I think the two selves are 1) The Will 2) The emotions When we deny ourselves we are saying "no" to our fleshly desires which feel good, but allowing our will which is like the rudder of our vessel to override those natural urges and to take charge and say "yes" I WILL deny myself. Sometimes we fail as the spirit is willing...but the flesh is weak....We are at war with these two urges and and really, our flesh must be crucified as with Jesus....He gives us the grace to live in victory and every sacrifice brings glory to our awesome Lord...He is worth living for and worth dying for...

Don't listen to him. John Piper is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Romans 7 deals with the conflict of the flesh and the spirit. Listen to what Paul says about serving sin and serving the spirit. Not this man Piper. Piper is merely a minister of satan. You don't need seminary school. You need the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9 tells us that if we don't have the spirit we don't belong to Christ. The spirit is given as the seal of our inheritance. It is something that we experience of God, when He comes in and makes His dwelling with us. Without the spirit of God, everything else is just academia. Self denial, etc., is all very nice and noble sounding but it has nothing to do with walking with Jesus.

And take up his cross and follow me 😶 What is the cross to Christians? Answer..its symbol to jesus because he die on it But why jesus will say take up the cross and follow me 😂😂😂 Did he knew that he will be crucified? Did his people understand it before it happened . All what I hear when Christian open his mouth is blah blah blah Take up his cross What if he died by sword What he will say ? What if he died hanging...is he will say take his robe and follow me Unbelievably sickness . Read about Islam....one word ....logic

The battle is between the outer man our evil natured flesh and our inner man which is Christ in us! Every one that God gave to Christ will come to him and he will lose none! God will help his sheep find HIM, they will search for him and find him! They will obey him! They will search for the truth and sift out the trash of religion!

Entering this world, experiencing being but a human, instead of God and His infinitely great happiness, is the crucifixion. It is like letting yourself be nailed to "the body of this death" as Paul called it. Yet God out of His equally infinitely great Love for us willed that also we would have what He enjoys, so He gave us Himself, meaning His Self. It is God reading this now, be it but in human appearance. When we sit for contemplation, and undergo what comes up then without heeding suggestions to end it by doing something less unpleasant, that is undergoing the cross with Jesus, following his example. Not doing our own (human) will, but God's. It is God Who wants to undergo it in what seems to be but our appearance, but which is really His, all to our divine benefit, the benefit of our Soul. For His sake and His Name, meaning His Self-consciousness of Identity in us, no longer our miserable self-consciousness.

No one is Taking up a cross after salvation. No one is told to deny himself after being saved . Every one of the Diciples failed right after Jesus telling them that He was going to die . He asking them to do something he knew they would fail , including Peter denying Jesus after promising him he would never forsake him . This was to the jews at that time , before the day of Pentecost and the indwelling of the Holy spirit . The Gospel message is not eastern mystical denial of self to be saved . Its believe on the Lord Jesus . Jesus dies for us , we dont die on a cross. Gal 2.20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. We dont deny the ' new man ' in Christ .

Sorry you are missing the point. Both Jesus and Paul said to take up the cross. Daily! Fasting is denying yourself. Jesus said we would do that. Do you? Look up Luke 9, Matthew 6 and II Corinthians 4. Until your new man gets a new body like Christ's you will have the joy of mortifying your old one.

Straight up devilish doctrine. I hope and pray that this lie from the pit of hell you have renounced already. Deny yourself is part of the New Covenant. Look at what Paul teaches Timothy (well into the New Covenant): Timothy 2:22 New International Version 22 Flee the youtuful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. and : Titus 2:11 11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age Choose God or the devil, my friend. Self or God.

This is an invitation from our blessed Lord Jesus the author of forgiveness and salvation to put off the old self and come to the cross by faith and live in the new life born again as a new creation in Christ". ( Mark 8:35 ) is the answer and remedy to ( Mark 8:34 ).

It took me 50 years to realize that fasting is perhaps the primary way we deny ourselves.

Hello! Could you explain what you meant by "come after me" and "follow me" being the same word? I looked it up and one has root word ἔρχομαι and the other ἀκολουθέω. Thank you.

I am not a Greek scholar, so take my input with a grain of salt. I think while the statement that they are the same word may be an oversimplification, he is right in that the sentiment of the two words implies the same thing. The first instance, Greek word erchomai is used. Its translation is something like: to follow after, specifically talking about following someone as a guide. Then the second instance, the Greek word akoloutheō is used. Different greek word, but it has very parallel implications to the first: To follow someone going before you, to follow as a disciple. Different Greek words used, but they have the same intention as far as meaning. That is how I would unpack that statement. Hopefully that helps!

I think maybe the implication is that it is one action. You can't follow another without denying another. It's the same as repent and believe. You can't repent (turn away from the old) if you don't believe you have anything to repent of. You can't believe if you don't recognize that there is a need for repentance. It is two realizations that bring about one action. It's the same requirement needed in a successful marriage union. God requires that a man "leave his father and mother and cleave to His wife." He can't become one flesh with his wife if he doesn't "leave" his old life under his parents authority and "cleave" to his new life. I believe that all marriages that fail do so because a man doesn't leave his "old" self and cleave to his wife. She is supposed to be his new identity in earthly relationships. Just as Jesus is our new spiritual identity. The Bible tells us that marriage is supposed to represent the relationship Jesus has with the Church. Repent and believe, leave and cleave, and deny and follow have similar meanings. You can't actually cleave without leaving. You can't actually believe without repenting. You can't actually follow without denying. Trying to do one without the other is not possible. It's just hypocrisy, and things get heavy and burdensome because we didn't do both. It's like fighting against yourself trying to be something you can't be because you didn't actually perform the entire action in your heart. It's self deceiving and useless to do one and not the other. I think that's what Jesus meant when He said you can't serve two masters. You can't serve Christ without leaving the old (repentance). You can't serve your marriage without leaving the old (can't cleave to your own self interests and your wife at the same time.) Sorry it is so wordy. I hope it made sense.

Not taking away from the teaching here. I agree. I also want to add that if you read the verse before you’ll get insight as to why Jesus said this in the first place. And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. Then Jesus said… And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

To deny yourself means: give up your religious beliefs and accept only those that take you to Love.
