What Dating Was Like In the Victorian Era

Ойын-сауық

Dating in the Victorian era in America and in Britain meant navigating through a fog of modesty, prudence, ritual, corsets, top hats, calling cards, and your inner voice feverishly whispering etiquette book platitudes: "There is no propriety in voluntarily prolonging your ride, with a young gentleman, till after dark!" "Nothing can take the place of true genuine manhood!"
Etiquette books were all the rage at the time, advising men and women on Victorian courtship rituals and what it means to be a proper lady or manly gentleman.

Quite the opposite, once you did all of the vetting on your potential partner you didn't waste time. Most high society girls and women would be married within 3 years of their debut into social society (going to events, dances/balls). That's where the term "debutante" comes from (not sure I spelled it right).

There are a lot of great points in here: 1. If they treat you badly in courtship, walk away because they'll be a bad partner. 2. Don't make eachother jealous 3. Don't pick fights 4. Don't lead people on (be upfront with your intentions, don't accept "gifts" or advances from everyone, don't flirt with everyone). 5. Stand up for the person you want to be with, and give them your full attention and loyalty. If you take out the weird gendered stuff (men are responsible for everything and women are emotionally frail), this is great advice for healthy relationships.

@@mandypandy111ify I can see how it might seem silly at first, but this was actually a major issue for me in my youth. My mother always encouraged me to accept gifts from boys from a very young age. The attitude was "that's just how it's done"; men buy ladies dinner and gifts. Not only is this unfair to men, but in accepting the gifts an expectation is created that something will be given in return, continuing the displays of affection until a formal relationship evolves. I was never able to be upfront with my feelings, so not accepting favors or gifts from people was a clear way of setting boundries. Lesson learned: Don't accept gifts if you do not intend to repay the kindness (that'd be rude), and don't encourage someone to believe they can buy your affection.

People these days are wild. I think these Victorian era etiquettes should come back to modern life. Nowadays it feels like manners only matter to women, men really don't care about women's feelings or follow basic manners. There is no proper flirting dating or anything, even a short single conversation with a straight male friend indicates signals for sex, even friends/colleagues ask for benefits lol. I sometimes wish I could go back to the times when you had to marry to have sex, ride a horse for miles just to have tea with the woman you love. Since it became way too easy to reach someone's bed, no one wants to marry until their thirties or at all. Today dating is a headache for religious or simply conservative women/men like me who want serious relationship which leads to marriage.

For sure, as a guy I've seen WAY too many girls just use men to get what they want or at least make the relationship tilted one way. Of course, my fellow men ABSOLUTELY need to clean up their act in some ways as well (such as their attitude and ESPECIALLY their language, for graciousness sake!), but I long for days when more couples actually cared about each other MUTUALLY and were willing to at least try to be there for each other whenever possible. It's awful when guys are told to just shape up, shut up and not express pain (sometimes because the girl doesn't want to hear about it). Even many of the most powerful men in history (the good ones) showed emotion many times.

Depends. When you were 14, would you have appreciated 21+-year-old men trying to open relationships with you? Because that's generally what happened when the age was lowered to 14 in 1823. Oh and before that it was 16 (with parental consent) and 21 without it. This resulted in parents getting involved in their children's dating life and "introducing" them to suitable (far older) men they felt would make a good husband. Of course, most women didn't marry until they were 16 (working class) or 18 (middle/upper class), but rest assured the relationships would start young to make sure the woman was thoroughly under the man's control. Oh and also no laws against beating your wife (once you were married, of course). These books leave out a lot of rather nasty details at he time, such as the above.

Right? I mean, sure women were were still treated as "lesser" than men in a lot of ways...but in a lot of other ways, you'd hardly even notice with things like gentlemen rules and even at one point there was a law made that allowed woman to stab a man with a hat pin (keep in mind that these hat pins where HUGE) if they were acting "ungentlemanly" (read: being a flat out sexual predator). Sure women were seen as lesser, but in a lot of ways it was pretty comfortably so.

remember some people dont want that, and there are no rules against it to do it the way you want, though it might require openly stating your wishes, or asking someone before a date if they would be up for it. i know it seems weird to try and 'dictate' how a date should be, but chances are the person is actually interested in doing it, too. its bad to impose a general rule on everybody like they did back then, not everybody fits into these rules or like how they work. today is fine, because everything is allowed as long as there is consent, and feelings and boundaries are considered. you can do it however you like it, if you find someone who agrees with it. someone could probably make a dating site or even role playing site out of it, if the need is large enough. maybe it already exists, i have not checked

Such a huge problem to do is men feeling “friend zoned” aka entitled to a woman’s body just because someone did a few niceties or offered kind friendship. I’ve even had a boyfriend in high school, that wanted or felt entitled to my virginity because he bought me lunch every Monday. I broke up with him. I do not accept things from people to this day for fear of having anything misconstrued. A gift means you expect nothing in return you do it because you want to. 3:40 in Mexico this is still almost universally observed. ANY man accompanying a woman, even if just friends and not dating at all, will literally go out of his way to protect a woman and put himself on the outside of the sidewalk. Even if that means having to move around if "outside" changes direction (crossing a street, changing direction). Also, most men still offer their arm for a woman to hold, again, with no romantic intent.

Just whatever feelings you have, whether it's loneliness, hollowness, sadness, or whatever, let yourself feel it. Now, I don't want you to dwell on them, cuz it will be destructive. I just don't want you to hold back your thoughts and feelings, for the sake of "health". just do what you need to do ☺️ And maybe, if you can, try to reunite with him a little bit, but maybe just visiting him, or talking to him on the phone briefly. Watching this I realize my husband is a gentleman; he always makes sure I'm on the inside of the sidewalk when we're out on walks, he's very discreet so he doesn't kiss me when we're around a lot of people in public, he's never given me cause to be jealous (and vise versa because I very much appreciate and love him), and even when he was in high school- he didn't flirt with every girl he met. He's seen as old fashioned by all his friends and family, but it's why I love him. Dating doesn't have to be full of spiteful mind games and it's a great relief when it isn't! And the whole thing about overly flirting and how it lessens people- I've always agreed with that.

Same! My hubby has this adorable little 'grrr' that he does if I try and open my car door. Sometimes I'll start sneaking my fingers towards the door handle just to hear him do it. XD A lot of people have commented (quite negatively) on him opening the door for me, and both of us are in agreement. He doesn't do it because he thinks I can't open the door; he does it because he loves me. It's the little things that he does that many people deem 'old fashioned', even when we're alone, that he uses to show that he is paying attention to me and looking out for my well-being. And I try and do the same for him. And now, he's teaching our son to do the same at 5 yrs old. The kid looks so proud of himself whenever he gets the door open on his own (we have an older car with stiff handles). How could I take away that feeling of accomplishment and joy of doing something just like daddy, just because I'm capable of opening the door myself?

Great to hear. As a guy, here's another thing that I've noticed works over the years: DON'T start a relationship with flirting, EVEN IF you know the girl would enjoy it. One, it can look bad to others; Two, you want to be this person's friend, not just develop erotic feelings. Start with a simple friendship FIRST, if deeper feelings later develop, THEN do true romance stuff. You'll save yourself a lot of heartache and pain for both, OR know for sure they're genuine (would you love that person equally when they were 89 years old and full of wrinkles?). Of all the elderly couples I've had the wonderful privilege of seeing, I'd say 85% of the ones married 50 years or more began with this friendship, NOT with flirting. It's truly beautiful to see the love has not diminished after all those decades, and many call their spouse "their greatest friend".

Here in India, still marrying the person you love is considered as an act of defaming the family members. They never support us to talk with the opposite gender or don't even allow us to hangout with our friends because they bring in a logic that if a girl go outside she may find a guy and fall in love with him. These stereotypes are still prevailing among Indians and that's why I compared Indians and the people who lived in the Victorian era in terms of dating and falling in love. Exactly All these comments wanting these rules back, and none realise why these rules were placed in the first place. Sure many are basic human kindness but a lot of them are rooted in the idea that women are men' property, who men need to win over as a prize. Also it kind of does injustice to the women, where they can't be the first one to approach a man.

I was under the impression to "call upon" someone was not exclusively used as a romantic reference. It would stand to reason that, like today, you could "call upon" someone to take a particular action. With that interpretation, a gentleman 'calling upon' a married woman in her own home but only with the husband's permission (at 3:58) would not quite seem to out of place with decorum of the time.

I mean ignoring how Chelsea just being mean at the end, yeah, in history we just tend to see the bad side. Sure women had weird expectations...like only being allowed to shop all day, not talk to men and honestly, upperclass women sound like they had boring lives, but they also had some perks, being upperclass and all.

@@jesslabrunette no offense, but if that is your real picture you are gorgeous, and you probably don’t have a hard time meeting people. I’m not saying falling in love or maintaining a relationship is easy, but a pretty face and an outgoing personality definitely puts you ahead of the game. Some people struggle with personality or behavior disorders or are just quiet or shy in general. If it’s easy for you, I wish you all the best. That’s just not a reality for everyone.

Nice video. Interesting to hear about rules that are not just the typically stiff and restrictive rules one knows from period dramas. But since you include different books that are part of a 40+ years time period I think one should have organized the video more according to the passage of time and shown differences and developements in this time period.

I was actually raised told that I couldn't date but could instead court. I actually don't regret being raised this way. Dating is more akin to just fooling around while courtship is more serious- you let the other person know from the getgo that you are looking for a spouse or a soulmate- not just a boyfriend/girlfriend- so you know pretty early on whether they are serious about the relationship or not.
