I suffer from poor circulation and consequently cold hands. I’ve spent time and money looking for warm gloves but when it’s really cold up here in Scotland mitts are the best option for me. My favourites are Buffalo Mitts. They are reasonably priced, light and warm even when wet. The two main problems with them are dexterity and poor grip if using ice axes for climbing. Gloves that I have used successfully are Showa 282 Temres gloves. They are used by fishermen and are cheap to buy - many climbers use them. I also use some Lobster Mitts from Alp Kit especially for cycling. They are a mitt/glove cross offering more warmth than a glove and more dexterity than a mitt. Finally some type of hand warmers are of great benefit to me. Enjoying your channel.

Have used these for years and they can’t be beaten. More expensive now but still good value for money when compared with much more expensive gloves which aren’t as warm if you have really cold hands.

I still use buffalo too. Have mitts and a special 6 shirt

Living and spending much of my time outdoors in the Lakes, Scotland, North Pennines (I'm retired!) the best hand wear are Buffalo mitts....superb... even used them skiing and ski mountaineering...a lot less expensive than many you had there on the table as well! I wouldn't use any that won't go inside the cuff of my jacket.

Exactly re cuffs and jacket Paramo has very wide cuffs As you saw at end I very very recently got the buffalo mitts they look super

I am listening to a stunning audiobook on Shakleton's Expedition... him snd his crew would have loved being equipped with what we are having available nowadays - A TOAST on ALL POLAR EXPLORERS & RESEARCHERS who did not return from their endeavors! I salute each of those!

Brilliant advice Tony. i have used a similar system for a couple of years. I would also recommend Buffalo Mitts for wet and cold weather as stay warm when wet and really easy to get on and off.

I always put on silk linner gloves, easier to get hands in wet gloves. Take a look at workware gloves they are great and cheap

I totally agree with this. I use simple cheap fleece gloves from Decathlon and a pair of their over gloves which are actually mittens. The fleece gloves are less than a fiver and only weigh 24g so I have several pairs and always take two pairs walking. Does me for all conditions I ever experience. I think those of us of a certain age sometimes long for some of the older materials. Some of the original fleece products Polartec made were amazing, but unfortunately the world became obsessed with lighter materials. And yes had that inner coming out when wet issue. Is that the dog behind you on the chair?... I've also found with a lot of expensive gloves with expensive materials like Pertex, you can pay up to and.over £50 and after a few outings they start splitting at seems or get holes in the them really easy. If my cheap Decathlon ones get holes ( which they haven't yet ) they are a fiver to replace.

Sounds a good set up I must one day find a decathlon store none very close but some people swear by them. Like my expensive stuff as one can see 😆 but I'd definitely agree your philosophy is a sound one and yes fleece is a great option and yours sound light too a bonus! My fingers would not get in as you saw later in vid lol very frustrating 😅

i use nevica they are a great ski glove and mountain glove. i never felt any cold or wetness penetrating the glove. try them out think they where only £70 a very good all rounder.@@TonyHobbs

It’s opened my eyes to the world of gloves , I currently use hestra ,but now I have some other things to look at , and the surgical gloves are handy for other things 🤪

Gloves really are bothersome! I have serious trouble keeping my hands warm so I often have to wear mittens. I prefer a rainproof outer shell and use different liners depending on temperature wintertime. A good option for dryer conditions is to have a mitten that opens up and lets you have the use of your fingers. They are warmer than gloves and more versatile than ordinary mittens. They ventilate well too when you are warm. Summertime I usually have a pair of thin gloves made for runners if I need to protect my hands from cold wind or rain. But on a multiday adventure I would bring a waterproof mitten as well. Cold hands could get you killed in the mountains.... I have tried using surgical gloves, but only when taking the tent down in cold and wet conditions. I'm not a huge fan and I cant imagine it would be very comfortable wearing them inside another glove. But that's just me and my very cold hands talking.

I can't imagine it either tbh I think some in very cold it works but yeah I'm not convinced lol the one thing I forgot 😅 as usual forgot one thing at least is the surgical gloves over liner glove putting tent away can work OK for me when I remember. I've never tried those glove mitten combo but you make it sound good so yeah that might help some for sure and absolutely cold hands must be one of the biggest dangers in freezing weather. I'm embarrassed to say I only own 1 pair of gloves 😂 the surgical gloves will help but they are 1 use only because getting the same pair back on is harder than winning the lottery 😅 I work with chemicals so wear them alot for work. Have a good new year mate take it easy.

I think my brain was subjected to some chemicals 😆 🤣 😂 yeah they weren't coming off were they lol I find putting over a light liner glove is ok for cold wet work like putting away a tent they remove ok from liner gloves 😅 thanks for watching to end by sounds of it fab thanks 😊

The over mit is a good system. But I wouldn't take multiple gloves in case one gets wet. Just don't get them went if first place. All these just in casers all add weight to the pack.

Maybe you get away with it But in general that is not advice I ever agree with because if gloves do get wet at least one back up is advisable esp if very cold or in snow unless you have very warm hands (daft to trust that) or are these one nighter type campers on here who say about cold wet hands because they only took one pair got them wet then of course it makes it dramatic for views. But cold wet hands is a dangerous combination. Over mitt definitely good though but in torrential rain and if very cold I'd have more I value fingers over a few hundred extra grams :)

It's good to have different views Tony. My combination is over mit,I pair of the really thin base layer glove( which with the overmit is suitable for most conditions and one pair of thermo loft type mit. When I started years ago,in my return from an outing, I used to weigh all the equipment I never used and it's surprising how the grams build up. It's this practical,experiential approach that has led me to the views I have. But we are all different and I respect your views.

Exactly agree the grams do add up a lot for sure and if it works for you that is great. I've had cold wet hands and it's very unpleasant so a backup dry pair very useful also I like a pair for in camp if cold in sleeping bag. You're probably better at keeping them dry. I used to weigh everything all my early vids had weights everything then thought sod it keep as light as possible generally and enjoy :) great reply thanks

Yep ... never ever get gloves whose inner linings come out with wet hands ... it's bad for you. Mitts are warmer than gloves, things like buffalo mitts are incredibly light, windproof and as such even warm when wet ... I spent many a year winter climbing with wool dachchien mitts and still use them today as back up. Some climbing gloves are good .... but expensive. A pair of polypropylene fell running thinnies are handy to have too in summer/winter and as liners

Tell you what else I have kicking about mitts wise. Some British army issue cold weather ones with the dpm waterproof outer and fibre pile lining. I also use a pair of oddities fleece fingerless gloves but they have a mitt cover that you can fold over to keep warm. They hark back to my time in MR , I could keep my hands warm and then fold the mitt part out of the way if I needed extra dexterity, ropework or doing medic stuff for example
