us, the kids. Till this day, after I graduated high school I've never been back to that house. And every year I get a new message on facebook from someone from Jamaica saying how he's their father too. All women.

During the early to mid 90's, I was in my late teens to early 20's. I was growing up in Crown Heights BK. Buju might as well have been a God in BK. During this era, there used to be what was known as sound clashes. This is one DJ set battling another DJ set. One of the biggest sets in Brooklyn was known as "Earth Ruler". One year on Union Street between Troy Ave and Albany Ave, Earth Ruler was DJ at our annual block party. To everyone's shock, because they did it so covertly, Buju just grab the mike in a ninja type fashion because no one knew he was there. Now, there was something we called legal shots where you would be shooting your guns in the air. When Buju grab that mike and everyone realized who it was, no less than about 30 guns went off but they were all legal shots and no one was shot. The party went on without incident. However, that was the last time that block got a permit for a block party!!!
