What Do Dogs See When They Watch TV?
Some dogs just seem to love watching TV. But are they really watching what we see?

I remember when my dogs were watching a nature documentary with me and my dad. Being Rhodesian Ridgebacks, a hunting dog, they actually started peeking behind the TV as if they were hunting. It was really interesting!!
My cat definitely watches tv, but she's more interested when animals are on the screen or when there are animal noises. She's sitting on me now and just watched this video. I bet she's judging you.

3:12 My dog heard you say "go on a walk" that and ran to the door. Thanks a lot, hank! :P
I used to have a Sheltie that would bark consistently at the stained-glass image of a cat that was seen at at dog's-eye-level in the floor-to-ceiling window of a vet's office. Being stained glass, the image was quite an abstraction, which makes this especially surprising. The same dog would bark at various types of stuffed-animals seen in the distance. I'm pretty sure this particular dog was able to visually discern abstract representations of animals.
My rabbit seems to enjoy watching tv so much that she often times thumps if I turn it off. Although, that probably has more to do with the sound than the imagery.

THEY ANSWERED MY QUESTION. And I'm weirdly excited about this.
My dog loved certain TV shows obviously very into nature documentaries but the one weird one I never got was trains. Genuinely you would stick a train video on KZread on and he would get super stoked about it especially if it blew its horn could never get why but dam did he love him some trains. That and certain little kids shows.
@remraft
6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, our dog liked a lot of kids shows-- we'd leave that channel on for him during the day. My (totally spitballing) theory is that it's something to do with the higher pitched voices-- I've read that the reason people kind of instinctively use a "baby" voice with kids and pets is because they actually respond more to those higher-pitched vocalizations (more brain activity or something). So yeah, baby talk is annoying, but there's a biological basis for it, and kids shows have more of those high, energetic voices, presumably to keep the kid's attention.
@richardturner6981

@@remraft Yes , that's very true. If you're training a dog they learn faster and easier if you speak in a high pitched baby talk voice.

What is even more sad (and horrible) to me is that there are lots of different dogs that were bred for the sole purpose of being tiny and cute. Things like chihuahuas and pugs and pomeranians.. I think they're hideous. Not to mention that lots of these "toy dogs" have have very short snouts, which is completely unnatural for a dog and it makes breathing for them difficult. At least those dogs you mention weren't bred to have disgusting genetic deformities.

Herding dogs LOVE what they do - they're tireless runners, and it's a social job. They were bred to enjoy certain things they are good at, and to be the best breed at doing that thing. Not all selective breeding is bad. Making pug noses so short that they suffer with breathing difficulties, just for aesthetics? Now that's cruel.
My dog apparently likes sports and news but not so much into video games... So... 60fps vs 30? He's a terrier.

The refresh rate is what matters most, not the frame rate. The difference is refresh rate is a strobing effect (at least with the old CRTs or LED-backlit displays), while the frame rate affects the "choppiness" of the animation. So for humans, a 60Hz display with a 60FPS animation will look the same as a 120Hz display at 60FPS. Besides, most TV shows and movies are recorded at ~24FPS, which dogs seem to be ok with.

We had a dog that loved watching certain TV shows and it did extend to at least one animated show-- a kids cartoon with puppies as the characters. It also had lots of barking-type sounds, though, so that could be what drew him. He was actually a daschund, so a hound-type dog, but boy did he love his "dog soaps" (as my mom called them). If he heard one of his favorites on the TV, barks or no barks, he'd come rushing in the room. We'd leave it on the kids channel for him during the day since that was his favorite.

My mother's ~4 year old female Cocker Spaniel loves TV. She uses her eyes surprisingly much. Last time I saw her watching TV, she was very deeply engaged in watching a cheetah hunt for food. Dogs are fun. :D

Evolution is weird, Dog's see what they need to as carnivores. certain types of animals learned to see UV spectrum so that they can avoid predators, but man do I wish that we could see more colors than we can because then we'd be able to figure out a heck of alot more about what they actually do compared to our understanding of them just being there.

@@busimagen , are you making a case for 'Red'? One might think that there is an advantage to seeing red because red blood means 'fresh meat' to carnivores.
now you have an excuse to buy the 120fps rig you dont need.
You haven’t seen all the videos of dogs whimpering and showing signs of distress and then sadness when watching the dad death scene in the animated lion king
I saw a video of a large dog sitting on the edge of his seat on the couch next to his owner. He was watching a football game that seemed intense. I could tell bc the dog was riveted and was almost shaking in anticipation when it happened HIS TEAM GOT A TOUCHDOWN! It was mayhem in the room but the best part was the dog. He absolutely recognized what was happening so when it happened, he flung himself up in wild abandon yelping with joy. I thought maybe he picked up on latent clues from his owner next to him. While it appears that they both reacted at the same time, upon many views though the dog actually gives the clues to the human. You can see her momentarily swivel confused why the dog was losing his mind. It was so fast and her reaction seemed simultaneous with her dog which made it more hilarious. I suggest you try to find it under "dog watches football" or something like it. You won't be disappointed.
Dogs are awesome!

I had a Maltese that absolutely hated whenever there was a horse on the TV. Most things he was fine watching, but he would go crazy whenever a horse popped up.

My cats like to watch me on the computer. Quick mouse/cursor movements especially excite them. So does lots of visual change. They really like watching Minecraft for example. Putting down a light source like a torch gets their attention, or big changes in color between indoors and outdoors. Also, the particles and drops get their attention as they move fast and spin around.

Doesnt old lightbulb flicker 50 times per sec? (50Hz) so based on this we should see the flicker but we dont...is it coz of "slow" cooling of the bulb in the off faze?
@SaberusTerras
6 жыл бұрын
It flickers at the rate of the AC current powering it, when the current reverses, the power stops flowing temporarily. So it flickers at 50 or 60 Hz. The filament doesn't have time to cool off that much, barely at all in an incandescent. Older or cheap LED bulbs the flicker is much more noticable, it won't put out any light when the polarity is reversed. Better quality LED lights use various methods of preventing flicker by having pairs of LEDs with opposing polarities or smoothing capacitors to emulate DC current, or go with full blown DC converters.
@freespuddy
6 жыл бұрын
50 Hz power goes to zero at 100 times per second, so old incandescents have flicker at 100 or 120 times per second. That flicker is very small because the filament takes time to cool.

There are youtube videos that advertise themselves as for cats. I put one on one christmas for my sisters cats; they were immediately engrossed by a video of a squirrel finding food on a forest floor. They were pushing their noses closer and closer to the screen, I didn't even think they could focus that close. It was so funny lol.
We had a terrier mongrel who loved to play football (soccer). He also liked to watch it on tv. Whenever the ball went out of screen, he'd run round the back of the telly to find the ball. 1960s, free standing telly, not nailed to the wall, like most today.
One of my favourite moments was when my greyhound tore from the back of the house to our living room and searched behind every speaker for the Logan’s Run cats.
I love how the only anecdote in the whole of Sci Show has something to do with an animal we love. It's not great science, but it's great people...which is great :D
Oh my god, dogs can see yellow and blue. And you just so so so casually dropped that information like it wasn't the biggest revelation I've had all fuckin' year. Thanks Hank.
I mean. . . i have a 240 refresh rate on my monitor so my dog is watching just fine...
My rat terrier used to flip out when something scurried across the screen in a show, barked at big cats, and perked up at any squeaks or barks from the speaker. One Outback Steak House commercial with black silhouette kangaroos bounding across the screen just about gave her a stroke.
my family’s dog cooper is a cairn westie. she loves to bark at the tv, especially any sorts of animals. so whenever i would leave the house i would turn on cartoon network so that she had something to keep her company, but wasn’t losing her mind at any live action animals. we have the flat screen in front of the sliding glass door to the backyard. sometimes cooper will look behind the tv stand or look outside to see where the chimps from the animal documentary were
So interesting about the screen rate 60x per second thing. My son went to a projector on a big wall movie thing a few years ago (probably around when this video was made) and he was extremely frustrated about the slow screen rate, describing it like a flip book or strobe light. No one else noticed or cared. He came home saying “That couldn’t have been more than 40-50 frames per second! Good way to make a good movie garbage!” He’s definitely human - I’m not a “dog mom”. I did just get a puppy though, for the first time. Ok, so admit I AM going through a little empty nest thing right now. I am worried that any tv watching will hurt my puppy’s eyes. :)
Please be not kidding about the scishow dog channel. That would be amazing !!!!!!!!!!
