Magic Realm. The modular hex boards that have different paths when you enchant them, the open-ended game play, and the very different abilities & playing styles of the characters make this amazing. Ambush is very good also.

I have a game from SPI's foray into syfy and fantasy. The magazine was called Aries, and the game is The Wreck of the BSM Pandora. The map is a layout of the ship in three decks. The moduals that make up the ship are randomly placed on the map upside down so you don't know where anything is untill you enter the space and turn the marker over. The ship experiences an emergency exit from FTL because it got too close the a Wolf-Rayt star and was hit by a burst of radiation. Because the crew suffers from a crash dump from stasis, they are dissoriented and don't remember where anything is. Basicly, you have to repair the ship before it goes into cold shutdown all while dealing with all the biological specimins that have escaped.

I have Ambush, and it is a great game. The modern version of Ambush is the Combat system by Compass Games. You are still moving around a map with a squad, or squads of infantry, but this game is card driven, and works very, very , well. Also, in the Combat system, there are vehicles that will move and attack.

Ambush has vehicles that will move in attack, if I recall correctly. I have heard of the Combat system, I'll have to check it out!

High Frontier is a great game, but very thinky. It also has a few expansions to add to the thinkiness. If High Frontier interests you, then you should also investigate Stellar Horizons from Compass Games.

@@LegendaryTactics you can google to see a picture but it’s a game I’ve had since the 70s. The two player sit on different sides of the game and use plastic sliders to choose which play they want to choose (offence and defence). The two sliders are connected to each other under the board and when a button is pushed a light at the connection point under the board illuminates a play result (yards gained, fumble, interception, etc). I suppose may would not consider it a ‘board game’ but I do 😉. I think there are only a couple of us on BGG that are showing it as ‘owned’

hmm, unique... that's a tough one... what makes it unique vs just a game I really like :) One that comes to mind is the older Avalon Hill game Blackbeard (not the Richard Berg updated version, that one is far inferior imho)... it's by far my favorite pirate game... the board is beautiful, nothing else gives the feel of raiding ports and carrying off plunder while avoiding warships sent to capture you etc...

Definitely Up Front. It may be the original card based war game -- it's excellent. I also own Battle Hymn which is based on the Ambush game mentioned in the video, but takes place in the Pacific. I've started it many times, but have never gotten through the first mission in Battle Hymn in over 30 years...I think I keep hitting the same rules confusion and just give up.

@@LegendaryTactics I love the way you deduce where the treasures are located by the card play. Then you get an amount of treasure cards based on how many cards you contributed not just the player who reaches the treasure.

Mine isn’t as good as yours. PanzerBlitz. I was the end of the classics. Geomorphic map boards. The end of pink and blue counters and replaced with Tank silhouettes on gray and brown. The end of 4 page rule books. Storm Over Arnhem with Area Impulse. ASL because it was the most detail & complex game I ever played and I could play a new scenario every day for 4 years and never play the same one twice. Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy FFG. This has a 3d map, Cool Miniatures and is played using cards. Warhammer 40K: Forbidden Stars. Nice miniatures multiple board tiles and players take turns placing order tokens face down on the separate tiles (systems) that make up the game board other factions can place there orders on top of yours and these orders are resolved in reverse order with cards & dice, Really unique. Tide Of Iron because it was a miniatures game I played as a kid (I brought back memories. Easier than ASK more to it than Memoir 44. Star Trek: Star Fleet Captains as it is Star Trek in a box. Shadows Over Camelot great theme and it has a traitor. I believe the first to do so. NFL Strategy Unique picking plays and resolve mech. Jutland AH WW1 Naval miniatures game in a box, Paths Of Glory because Designer Ted Raicer signed my rule book.
