What Do Europeans Really Think About British culture?

Ойын-сауық

Queuing, tea and talking about the weather. Are us Brits really that predictable? A few UK based Europeans who we spoke to (before the referendum) seemed to think so. What's more, they wouldn't have it any other way. We'll say 'cheers' to that.

Really? As a French person myself, I thought she was sooo French, but the loving-UK type of French (like myself actually). I think that's because we French and British people have a lot more in common than we want to admit She was wrong on one thing though, the sorry thing, we also do this all the time, like we have different types of "désolé" and you have to figure out what it meant based on the way we say it

i like doing it, because it makes me feel secure that i will get my turn, unlike in other countries that I have been to where they all shove and push and you have to be really aggressive to get seen to. Here it's just, ok, I will wait 5 minutes but that is ok because I will eventually reach the counter or the bus door and nobody will knee me in the groin or snatch my handbag and throw it so they can take my place.

Yeah, I don't like it...it's just something I was raised to do. I do find myself getting really angered when tourists don't realise you have to queue for something hahaha. I remember waiting for a bus in the middle of the city centre and there were a lot of people who had immigrated here waiting for the bus too. As soon as the bus came it was literally every man for himself and I didn't know how to cope lol

I never knew people in other countries don't normally queue until I heard people talking about queueing as a British only thing (which it obviously isnt, we in Slovakia queue too). First of all, how do you all survive, do you really just push and yell? And second of all, it's not that we love it, we just do it because it's a socially acceptable thing to do. Stand in a queue and wait quietly for our turn.

Marína Urbanová I'm from Croatia and people here are not that patient when it comes to queueing. If they see a queue, people will usually just give up and come back later or next day in the time of the day when not many people are waiting in line. But if we have to wait in line (for cinema, theatre...) we wil complain CONSTANTLY, sigh loudly, swear under our breath, etc.

Ti chromic it’s manners to respect each other, and treat people as you wish to be treated, we respect each other and think that if many people want to use something’s there should be a system instead of pushing your way to the front when others have been their longer than you.Ethnocentric ?maybe. but at the same time , you cant you blame us for respecting each other and having a fair process to which we all abide. And if someone is in a hurry like need to do something urgently most of the time I believe if is very urgent a person will ask the people in the queue can they please go ahead of them etc, and we let them, mostly because they are polite to us. I think maybe people view it as politeness, but it’s sort of expected of you to be fair etc. Maybe it is ethnic or maybe it’s manners. But then are manners to British people mannerisms specially coin to us as Brits

I remember being in Italy years ago. I watched while an elderly lady was trying to buy a roast chicken from a vendor selling them out of a van. It was obvious the queuing was not the de rigeur. She was getting jostled out of the way by people a fraction her age. Felt a little sorry for her. Queuing is a trait of an orderly civilization, first come first serve and wait your turn . I like to think humans have moved on a little from laws of the jungle. Queuing is not a weakness but a strength and an understanding of fair play.

Also, while u travel u just tend to queue at museums or other attractions and others are mainly tourists just like you, but queuing at offices with only Italians can be really awful at times.

That’s quite surprising, I’ve met a lot of people from Surrey (as a lot of people from the home counties work in London) and they’ve never struck me as being racist. There's rubbish and litter everywhere, the most vulnerable of the society aren't taken care of (so many people are homeless) and you don't always seem to appreciate the wonderful NHS. I'm lucky enough so that these problems (apart from the litter I guess) aren't affecting me directly but it sure makes me sad to see homeless people or hearing the NHS being ran down. Homeless people should be helped but the next set of people to become homeless, will most likely be people who are just poor now so they should stop homelessness before it happens, oh wait, they wont because everyone who is rich or has power are selfish and care about nothing but the 1%, and themselves. Atleast we dont have to pay for healthcare, im grateful for that.

But the only thing I can't get used to is that the British are so polite that it is almost cold and that they don't show their actual feelings. It keeps giving me the feeling that I need to read their faces like Sherlock Holmes to find out what they actual mean when I have a conversation. Maybe it is because the Dutch are totally opposite and our directness sometimes seems rude to foreigners but that directness in native to me and in my nature. That also makes me constantly aware of what I say in the UK and makes me insecure because I don't want to accidentally insult somebody. If not for that, I would love to live in the UK because their so much plusses. But I am afraid I can't never totally fit in or feel comfortable being just me when I would live there.

Dutch are very forwards and always express their opinion even if it means disagreeing with someone they've only just met. I prefer the Dutch way even if Dutch can be very opinionated. I think Dutch people could start an argument with themselves.

Its because we are quite reserved until we get to know you, many don't believe in airing their dirty laundry in public so to speak, especially to strangers, they believe that what goes on behind closed doors should stay behind closed doors and is none of anyone else's business except for those involved, but once they get to know you they will open up more. But that being said, if someone was being rude or disrespectful , many people would ask why? And then try to resolve the situation in an adult way but if it went further, then you would see them stand their ground.

We queue in America, we even campout for concert tickets, sporting events, etc. so we can remain near the front of the line. Another odd thing in my part of the country (Montana) is, if you arrive at a door before the person behind you, you open the door for them. Also, cars darn near have accidents stopping for people wanting to cross the street, even if it's in the middle of a block.

As a Canadian, I feel the constant apologizing and taking advantage of every single moment of nice weather. But the inability of Brits to just go out drinking with friends without getting absolutely pants-around-your-ankles-passed-out-on-the-back-of-a-bus-with-a-condom-in-your-ear shit-faced EVERY TIME is just bonkers. Basically, if a British person goes out drinking and doesn't get completely hammered, it's because they were kidnapped in the middle of their evening. That's the only possible explanation.

I love my home, the UK. we have the best traditional breakfast (once you try continental on holiday once, you never try it again), relatively warm winters, more languages spoken here than anywhere else in europe, and the people are amazing. the British public give more to charity per capita than any other country in Europe and are overall very polite. That being said I love Europe too!

+ Ellie weber well we do have English, Scots Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Irish and maybe Cornish if you wanna class it as a spoken language kept alive by enthusiasts. I guess you could push it out further with Manx on the isle of Mann and the Jersy and Guernsey Norman French dialects but there are probably European countries that have more. I think most people in Luxembourg can speak 4 main language fluently.

But I do agree that we say sorry and thank you too much as a nation. When I'm abroad and still say sorry and thank you like I do here, people just look at me weirdly, but at the same time it's about being nice. I always feel a sense of comfort when I return from a long holiday and feel like I can queue , drink properly made tea and say sorry and thank you as often as I want again. Go Britannia!

Athough (sadly) not for long... (perhaps, I mean goodness knows what the fuck is going on with the EEA, financial passporting, Theresa May's supposed 'Brexit means Brexit'. The country's a mess. Mostly because historically Europeans haven't considered Britain to be part of Europe and more as just an island in the north sea similar to Iceland or how the Japanese weren't considered part of Asia but as a separate entity. The French had major issues with England controlling land in Europe because the English had developed a completely separate identity to that of mainland Europeans even down to actual gender equality in the 7th century up until the Norman Invasion. Napoleon didn't even consider the British to be Europeans and that's why he didn't expect them to become as heavily involved in Europe as they did become during his empire building phase. It's only in the last 100-150 years that the British and Mainland Europeans have begun to include British in European affairs mostly because of wars.
