Mlogan11 This is the key fact that proves negligence by the people in charge of the port storage facilities. Who on earth allows fireworks to be stored close to ammonium nitrate and the countries reserve of grain? Pure idiocy and negligence.

Make sure the Government does not get the foreign Aid funds. There are others who also would like all those incoming foreign aid-funds. It should be used for the people not on failing Government bureaucrats or certain political orientated groups.

The ship was not seaworthy. The owners of the ship are more to blame than those that inspected it after it had to divert to Beirut. The officials in Beirut had to store the stuff somewhere initially, as the ship was sinking, and water and ammonium nitrate are not a good mix. So the initial move to store things on land was a sound decision. But it should have been moved somewhere much safer quickly. But probably nobody who could organise that felt responsible and wanted to shoulder the costs.

The stories are that there was some welding done to repair a warehouse, that then set fire to a store of fireworks or ammunition, which then in turn heated the ammonium nitrate enough for it to explode.

I don’t know how tonnes of ammonium nitrate compare to TNT in terms of explosive yield, assuming they’re the same a 2.7 kiloton yield is pretty small. You’d have to worry about the gamma emission if it was nuclear.
