    Update 2: We've heard the feedback from our community and from our team internally and monetization has been turned off for this video. Update 1: It's come to my attention that in Billet Labs' Reddit post, they censored the quoted cost of their prototype water block. We were never asked to keep this information private, and given that our sources for the matter were our own correspondence with them rather than Reddit, we didn't know to include the censorship. At this point, there's probably not much point Streisand Effecting it, but I'll blur it anyway on KZread and we'll get it blurred on Floatplane as soon as one of our editors is awake -LS

    I remember hearing multiple times from Linus about a 'revelation' he had, where he asked a large company how they got the best engineers. The big company said they didn't have the best engineers, they just give their really good engineers enough time to make the best products. It seems like he has given that idea to his engineering team (3 years for a good screwdriver) but has never applied that tenet to his video teams. It's always rush to the next project or video, not to give the team the time they need to make the best videos.

  • @boanerges5723

    @boanerges5723

    10 ай бұрын

    They didnt "make" that screwdriver. Williams (a company very near geographically to LMG) made the WS1 for a LOOOOONG time. It was a good screwdriver. The difference is the bits for the LTT screwdriver are shorter than the standard bits the WS1 uses and so it holds twice as many. The WS1 is a great screwdriver for $35. I have one sitting around here somewhere and Ive had it for quite a while. They may have looked around for a company to partner with but they didnt "design" that screwdriver.

    All large corporations are souless. LTT isn't really that large but its big enough that it's showing signs of the same problem. A bunch of individuals all trying to justify their jobs and look good, and all making decisions eventually contradicting eachother because they did not have all the necessary information to make that decision. Then you have control freaks with power over others making decisions based on their own ego causing all sorts of unnecessary problems for everyone beneath them. Then lastly, Maddison's problem. A bunch of males with authority over a younger female, male co workers working around her likely often without any female supervisers or HR trained personell around to stop the "boys will be boys" type attitudes and actions. It's possible untrained supervisors especially males will literally say something along the lines of "boys will be boys stand up for yourself and they won't bother you" which is usually true, but definitely now how you handle this professionally.

    It's worked thus far for the last 30 years of tech. The issue LTT has is it's hired a bunch of inexperienced people who lack the expertise you need in order to do this work properly. It's not a case of doing too much, too fast. These are simple issues which shouldn't even make it into the first draft of a video script.

It baffled me how they spent what feels like no time with the product and then give out scathing reviews or sometimes report purely off of stereotypes. At the time I thought it was just the typical "tech bro" stereotype, and stopped tuning in. Good to see that these behaviours are finally getting called out.

You keep making money by keeping us around. I’ve been on both sides in my career and can sympathize .. bottom line I think it’s the behavior and lack of taking responsibility for bad decisions in a substantial way that are the nails being driven into this coffin. Im an engineer in medical device manufacturing. I say that because I want to give context to my comment. Early in my career, I worked for companies like Linus Media Group. They would push stuff under the rug to maintain their trajectory, but typically screw up and have fallout consistent with this video (albeit less public). I kind of chuckle hearing them talk about process improvements and transparency. Not to discount their hard work, but they review computer tech. As long as your testing is as accurate as you can make it (considering your conditions that should be known), there's really not much to it. I've validated processes for products that are implanted in your brain. As long as you do the right stuff, have the correct people to support it and give a shit, you'll be ok. Linus media group's problem is the ran before they could walk not realizing their opinion could literally bankrupt a company. Also, what they did to billet labs was shitty, but legally, it depends on the agreement they had in place. Typically, when you make something for someone, its difficult to protect your IP. Granted, if they rip off the design, you will have to litigate it pending a patent. If I was billet labs, id be pissed at hell. I know the cost of custom CNC machining and its very expensive because you're paying setup costs, material cost, and all of the upkeep costs associated with machining. Typically $200 an hour Test results will speak for themselves. Give a conclusion, but don't shit on a company (even if you think it). it will bite you in the ass.

    It all comes down to money. Linus has made huge investments in the past two years, and now he has to bring in the money to make them profitable. This leads to a lot of pressure to the employees and Linus himself. The question is whether the crisis will hit them hard enough to force a downsize, or if they can take it in the chin and move on like nothing happened. I think Linus is a good person too, but, power and stress has fueled his ego to a point where if he were to control everything himself, the channel would collapse; that's probably why he knew to step down as CEO. Luke I think maintained his mentality because he detached himself from KZread (and in turn, the success of the channels), and Yvonne obviously never cared about wealth/status from the day she got romantically involved with Linus, so she's hard to corrupt.

I have seen this channel become a view farm and honestly tuned out from it mostly, but this non apology of this company and not honing up to their bad shit. Completely ignoring some points and shoving their own mistakes onto someone else (who will take the fall for it) [best example the cooler] makes it clear that this is just a view farm with minimum effort reporting. This show has degraded from a tech review to a fancy unboxing quality tests. The Truly unethical and the non-appology makes things so much worse. LTT deserves to take the hit for their own non stop mistakes[edit; Why get angry about this review thing? Imagine if you write a sci-fy about life on mars. And the reviewer says 'Well this movie is about earth. It sucks and not worth your time.' its just not true. And the only victim in the above transaction is you. The person that writes the movies. Not LTT... they got their view and people place their trust in their review. IF you call yourself a in-depth tech reviewer you must hone up to the quality that is expected. They knew and carried on...] (that cost both the suppliers and consumers money) and they refuse to.

They have been asking for a less hectic work flow, asking for time to make better content instead of more content and hoping that they will be able to make videos that they are truly proud of. This may be the catalyst for the change they've been waiting for. Let's not ignore that this is happening during what is already a transition period for LMG as their new CEO assumes more and more of the CEO responsibilities. This week should provide a clear line separating the previous era of LMG and what will hopefully be a successful and better new era.

To me it seems clear that their drop in standards is not a malicious attempt to increase their bottom line over all else, but just a company trying to do to much, which is something that can happen to the best of companies. This response seems pretty fitting to me. It seems genuine because they actually have a plan to fix everything. There is way too much content on YT. Billions videos fighting for viewers' attention, creating an extremely competitive market. To battle *the algorithm* LTT has been spamming mediocre videos for years now. I don't think anyone can keep up with the daily upload schedule, especially the videos being on a longer side but LMG is clearly going for a scattershot. Better to hit wider audience of occasional watchers then keeping a smaller, more dedicated fanbase that watches every video. I don't understand why people are suddenly so suprised that the video quality gets hurt in the process. I also don't get why people are so upset about this video. It seems perfectly in line with what LTT produces. To be perfectly frank, apology videos does not matter at all. The important part is what happens next.

    I've been working in tech for about 20 years now. And it never ceases to amaze me how the silo effect apparently creeps up in every single possible type of tech companies. Doesn't matter if you make websites, stream videos, code games or elevator controllers. If you don't make sure to keep lines of communication in place. Doesn't matter you used to be a super tight team of 10 people, when you mushroom to larger sizes. That communication can't just happen anymore. It has to be thought out meticulously. Change Management is no joke.

    When I worked on a demo range we had a policy where any person on the range could call a stop if they saw something dangerous. It didn't matter what their job was. If they saw something that didn't look right they could call a stop, voice their concerns, and have the issue checked before moving on. Empowering and encouraging every employee with this ability will ensure that everyone is on board with each project that goes out the door and add additional safety checks to ensure quality and accuracy.
