What Can We Learn About Jesus From Tacitus?

What can we learn about Jesus and early Christianity from a Roman historian who hated Christians? As it turns out quite a bit. Some skeptics will even go so far as to dispute that Tacitus' testimony about Jesus is even valid. I address those concerns as well as 6 key facts we can learn about Jesus from Tacitus.

Tacitus, Josephus, and Pontius wrote about Jesus. Why would a person born the other day say that Jesus was not real? Why would followers of Jesus Christ face persecution as early as 34 AD if Jesus Christ never existed?

I've heard that the reason there was an accusation of incest was because as we are adopted by God we are now all brothers and sisters in christ. I can easily see a Christian referring to his wife as his sister in Christ and a Roman misunderstanding that.

Tacitus was not friendly to Christians because they were fighting Romans. A few years after this supposed fire, Nero ordered Vespesians to go to Judea to retake it after the Jews had killed more than 12,000 soldiers. These were fighters. How can anyone be sure that Tacitus did not use the Gospels for the Pilate reference, making this reference circular? It is very interesting than to Romans, there were no difference between christians followers of Jesus or the Sicari who were fighting Rome. To Romans they were all the same. At least to Tacitus they are one and the same. At the end of Jewish Wars, Josephus says Titus Vespesian went to Rome and executed Simon Peter, the rebel. Was this guy a Christian?

Do you mean Simon Bar Giora? No, the Christians were not fighting the Romans, nor were they militant revolutionaries. They were a religious sect made up of Jews, Greeks, and Romans, etc. And they were generally pacifists. The only thing we know about the Christians in Jerusalem is that they fled the city and went to Perea after Cestus's army was crushed by Jewish Rebels. As for Tacitus using the Gospels, he covers this in the video: it is very unlikely.

Tacitus would not have mention the name " Jesus" because the letter " J" did not come into existence until 1524. The Greeks would have used " Izzus".

Okay, according to Tacitus, Jesus existed. That's generally accepted though so we don't really learn anything from Tacitus. I get that some people want to point out that evidence of Jesus existing is weak but that's hardly important. Let them have their opinion, let them be wrong. It can be difficult to definitively prove many things from that time period so we accept what little we know of Jesus and move on. I don't see any impact that this "debate" has on my life today.

Christus is a greek word sir..... Christ comes from the Greek word χριστός (chrīstós), meaning "anointed one" that's what his name was in greek..... as they spoke greek at that time in that part of the world.

Just because something is part of multiple bullshit organisations doesn't make it a fact Jesus does not prove god why does every theist argument do my head in anyway Jesus was conceived by magic and they didn't have Ivf back then so in my mind that kind of kills the argument right there

That depends on how you define major religion.....and interestingly enough none of these major religions that you mentioned believe that he was devine. Only christians believe that. As a side note it is also interesting that in 3 of the 4 gospels Jesus does not claim to be devine. He only makes that claim in John which is the newest of all the gospels. It is important to note that just because someone writes something it does not mean it happened. These are only claims made by an anonymous writer atleast half a century after the alleged event. In fact, the oldest gospel which is Mark, doesn't even mention the virgin birth or any sightings of the resurrected Jesus. In the oldest copies we have it ends when the women find the empty tomb and are to scared to tell anybody of what they saw. The rest was added later on.
