Things Not To Say To An Old Person

Ойын-сауық

They say you're as young as you feel, which for many older people is sexy, energetic and fantastic. No wonder then, assumptions of a lonely life without sex or the internet can quickly get tiresome.

Allana Pereira It happens a lot where I live, especially when the old folks live alone (and especially during this quarantine time period). Many of them get lonely since they can only read newspapers and watch TV every day with nobody to talk to (since many old folks living alone here usually spend a lot of their time chatting with their friends in the void deck). Many might develop dementia from it, and it’s really saddening :/ Tbh, I feel that teaching these old folks to use modern technology would be a good idea; so that they can communicate with their friends and family, and also entertain themselves online.

If you take care of yourself, eat well not the American diet, exercise and keep current you will have a better chance. I had a big hormone drop which seems to be genetic because my mom had the same thing. I went on hormone treatment. Before that I thought for sure I was a dementia patient. My mom stopped taking hers and I think that is when her health went down. Now I am back to looking younger than my age like I always did before since I was young.

No you don't have to get old I just started watching korean dramas three years ago which got me into Korean music kpop/ rap and rock. I went to my first kpop concert last year and joined a kpop meetup group. I am officially the oldest one in the group. I am 56. I was not the oldest person at the concert either. My daughter and I basically listen to the same type of music. Her is the American version and my the Korean. Funny I know more about the kpop groups than the 20 year old. The difference is I fan the music they fan the guys. You don't have to get old because your body is aging.

Because there is a stereotype that no one is doing it which is far from the truth. It really depends how healthy the person, if they have enough hormones and they don't put themselves on the shelf. Actually a lot of women are strangely in their prime as they age. I can't speak for the men on that.

My grandad on the otherhand has one phone he can barely use, doesn't even know how turn it on but he turned 80 in January and works 6.30am-9.00am every morning. I am proud of my grandparents

My parents made it to theie 80s born in 1928 and 29. Both were open people. Some people gain knowledge with age some don't. My mom actually left a church she was going to because the minister was against gay marriage. He had the church have some sort of vote. She refused to ever go back. I found out she wasn't for gay marriage which surprised me but for civil union. My cousin was gay and died of AIDS. My grandma was very religious but I never heard her say a bad thing about him and she was born in 1901. I think age doesn't have to mean you don't understand that we are all made different.

Yes there are people at any age who refuse to learn anything new. My mom is a bit backwards whereas my dad is very open minded. They do come with the prejudice of their time but I think it is bc of ignorance. The more you talk about it the better. They get new perspective and knowledge changes people who want to be changed.

My grandmother is turning 95 two days after I turn 17 and she’s still living at home and is still just as flirty as ever. She’s a sweet Georgian woman who doesn’t take shit from anybody. Also, I came out to her as transgender and bi and she was just like “honey, I love you regardless.” UPDATE: Sadly, my Mimi passed away late 2022 but still outlived the Queen. She was a badass with an attitude who knew what she wanted right until the end and she will be missed.

My grandpa passed away at 94. Before he passed away, he was completely lucid, smart as a whip, had a better memory than me (I'm dead serious about this), and was completely mobile and almost entirely independent. I used to drive him to his appointments because we had to travel a long distance to get these particular shots in his eyes which only a few clinics could do. One day, the medical assistant came in, said "HI, MR. BURNS! HOW ARE YOU TODAY?" in this really loud, cutesy voice like she was talking to a child, then turned to ME and started asking me about if he'd had pain recently, how he was feeling, etc while COMPLETELY ignoring him! I was fuming mad. I said,"Let me ask you a question: if I were your patient and I had my mom or sister with me, would you ask THEM how *I* was doing, and if so, would you talk to me like a 2nd grader?!" She went on to apologize but then continued to talk to him loudly. I said, "Dude! He can hear you! I'd like you to stop." She left the room. Grandpa was pretty lighthearted about it and said, "I thought she was about to give me a lollipop!" When the doctor came in, I complained about the woman and went on a rant about how she needs to be retrained in how to treat elderly patients. He was good about it. My grandpa had a great sense of humor, and walked 2 miles each way to the grocery store every single day until he was 89 years old. I want to be that independent and strong if I am lucky enough to reach such an age. Respect your elders, but respect them the way you would anyone else.

don't think this gives a very wide view of old people, for example one guy said 'i don't care a scrap about being old aslong as I'm mobile and fit and independent' but many old people aren't any of those things. and many don't have much of a social life, because they are physically unable to go out and do things themselves

The good thing is that you don’t have to leave the house to interact with people. I rarely get out because of mobility issues...I’ve had RA for 40 years and I’ve always said that when I got old I’d already be used to it. That’s true up to a point but the disease progresses and I tire easily. That sucks. But I love being at home with the husband and dogs, talking to friends and strangers on digital devices.

Can you do "things not to say to someone with learning disabilities" I am dyslexic and everyone thinks I'm really dumb and can't read or write and then they start talking slow thinking I am dyslexic to hearing or some shit XD Id say dyslexic people at least for me read and write better then none dyslexic people do to the fact they have to concentrate even more and learn tricks to decode all the mess when reading or writing. we have our own way of wreading and writing. I also have Dyspraxia so that means my hand writing closely resembles one of a 5 year old and it also messes up my words when talking to people and my hand eye co-ordination is shit but I play video games so I am a lot better now at reacting fast and with hand eye co-ordination. I also have dyscalculia which is pretty much Dyslexia but with math.

Amber, that's inaccurate. Neither autism or Down syndrome are learning disabilities, although, people with autism and Down's can have learning disabilities. Autism is a neurological disorder that often doesn't impair academic abilities (my son is a straight A student without learning disabilities, some of his classmates have learning disabilities on top of having autism). Down syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality (3rd copy of the 21st chromosome) that causes intellectual disabilities, which, is not the same as having a learning disability. Learning disabilities solely have to do with the way the brain acquires and processes knowledge. They can stand alone or coincide with other disorders, such as, ADD/ADHD; Autism Spectrum Disorder; Dyspraxia; etc. A 60s kid. I have dyscalculia. It's a terrible thing to battle...I had the worst time in med school, and needed a lot of extra help and some exceptions and exemptions from my professors. I wouldn't have made it through without all of that.

MyTeamsBettah you're quite right. I wasn't thinking. I meant they can make learning difficult for some people with them. I meant to say that they'll usually do more specific episodes than 'learning disability' because that can mean a lot of things. It was a bad example

Maybe some people ask these questions because they're VERY stereotypical of the elderly. Many don't use the internet. Many don't have sex. Many can't hear you and can't understand you. Sure, these guys can do it. Doesn't mean all elderly can. Many can't.

  • @kessaiaevaline4061

You're confusing old with sick. You're thinking of extremely sick, extremely old people who have lost all ability to function, who suffer very serious illness, but this is not the norm. Most people will not go through that stage, and those who do, it is usually only the last 1-2 years of life. Many people have healthy, happy older years with diminished function happening very gradually, and many will be independent or semi-independent until death. I've never met someone in their 80+ years who doesn't use the internet more than I do. They have more time, and it's a great communication tool for those who cannot drive anymore or find it difficult to go out or travel. I work in elder care in hospitals so have to say, you're stereotypes are based on ignorance or willful misunderstanding.
