Great advice Tony on layering systems for winter. For me everything is x-large; a long time since my frame could take a large lol. Oh those were the days! In winter I love mainly to carry my heavy pack in sub zero with just a tee shirt and when stopped for the wild camp start layering.

Hi Tony, I have a soft shell that is fully waterproof, it has a membrane between inner and outer layers, I got it for cycling and it definitely is waterproof, but as you say it's a bit on the heavy side for trekking and baulky to put in daysack, I purchased it from M&S outlet about 17 years ago for £6. Bargain of a lifetime. Regards.Bill.

Polartec neoshell was good but didn't catch on . There is windpro but not wp as seams not sealed Yes yours sounds good back in the day eh lol

The merino is old chocfish not in existence now sadly the Arcteryx wind shirt goes back a good ten years lol notice the odd sizing that one is small the mountain equipment arrow base is large lol Imagine No better not What our kit costs these days though... thanks for watching

Spent most my money on bushcraft brands, thank you Mr Mears. But bought my first Arcteryx product this year, sun hoody, I absolutely love it. You certainly get what you pay for 😅 your also the reason I have a duomid XL on the way. I'm just saving more and buying what I first wanted. Is it much better than the DD XL pyramid the standard duomid that is. I have technically both now, feels wasteful but felt like I was missing something with the DD. Anyway as always thanks for your videos and humour 😂

@MrDancingBishop the DD is shockingly poor vs anything MLD mine is terrible sadly . I did two camps in a DD couple years ago and it did protect me just about bit quality not good build terrible stitching. You'll love the duomid xl I'm about to take it out again soon somewhere cooler than down here. Thanks for lovely comment yup Ray seems top bloke

Hi Tony. U got any experience of the PHD Wafer Ultima K Down Pullover? Thinking of getting one as my 2nd layer over my base layer. Also have u tested a PHD Sigma jacket, its primaloft gold. Thought it would be good for UK conditions

I've not had the sigma unfortunately maybe one day in future I agree it looks great the closest I see is Berghaus MTN Arete jacket I either have that wafer or similar. One I got long ago the other more recently (one with hood (wafer) one without (its the shirt version its ridiculously light and excellent). Its ridiculously costly 😆 but a work of art and good for those little chills outside winter a cool later spring summer evening its nice to pop on .

Plus five probably OK if run hot and save a few grams I'd probably not expect to sit out for hours in plus five tbh as I run cold but for that chill and not expecting it to be hot at minus five 😅 you should be ok with plus five I'm spending on other stuff at mo so trying to be good ish 😆

Yes diet ie less I upped walking only a bit and nothing else. About 4-8km a day basically two local dog walks a day weather permitted.... I don't bother if really cold wet due to Lizzy but that combo rare down south tbh.most days two. One is 3.5km other a bit over 4. Food I skip breakfast at mo have very small lunch like sandwich or very small pasti thing. Then dinner veg meat and 50% ot time pots or rice sometimes I skip the carbs but must admit to liking pots and chips so kinda think just have less food generally daily at home. Camping I probably scoff lol This morning I was 79kg. Not sure aim maybe low 70s.... I'll definitely just chill with it eat less 80% of the time and weigh myself and keep it steady or lowering.... but not really missing the extra food. I still have a biscuit or two but before it was half the pack lol 😆 now I try to be much stricter. 😅 I have never drunk but do like tea with milk but use sweetener not sugar usually. I'm not giving up every vice lol

I treat my calorie intake/ burning just like a bank account. I know my credit and debit on a daily basis and adjust accordingly. You need to determine the base calories needed to maintain weight when not doing any excercise and then determine what you can consume beyond that based on the excercise you do. I have had my dinner and have 325 calories credit, that will not buy much 🙂 Tomorrow is Xmas dinner so that will have to be estimated. Processed food is often very high calorie but we need it on multi day hikes.
