    Some people are calling this an accident, but that completely misses the point. This was a man-made disaster. They consciously left Ammonium nitrate there for years, knowing how dangerous it is. My thoughts are with the people of Beirut!

    Ammonium nitrate only becomes flammable/reactable when it comes in contact with water/moisture, the whole reason it all exploded is because it was out in the weather on a port therefore it became dangerous

    1:25 - "They are looking for some bodies here..." If you mean the 10 firemen who responded to the fire, they will have a very difficult time finding any corpses. Look what the blast wave did to the CONCRETE grain silos. The human body is vastly more fragile. At that distance, death would have been instantaneous. @@DanSmithBK I hate that argument, its so weak to me. So basically you and your buddy Jon below think you can blame human actions on God. Down here we take responsibility for our actions because we're given free will. To have free will also means the ability to hurt others in which case 90% + of suffering in this world is caused by, others. Sure there's always a small portion of disease and body failure that hurts many, but I don't think we're here to be in heaven yet, as there is also lot to learn. To learn fully we need suffering in this world too, if you really want to have free will you have to know about both good and evil. Its a product of the gift of free will and our ability to choose who we are. Other peoples suffering tells most of us the importance of being good. With out bad things happening our free will and test of character would be gone. I certainly don't have all the answers but that's my view point, take it as you will.

  • @DanSmithBK

    @DanSmithBK

    3 жыл бұрын

    Lewis 789 and that’s a stronger argument? The religious can’t have it both ways - either God exists and he’s all powerful, so he’s responsible for this, or he’s not all powerful and this is not his doing, in which case there is no all powerful god. Which one do you choose? And for the supposedly 10% of ‘god made’ suffering you note, things like kids with cancer or mass malnutrition causing thousands of under 5s to die every day - that’s the kind of god you worship? No wonder the god botherers can’t make a cohesive argument!

After the ship and cargo were basically abandoned, the Port Authority knew precisely how dangerous it was and instead of doing what was right, they chose to have the cargo unloaded and stored at the docks, supposedly to auction it off. I just can't find it in me to see it as an accident.

    This explosion was a horrific tragedy of mammoth proportions, as if Lebanon has not been through enough already. My parents celebrated their 2nd honeymoon in Beirut in 1956. My mother always said that Beirut was better than Miami Beach at the time. Where else In.the world could one see the beautiful palm trees in the city center, Martyr's Square, and also have a view of the snow-capped Lebanese mountain range? The city was cosmopolitan, glamorous, multi-cultural, a center of education, fashion, with an iconic landscape and rich history dating back to Ancient Phoenicia. Aside from the incomparable natural beauty, the many restaurants filled with delectable aromas filled the air. From Shawarma, to kabobs, to all sorts of salads and dips were Beirut's famous pastry shops, the best Baklava in the world! The city was incredibly diverse, churches & mosques side by side, multiple languages could be heard; Arabic. French, English, Armenian, & Greek wete all spoken there by its residents. Lebanon has always been a place of refuge from the early part of the last century......Armenians & Greeks fled wore-torn Ottoman lands and sought refuge and safety in welcoming Lebanon. I visited Lebanon and was incredibly & warmly welcomed. The people are loving, hospitable, friendly with big hearts. I wept when I saw this explosion on the news. It was a huge tragedy! Beirut, a stunningly beautiful paradise again experienced tragedy! I pray for Lebanon every night. I love this magical place and wonderful people!

    A fire at the Beirut port caused the detonation of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, which had been improperly stored in a port warehouse for six years. The ammonium nitrate, commonly used to make fertiliser and explosives, arrived in Beirut in 2013 on a Moldova-flagged ship making its way from Georgia to Mozambique. The Rhosus merchant vessel, owned by a Russian businessman, was forced to dock in Beirut after facing technical problems at sea, according to (PDF) lawyers representing the boat’s crew. The ship was subsequently impounded by the Lebanese authorities for failing to pay port fees. In 2014, the ship’s cargo was eventually unloaded and stored in a warehouse in the port. In the years that followed a number of safety warnings were sent to multiple high-level officials but nothing was done. Experts have estimated the size of the blast as being the equivalent of 200 to 300 tons of high explosives. R.I.P. to all those who lost their lives because of negligence.

    Didn't want to watch this knowing how massively the step back to getting this place to resemble what it was would be and it definitely brought me down. Resilience and time is all I'll wait for now, sorry for your living areas and very beautiful architecture damaged and lost.

    So there was ~2,750 tons of Ammonium nitrate sitting next to a bunch of fireworks (since 2013) in the shipping warehouse in Beirut, Lebanon that was set on fire by a welding torch meant to patch a hole. The Fireworks (gunpowder) went off, which rapidly increased the temperature of the fire (400+ degrees F 204+ C), causing the Ammonium nitrate to Oxidize and explode. May those killed RIP, hopefully better safeguards are enacted to prevent such incidents from reoccuring. The explosion in Beirut was equivalent to about 600 tons of TNT comparatively, a nuclear explosion in Hiroshima, Japan was equal to 13,000 tons of TNT (little boy). 30+ accidental/terroristic/civil explosions have been recorded from the use of Ammonium nitrate.

    I am shocked at the level of devastation - and they're still looking for bodies. Such a tragic and horrifying event. BTW, Beirut looks like an interesting city.
