What Are The World’s Largest Airports By Surface Area?

Commercial aviation is an industry in which sheer size often captures the imagination. Indeed, Antonov’s legendary six-engine An-225 freighter attracts huge crowds of avgeeks wherever it flies. But when it comes to airports, certain examples stand out for their sheer enormity in terms of surface area. Let’s take a look at some of the largest examples.

Mirabel was larger than DFW when it opened, but as it flopped as a passenger facility some of its land was sold back to its previous owners, from what I've heard. I recall DFW being touted as the world's largest when it opened.

Having lived in the Denver area for years (not there anymore) and flown in and out of Denver many times I can confirm the land usage is massive. Granted, a lot of the land is not used for runways but it does have function. A plane can taxi for something like 3 miles at DIA. Sometimes you feel like you're driving to your destination.

@@explorenaked I think the most valid metric is total building and structure (terminals, hangars) footprint size plus total paved area (taxiways and runways). Paved parking lots and parking structures are debatable but I'd be fine including them.

@@explorenaked, the Denver Airport is larger in land area, than DFW. In fact, the Denver Airport mostly uses its land and is larger than the city of San Fransisco. And Denver is nearly as high in passengers too. In 2019 DFW had nearly 75 million passengers. And DEN had nearly 70 million.

@@DJAYPAZ The case for NRT is a story of its own. There are families who refuse to surrender their land and still have houses within the airport 43 years after its opening, blocking the construction of planned runways and necessitating several twists and turns on the taxiways. There is also no connection between the east and west aprons at the northern end. As a result, aircrafts may have to run a grand tour of the airport before reaching the runway. One time I was on the ground for about an hour before finally taking off.

I agree; most of that land that is inconsequential doesn’t contribute to the ‘interestingness’ of a given airport. Someone should take a separate measurement that calculates the area inside a hypothetical ‘box’ formed by active runways and buildings.

The empty space provides potential for a new terminal or support facilities, perhaps a runway realignment. If the airport doesn't secure that space, the surrounding community will, and that makes it way more difficult for the airport to take back if it needs to expand its capabilities.

Airports want to maximize the amount of space reserved to it, because the surrounding community will grow right up to the fence line and that will make it much more difficult to take it back in case a new runway is wanted. The space in between can also be used for future expansions, like a new terminal or support facilities.
